September (Calendar Girl # 9)

By Audrey Carlan

BR September

Synopsis

Vegas, Viscous Exes, and Ventilators.

My life felt like a fast ride on a too short highway. Coming home should be roses and rainbows, but nothing that comes out of the desert blooms free. I was most certainly not free. I’d missed my payment to Blaine, owed the last client a hundred grand I didn’t have, and my father was on his deathbed. To make matters worse, Wes was missing in action. As in, no one had seen or heard from him in three weeks. Devastation didn’t begin to explain where my mental state was at.

Like anything life had thrown my way, I pulled on my big girl panties, not the sexy lacy ones I enjoyed teasing my guy with, but the kind that said, “This ass means business.”

I had no choice but to make the decision I made.

My ex, the man that ruined the concept of love for me, put my father in the hospital, was about to get everything he ever wanted…at least that’s what I led him to believe.

Review

Wow, what a month SEPTEMBER was for Mia.  Mia and Maddi are still coming to terms with what they discovered in AUGUST, while their father’s health takes a turn for the worse.  If that’s not enough to deal with, Mia missed her monthly payment to Blaine because she skipped out on her September client to be by her father’s bedside, and Blaine is insisting she pay back her debt in other ways.  She’d love to take Wes up on his offer to pay off her debt, but he’s been out of contact for weeks and she can’t get through to him, which only adds to her stress levels.  And when we find out why Wes has been MIA?  Holy crap, I didn’t see that coming at all.

SEPTEMBER was a very exhausting month for Mia, both emotionally and physically.  But thanks to her family and friends, she was able to keep her sanity and was finally able to remove Blaine from her life.  She’s now free to move on to the next phase of her life while continuing on her year long journey.

The Dean’s List

By Kelly Collins

BR The Dean's List

Synopsis

When does being naturally sexy become your best attribute?

Twenty-one-year-old honors student, River Roberts, knew her life had to change. With only forty dollars to her name, she was hungry, tired, and out of options. While seeking advice from her best friend Jade, she found something that could provide all she was looking for. Sexy, witty, charming and motivated, she met the requirements for The Dean’s List, a university society that offered alumni anything they desired. It was the perfect job for her.

But it came with a cost: secrets and loneliness.

After the death of his wife, enigmatic Jonathan Ferris lived in a world of acquisition and mergers, a world where he knew financial security, a world filled with desolating loneliness. That was until River Roberts. She was intelligent, beautiful, sensual, and when their lives collided, his world changed.

But then there was reality: she wasn’t truly his.

In a world of commodities and trading, River and Jonathan must fight to preserve what their hearts desire. But will that be possible? Will their collision be temporary, or will they overcome the many obstacles in their way?

Review

THE DEAN’S LIST is my first story from Kelly Collins and given how much I enjoyed it, I don’t think it will be my last.  This type of story isn’t one I come across very often and that’s probably one of the things I liked most about it, that it was a little different and moved in directions I didn’t see coming.

I liked River and her ability to make a very tough decision in order to survive while trying to graduate from college.  She was a realist, she knew what she was getting into and she knew when it was time to back away for her own safety and peace of mind.  I liked Jonathan and thought he was a good man.  I loved it when he stood up for River with her parents, which gave her the courage to stand up for herself.  However I was a little annoyed when he hid his affections for River out of fear and that’s the only time I thought of him as weak.  But he more than made up for it in the end.

THE DEAN’S LIST was well written and I liked that the storyline and characters weren’t predicable or clichéd.  But I sometimes felt it was a little slow going and some thoughts and comments were repeated several times.  I liked that despite how put together some of the clients were and how they dominated their professional fields, that they had some personal flaws too, which made for some amusing times.  At the end we were given a little teaser for TRUE NORTH which I’ve already added to my TBR list.

August (Calendar Girl # 8)

By Audrey Carlan

BR August

Synopsis

Pretending. I’ve always been good at pretending. Being someone else is easy, and that ability has served me well these last seven months. This time, I’ve been hired to be the long lost sister of oil tycoon, and down to earth cowboy, Maxwell Cunningham. Recently, Maxwell’s father passed away and in his last Will and Testament he dropped a bomb no one saw coming. One of the richest men in the world, left forty-nine percent of his company to a sister my client never knew he had. A woman named Mia Saunders.

