Burn (Duplicity Duet # 2)

By Elisabeth Grace

BR Burn

Synopsis

“No”

One word.
Two letters.

But those two letters changed everything.

It was impossible to predict the impact I would have on the life of the only woman I’d ever truly loved. No way to know that I would result in her ruin.
I’d suffer for eternity with the knowledge that it was me who brought devastation to her doorstep.

Though I deserved the anguish I felt, to see her suffer was unacceptable.

I would fix this.

Somehow I would prove to her that I wasn’t the monster she thought I was.

Even if it meant becoming a monster in order to make that happen.

Review

“More than anything, what I want is your happiness.  That’s all I’ve ever wanted, Emily.”

Sometimes writing a review really sucks, and that’s especially true in this case because all I want to do is talk about everything that happened, but I can’t because to do so would give away major spoilers.  However, I’ll do my best to keep this review spoiler-free.  If you’ve read HOOK, you’ll know that it ended with a doozy of a cliffhanger, one that left Marco and Emily shattered.  Marco is wracked with guilt for his part in destroying Emily’s life and he vows to make those responsible pay.  Emily is also hell-bent on revenge, but she goes it alone because she blames Marco for what happened.

Emily goes to a very dark place in this book and does things I wasn’t really a fan of.  Yes, she’s an escort which means she has sex with multiple men, but what she puts herself through in the name of vengeance was a little difficult to read.  Thankfully, when she learns the truth about what happened and starts to really heal, she becomes the likeable woman she was in HOOK.  Marco solidifies his good-guy status in this book, for sure.  I liked him in HOOK, even though he was obviously hiding something, and when we learn what that was, you can’t help but feel bad for him because he put his trust in people that ultimately let him and Emily down.  His desire to seek out revenge was as cold as Emily’s, but more calculating.  Is it wrong that it made him that much hotter?

What I’ve loved most about this series are the twists and turns.  I spent the entire book trying to figure out the who and the why and the what was going to happen next.  It’s rare that a book can keep me on my toes, so I’m absolutely thrilled when one does.  Like HOOK, I did find BURN a little slow at times, especially when things started looking up for Marco and Emily.  However it was those slow times that had me on the edge of my seat, because I just knew the other shoe was going to drop at some point; and just when things seem to be going well…BAM!  Another twist that I didn’t see coming.  BURN is told in dual POVs and is part of a duet, so it can’t be read as a stand-alone.  The author has alluded that there may be another book, but I don’t know whether it will be about Marco and Emily, or another character from this duet.  I’m going to assume it’ll be about another character because Marco and Emily get a very lovely HEA at the end of this book and the bad guys got everything they deserved.

Hook (Duplicity Duet # 1)

By Elisabeth Grace

BR Hook

Synopsis

Women loathed me without even knowing my name. Men coveted the very idea of me.

Escort. Call girl. Prostitute. Hooker. Wh*re.

I’d heard it all. Done it all.

Over the years I’d felt a lot of things about my occupation…but not regret–never regret. I had my reasons for doing what I did and nothing and no one had ever made me question them.

UNTIL MARCO VALENTI.

He’d changed me and I’d naively fed into the fairy tale.

But Marco wasn’t my Prince Charming. He had secrets of his own. Secrets that would eventually rip away everything I held dear.

Review

Wow!!  As bad as this pun is going to sound, HOOK had me hooked.  I don’t know exactly when it happened, all I know is that I did not want to put this book down.  I can’t say much about the story without giving away spoilers, but what I can tell you is that “Brandi” is a high-end escort and she has a very good reason for being one.  She is a woman who is strong, loving and determined.  Marco is her latest client, and he scares her because she finds herself attracted to him like no-one else before.  He appears to be every woman’s dream, but it’s obvious early on that he’s hiding something.  His promises and declarations have her believing that even someone like her could have a happily ever after, but after she gives him the final piece of herself, her reason for living is taken from her in the most horrible way, and Marco is involved.

HOOK is told only in “Brandi’s” POV, is part of a duet and comes with a cliffhanger; and what a cliffhanger it was.  The story itself is a little slow at times and not a lot really happens, but that’s what makes the ending that much more explosive.  While the cliffhanger was completely unexpected, it was believable because it fit with the story.  I’m glad I didn’t read this when it first came out, because having to wait three months for the finale would have sucked…big time.  Thankfully I only have to wait a week, as BURN comes out on July 26th.  For now, I’ll leave you with these powerful words that make up the ending.

The lies and half-truths splintered my fragile heart into jagged pieces of glass that ripped me apart from the inside out.  The eyes of the man I thought loved me bore down from above, and the realization hit that he was the one responsible.
He did this.
My heart was a kiln that hardened my despair and transformed it into a rage so monstrous it couldn’t be contained.  I’ve been forged in fire and born anew.
He would pay.
They all would.
I’d burn this whole cesspool of a city to the ground until I’d exacted revenge on all of them.
Every.  Single.  Fucking.  One.

Shameless (Playboys In Love # 1)

By Gina L. Maxwell

BR Shameless

Synopsis

People say I’m shameless. They’re right.

I like my sex dirty. It takes a hell of a lot to tilt my moral compass, and I always follow when it’s pointing at something I want. That goes double when it points straight at the one girl in all of Chicago who’s not dying for a piece of me.

She’s all I can think about, and that’s a problem, because she wants nothing to do with me. But I’ve seen her deepest secrets, her darkest fantasies, and they match mine to a fucking T.

I want her. Bad.

Now I need to show her how good it can feel…to be shameless.

Review

What can I say about SHAMELESS?  Well, it’s about a male stripper who loves pounding women into next week.  Do you really need to know anything else?  You do?  Ok, well, it’s a fun and quick read that includes a lot of hot, hard, hair-pulling sex.  There’s not much of a story, but the sex is plentiful and damn hot.

I dance and make their panties wet, then they do the same to my dick.  It’s a win-win.

I really liked Jane, who’s a simple, hard-working girl with a kinky side.  She gets the shock of her life when she realises that the plumber her best friend hired is actually a stripper and when Chance offers up a night she’ll never forget, it sounds too good for her to pass up.  She’s not clingy or emotional, and she really does try to keep her feelings out of the equation when it comes to Chance and their casual yet exclusive relationship.  When he’s not being an asshole, Chance is a very likeable guy.  For a man who claims he never wants to be in a relationship, he plays the part of doting boyfriend really well.

“I’m hungry for you, Jane.  So tell me what I have to do to get you on my menu.”

SHAMELESS is told in dual POVs and is the first book in the Playboys In Love series.  It comes with a HEA for Chance and Jane, and also sets us up for RUTHLESS, which will be about Addie (Jane’s BFF) and Roman (Chance’s BFF and Playboys 4 Hire business partner).  Please note that the sex in this book contains elements of degradation and humiliation, which I’m not into at all but Jane is, so it’s something to be mindful of before you start reading.

Sugar Daddy (Sugar Bowl # 1)

By Sawyer Bennett

BR Sugar Daddy

Synopsis

Sela Halstead lost her innocence in a way that no sixteen-year-old should ever have to endure. She’s spent years trying to forget that night even while wondering about the identities of the monsters who brutalized her—until a telltale tattoo flashes across Sela’s TV screen. The incriminating ink belongs to Jonathon Townsend, the millionaire founder of The Sugar Bowl, a website that matches rich older men with impressionable young women. Obsessed with revenge, Sela infiltrates Townsend’s world, only to come face-to-face with a tantalizing complication: Beckett North, his charismatic business partner.

The tech mastermind behind The Sugar Bowl, Beck always gets what he wants, in business and in bed. And yet, for a man who’s done every dirty thing imaginable, there’s something about the naïve, fresh-faced Sela that sparks his hottest fantasies. Because with her, it’s not just about sex. Beck opens up to her in ways he never has with other girls. So why does he get the feeling that she’s hiding something? In a world of pleasure and power, the shocking truth could turn them against each other—or bind them forever.

Note: Sugar Daddy ends on a cliffhanger. Sela and Beck’s story continues in Sugar Rush andSugar Free!

Review

HOLY FUCKING CRAP!!!  What a story.  I could not put this one down.  The chemistry between Sela and Beck is hot and the sex is even hotter.  But it’s not all just hot sex and amazing chemistry; there are some sweet and homey scenes in there too.  I knew this was going to end in a cliffhanger but it still came out of nowhere and man, was it a doozy.  My first thought when I finished was, “Beck, you have no idea what you’ve just done.”.  How will he come back from this?  What is Sela feeling right now?  What is going to happen next?  Honestly, you will be left with a slew of questions and feelings that you’ll have to sort through.  I love a book that still has me reeling several days later.

My heart absolutely broke for Sela after being shown glimpses of what happened to her on the night of her sixteenth birthday and I totally get her need for revenge.  What is really sad though is that we haven’t been told everything that happened that night; just bits and pieces of it as she had her flashbacks.  Obviously, trust is not something she gives out freely, but it’s not long before she gives her trust to Beck.  There’s something about him that not only puts her at ease, but also helps her heal some of her old wounds.  Being with him has her thinking that she can possibly have a happy and normal life, and that’s something she wants even more than revenge.