Maxwell has a year to find this sister or he loses almost half of his empire to a greedy board of investors. Somehow, he found me and here I am. Sharing in family dinners, pretending to be someone I’m not and fooling bigwigs left and right. Only I’m finding myself falling in love with a family I can never have. One that will hurt to leave.

Stetsons, soul-searching, and sisterly duty all come into a sharp tangle with twists and turns I never saw coming.

Review

I think this is going to be my shortest review ever because I have no idea how to review AUGUST without giving away some major spoilers.  Things seem to be going well between Mia and Wes, but for some reason I have a feeling that something bad is about to befall their relationship.  I honestly don’t know why I have that feeling, I just do.  AUGUST was a rough and emotional month for Mia and her family.  She had to face some hard and shocking truths, but it wasn’t all bad and she’s now in a better place personally and financially.  But with what happened at the end and the preview we got of SEPTEMBER, I think her troubles are about to reach a whole new level.

July (Calendar Girl # 7)

By Audrey Carlan

BR July

Synopsis

Hip-hop, Miami heat, and the Latin Lov-ah.

The second half to this year-long journey has taken me to Magic City…Miami. I’ve been hired by the nation’s top hip-hop artist, Anton Santiago. His name is as sexy as he is, and it rolls off the tongue the same way his muscled form rolls to his music. He goes by the name Latin Lov-ah, and boy does he work that title from his rock-hard body, Latin hip-hop fusion dance moves, to the way he beds his women.

He’s raw, dirty, and one hundred percent player…and I want to wrap my naked body all over him and forget about everything.

Every word that comes out of his mouth is a siren’s song.

Every thrust of his hips draws me closer.

Every breath against my neck sends me into a tailspin of need and desire.

After what happened in June, I need to rip the bandage off. Move on. Anton could be just the thing I need to get my groove back.

I was hired to play the part of a seductress in Anton’s new music video, but, in the end, I’m the one being seduced.

Review

I felt that JULY was a perfect way to come off from JUNE; we needed something mostly fun and light hearted after the seriousness of the previous month.  Mia is still coming to terms with her attack and she’s having a hard time of it.  She suffers from flashbacks and panic attacks when her latest client, Anton, touches her unexpectedly, yet in a friendly way that she would have previously been fine with, returned even.  Anton and his employees are really good about her situation though, being supportive and doing their best to help her feel safe when being touched by a man.  Her fear lessens even more after she shares her story with her BFF, Ginelle, and Wes.  Yes, Wes is back.  And it’s about friggin’ time.  How will they go over the next five months?  I’m not sure but I guess we’ll find out.  I can’t wait to read AUGUST; the excerpt at the end has me really intrigued, trying to figure out who the client is and how it will affect Mia.

June (Calendar Girl # 6)

By Audrey Carlan

BR - June

Synopsis

Politics, phallic statues, and pretty women.

Literally everywhere you look, you see an old man and a gold-digging, cling-on wrapped around their wrinkly arms.

Looks as though my hot streak ended when Warren Shipley, one of the nation’s wealthiest men, hired me to play arm-candy to save face with the other one percenters he did business with. At least that’s what I thought when I arrived in Washington, DC, until I was met by old man Shipley’s debonair and insanely handsome son. The Senator from California, Aaron Shipley. Youngest senator in the history of politics, single, beyond rich, and the face of every political magazine around the US. Women everywhere wanted a taste of that power.

Me, I’d always thought politics were boring…boy was I wrong. Democracy had never been more exciting.

Review

I’m loving the Calendar Girl series and am enjoying following Mia through her 12 month journey as a high-end escort, using the money to pay off the loan shark that beat her father into a coma.  JUNE starts off with a paranormal feel to it when Mia first meets Aaron, the son of her client, Warren.  There’s a literal spark, an electrical pull they feel at the beginning which I thought could be an interesting part of the story and unique to the series, but not only did that spark go nowhere, Mia’s encounters with Aaron take a completely different and disturbing turn, one I was not expecting to see.  Reading the synopsis, you get the impression that JUNE is going to be very political, but to be honest, I don’t think there were any politics involved at all, it’s just rich men making deals.  Wait, maybe that is political.  Mia’s job is to be nothing more than arm candy to make Warren Shipley look like he belongs in the group he’s trying to work to his advantage.