Beck is a nice guy who donates whatever time and money he can for worthy causes.  He was born into a wealthy family and has amassed his own wealth, but it hasn’t gone to his head.  He knows that the Sugar Bowl trades in sex, but he’s actually very respectful of the woman in his company; he doesn’t think of them as whores or sluts, but instead thinks of them as smart businesswomen.  He’s a good guy who never gives up on his friends, despite the fact that he should have given up on JT a long time ago. There’s a deep connection hinted at throughout the book that Beck uses to justify his reason for not turning his back on JT, but it’s not been revealed yet.

SUGAR DADDY is told in dual POVs and is part one in the trilogy about Sela and Beck.  I cannot wait for the next book, SUGAR RUSH, which comes out on August 16.

Please note: This book talks about rape which may be a trigger for some readers.

EXRATED

By Stevie J. Cole

BR ExRated

Synopsis

Tyler Westbrook, better known as Johnny Depth, is taking the adult film industry by storm. With his playboy looks, it’s no surprise a few coworkers have attempted to take things off set and into the bedroom, but Tyler refuses to blur the lines between work and play…until the new assistant to the director walks in.

Jemma Morgan was recently fired from a lead role on a kid’s TV show that was supposed to be her big break. Unable to get another acting gig, she’s accepted a job in an industry she never expected to be a part of. Although she anticipates being shocked her first few days on set, nothing could prepare her for the moment she’s asked to hold the reflector as her ex-boyfriend plows through a woman like a Kansas cornfield.

In a world of lube and fake moans, is there a place for a second chance? Exes and some
serious ohs…the term ex-rated just took on a whole new meaning.

Review

It’s not often a book really grabs you from the start, but EXRATED is most definitely one of those books.

“Okay.  Good Size.  Good girth.  You got a good looking dick, man.”
“Uh…” What the fuck do I say to that? “Thanks…”

There’s a first time for everything in life, but never did I imagine Hudson Matthews would one day ask me to beat off in his office and then pull out a measuring tape to see what kind of distance my ejaculation has.

Tyler and Jemma have known each other since they were six years old, and even at that age he knew she was special and would be an important part of his life.  But their relationship fell apart soon after Tyler left for college and Jemma moved to LA to pursue acting.  Four years later and after both their lives have changed course drastically, they meet again in the most mortifying of circumstances…on a porn set…where Tyler is the star also known as Johnny Depth.  While there’s still love between them, there’s also anger and bitterness, and they both know exactly what to say to hurt the other.  While Tyler wants to make up for the past and try again, Jemma is reluctant because she can’t get her head around the fact that her ex is now a porn star.

What’s beyond amazing is that right now I’m strutting up to a beautiful skyscraper in downtown LA and why?  Oh, to go help my porn star, ex-boyfriend make a mold of his huge dick so thousands of women can shove a silicone replica of it up their vaginas.

I loved the humour and the awkward situations in this story, and there’s plenty of both from beginning to end.  But I’ll be honest, I didn’t feel the connection between Tyler and Jemma.  We’re told they love each other, but I just didn’t feel it.  On another note, I’m one of those people that needs to know all the answers, so it bugs me that we were not told why they broke up.  We know that Tyler broke up with Jemma shortly after he left for college, and while long distance is hinted at, I’m fairly certain he never gave her a reason for the breakup.  That might not be a big deal to most people, but I thought it was worth mentioning.

EXRATED is told in dual POVs and appears to be a stand-alone.  It’s full of embarrassing situations, dildos, hilarious best friends and sex.  Lots of sex.  There’s sex between M/F, M/M, F/F and M/F/F, so there’s a bit of something for everyone.

Into The Fire (Gorgeous Entourage # 1)

By E.L. Todd

BR Into The Fire

Synopsis

Ash

Despite everything I’ve done for my parents, I’ll never be good enough for them. Instead of seeing a man to be proud of, they just see an embarrassment. I served four tours in Afghanistan but that doesn’t mean anything to them. They only see the ink, the party life, and my short stint in jail.
And nothing else.
When they were in trouble, I handed over my life savings. I didn’t think twice about it because they’re my family, my blood. They raised me to be my own man and gave me everything I needed. It didn’t matter that it was every penny I had. It didn’t matter that the money was set aside for my future. My dreams.
Because they needed me.
But now they refuse to pay me back until I become the man they think I should be.

Alessandra

I have an unusual professional.
I escort men, acting as their date to family functions or work parties. It’s my job to act deeply in love with my client. And I always nail it.
But it’s not what you think.
I’m not a prostitute.
I’m not a call girl.
I’m an actress.
Get it right.
There are strict rules when it comes to my profession. There is no touching, kissing, or anything but hand-holding. Those who choose not to comply will get a swift kick in the nuts.
But all this goes to hell when Ash walks into my life.

Review

I’ll be blunt, I didn’t like Ash very much at all.  I found him childish, rude, insulting and sometimes just downright cruel.  He claims he hates judgemental people, but judges Alessandra very harshly towards the end of the book because of her job.  I did feel bad for him because of how his parents treated him, but not enough to like him.  I did like Alessandra though.  I thought she was a kind and confident woman, but I didn’t like that she changed her life to please Ash under the guise that it was entirely her decision.

I thought INTO THE FIRE wasn’t a bad read, but it wasn’t as good as I hoped it would be.  I had moments of confusion when things were said that contradicted previous statements or actions, and I also had trouble keeping up with the timeline.  I thought the sex scenes were pretty hot, though I was very disappointed in one scene where Alessandra is cuffed to the bed, says no, but Ash goes ahead anyway, which is obviously rape, but not treated as such in the book.  INTO THE FIRE is told in dual POVs and is the start of a series.  I’m assuming it’ll be a stand-alone in the series and that the other books will focus on other couples, given that this one ended with a nice HEA for Ash and Alessandra.

December (Calendar Girl # 12)

By Audrey Carlan

BR December 2

Synopsis

Mountains, miracles, and marriage.

I had no idea what to expect when the producers of Dr. Hoffman sent me to the pristine white mountains of Aspen, Colorado. As the town of Aspen is known for being a winter haven for uber-rich Americans, I knew this desert cactus was going to be way out of her element. The ace up my sleeve however, was a high-class movie-making surfer whose family owned a cabin in those snowy hills. With him by my side, I’d make the most out of the experience.

The job was assigned under unusual circumstances. An anonymous mountain man paid a hefty fee to persuade the producers of my show to send me out for a segment on local artisans. Suited up in my parka and Ugg boots, I put the warmth of the California sun in the rearview mirror and headed to a winter wonderland.

With my newfound family in tow, I was prepared to celebrate the best month the year had to offer…until the one woman who drastically changed my life all those years ago appeared like a shadow out of pure frosted air, shattering my soul all over again.

Review

After eleven months, we have reached the end of Mia’s year-long journey in DECEMBER.  A series finale can be really hit and miss and I’m sure it’s very hard for an author to write.  Everything needs to be closed off, yet done in a way that will make their readers as happy as possible.

What are my thoughts on this finale?  I liked it, but I was left a little disappointed.  Despite the “Where are they now?” portion at the end⎯which ties a nice bow around every character from the series⎯I thought the story was unfinished in regards to Mia’s parents and the lie behind why she was sent to Aspen.  Given the revelation revealed in DECEMBER, I think the story needed to be longer and fleshed out more.  Mia’s anger is totally justifiable in my opinion because out of all the siblings, she was definitely the one hurt most by their mother’s actions.  But the most important thing is that Mia and Wes got their HEA in the form of their New Year’s wedding that went off without a hitch.  So long Mia.  It’s been fun.

November (Calendar Girl # 11)

By Audrey Carlan

BR November

Synopsis

Life, Love, Laughter.

Three things I never expected to experience in the month of giving thanks, but that is just what I received. Wes had survived Hell on Earth, and was back where he was meant to be…in my arms and my bed. For good. There would be no breaking us apart after the trauma we experienced up to this point.

My new job with Century Production sent me to the big apple to interview celebrities for a special segment on being thankful. What is a girl to do when she has an entire host of celebrity friends from her past year of travels? You better believe I called up my friends Mason Murphy, all-star pitcher for the Red Sox, and Anton Santiago, the Latin Lov-ah, to participate. They were all too happy to oblige, only my guy’s feathers were a bit ruffled by the ease with which they came running.

Add in my new family and you’ve got a fairytale Thanksgiving. Except for one tiny detail…the single seat at the table, left open by the hole in my heart that only one person could fill.

Review

Mia takes the opportunity while filming her upcoming ‘Be Thankful’ segment in New York to catch up with a couple of her close friends and ex-clients from previous months.  After taping has finished, Mia and Maddie, along with their fiancés, head to Texas to spend Thanksgiving with their brother Max and his family.  It’s Mia and Maddie’s first real Thanksgiving and it’s going well until they’re interrupted by a phone call they’ve been waiting eleven months for.

Most of NOVEMBER revolves around filming the New York segment and Mia & Wes’s sex life, er, relationship.  Life is going very well for Mia.  She loves her job, loves her expanding family and, despite having a few concerns about some of his behaviour, Wes is improving from his ordeal every day.  Sadly, there’s not much time spent on Mia’s father which I found beyond disappointing.  Personally I would have preferred less time spent on New York and sex and more time spent on Pops, especially considering everything Mia had to do during the past eleven months was because of him.  The book leads us into DECEMBER and will take us to Aspen, Colorado, where the person Mia will meet is obvious and I suppose a good way to end the series.  I’m not sure I’m going to like it though only because I don’t think there’s an explanation in the world that Mia, Maddie and Max could ever accept or forgive.  As we approach the final book in the series, I will be sad to see Mia’s journey come to an end.  I can only hope the final book does the series justice.

October (Calendar Girl # 10)

By Audrey Carlan

BR October

Synopsis

Silicone, surgery, and Hollywood starlets.

The land of the stars was beckoning and I answered its call. Now that I was free, well, as free as anyone could be, I decided to pursue something for me. To grab life by the horns and ride that sucker until I found my place within it. That decision brought me back home to Malibu, California, where I awaited the beginning of this next phase in my journey.

The job? Create a segment surrounding Living Beautiful for celebrity doctor and daytime television guru, Dr. Hoffman. The man was known for his cunning wit, good looks, and no nonsense lifestyle. In a city that was filled with plastic Barbie dolls, and nothing you touched was real, I set out to find beauty. And in doing so, I found a lot more that, for me, for the man I loved, and for the rest of the nation.

Review

Mia is no longer an escort now that her debt to Blaine has been paid.  But she still has to fulfil her obligations to her October client, who is a TV doctor that wants to use her current popularity to boost his show’s rating.  This job could be the break in her career she’s been looking for and gives her the perfect opportunity to stay at home with Wes.

While OCTOBER is about the positive changes happening in Mia’s life, it’s mostly about her and Wes dealing with what he suffered when he was held hostage the previous month.  The story also includes sex, a LOT of sex.  Be warned, there are discussions about rape and there are scenes that could be considered forceful in nature.

Gabriel’s Rule (The Escort Series # 1)

By Sloane Kennedy

BR Gabriel's Rule

Synopsis

After nearly ten years of moonlighting as a professional escort, Gabriel Maddox is good at giving women the forbidden pleasures they crave. They don’t need to know that something inside of him dies a little each time he does it or that his desperate need for cash is the only reason he can’t walk away. They just need to know that to get what they want, they have to play by his rules.

Riley Sinclair is starting over. She’s left dry, dusty Texas and her ultra conservative, fanatically religious parents and cheating, mean-spirited fiancé behind for a new life in Seattle. But one look at her stunningly gorgeous new neighbor Gabe brings back all the insecurities she’s trying to escape.

Gabe can only offer Riley pleasure but when she discovers that his perfect outside hides something terribly broken on the inside, will she risk her heart to give him what he needs?

Trigger Warning: This book contains references to abuse that may be disturbing for some readers.

Review

When it comes to sex, Gabe has two rules: he won’t kiss you and you can’t touch him.  To prevent any accidental touches, his willing clients are tied up with bindings he insists they bring themselves.  Sounds hot, right?  It is, until you realise that he’s not actually into kink, but these conditions are the outcome of a deeply troubled past⎯a past that causes him to hate his job as an escort.  But he needs the money it brings in to pay his bills and to replace whatever his drug-addicted mother steals from him.  Riley is running away from her televangelist parents and her cheating, confidence-smashing ex-fiance, and ends up living next door to Gabe.  Despite being attracted to each other, their “friendship” is strained by miscommunications and trust issues.  Both have demons they need to overcome if they’re going to have a chance at a happy and healthy relationship.

GABRIEL’S RULE is a story I would consider an insta-love and is told in dual POVs.  I noticed that sometimes the POV would change in the middle of the chapter without any notice, which was quite confusing.  The twist involving Gabe’s mother was both shocking and unexpected, and certainly explained a lot.  But the revelation is made just before the story finishes, so it ended up feeling rushed and unresolved, which was disappointing.  Perhaps we’ll hear more about it in the other two books in the series that are about Gabe’s friends.  But in regards to Gabe and Riley, it appears they escaped their pasts and got their HEA.