Towards the end of the previous books, Mia tends to reflect back on her client and the life lesson she learned during the month.  There was a lot more reflection in this book given that we are now halfway through her 12 month journey and she’s still trying to figure out who she is and what she’ll do when the year is over.  Wes comes back into the picture right at the beginning and the situation is still a little tense between the pair.  I wish that Mia would have stood up for herself a little more against Wes.  There’s a big difference between what Mia is possibly doing in private and what Wes is doing in public, parading around with another woman with the pair appearing on the cover of magazines.  But hey, that’s just my opinion.  She also reconnects with Mason, Rachel and Tai, and Mia learnt that not only are they her friends, they are her family and they’ll be there for her whenever she needs them.  For me, reconnecting with her friends and being shown she was truly loved was the best part of this story.

No Limit (Armed & Dangerous # 1)

By L.P. Dover

BR No Limit

Synopsis

Murder. Lies. Betrayal.

I deal with those things every day. My name is Jason Avery, one of the best undercover agents in the country. I have yet to fail on a mission, which is why I’ve been sent to Vegas. Countless women have been abducted, tortured, only to show up dead in the middle of the night. It’s my job to find out which sick f*** is responsible. Unfortunately, every lead sends me to a dead end; at least, until Aylee McFadden shows up at my door.

Aylee is a stubborn, headstrong FBI agent and also one of the sexiest women I’ve ever seen with a gun. In joining me, it gives us the leverage we need to get on the inside. She fights me at every turn, but soon realizes there’s more to me than tattoos and a dirty mouth. I can’t get enough of her. Now that we’re in the game, we’re one step closer to solving the crime. However, gambling with money isn’t what the big boys want. They want the one thing I’m not willing to give.

It’s a no limit game, and if I back down I lose everything. I will lose her.

Review

I’ll be honest, I wasn’t sure what to expect with NO LIMIT.  When I signed up to review and promote this, I did so because I recognised L.P. Dover’s name, but then I realised that this seemed to be a complete 180 from her books I’ve read before in the Forever Fae and Second Chances series.  And then when I saw the cover, I got really worried.  But I shouldn’t have judged this book by it’s cover, because WOW, I loved it and didn’t want to put it down.  The story was good, the case was thrilling, the characters were likeable and the sex was hot.

There’s a killer leaving his mark on Vegas working girls, with all the victims coming from one high-end escort service.  The Madam has temporarily shut down her business but her girls are still turning up dead.  Jason is called in and goes undercover as a high roller hoping to get inside the group of wealthy suspects.  After months of no luck, the FBI send in one of their agents to help him out.  Enter Aylee, who plays the part of Jason’s paid companion.  Thanks to her assistance and the appearance of an unlikely ally, they’re able to get inside the group and start eliminating the suspects one at a time.  I had my suspicions as to who the killer could be, but I was shocked at how it played out.  Well done Ms Dover, well done.

I loved Jason and Aylee and I thought they were perfect for each other.  Jason’s used to working alone and is therefore not used to having to place his trust in a partner.  And trust is something Aylee is reluctant to give after being betrayed by her partner on a previous case that almost got her killed.  Jason isn’t a violent man, but he has no problem becoming violent when the situation calls for it.  He has a deep sense of doing the right thing, justice and protecting the innocent.  With Aylee being FBI and Jason being an undercover cop, you just know that right off the bat they’ll hate each other.  But as they work together, they start to respect each other’s skills and qualities, and they realise there’s so much more under the surface.  And when feelings of like and love become part of the equation, Jason’s not so keen to use her as bait anymore and will do anything to protect her, even if it means pissing her off.

The story seemed to move very fast at the beginning.  By the middle it seemed to have slowed down, so either the pace did in fact slow down, or I got used to the fast pace and didn’t notice it anymore.  NO LIMIT is the first book in the Armed & Dangerous series, but it mentions characters that have appeared in her Gloves Off series, at least I assume they’re from that series.  After meeting Kyle, I’m thinking I might have to add that series to my TBR list.  In fact, I just did.

May (Calendar Girl # 5)

By Audrey Carlan

BR May

Synopsis

Swimsuits, sun, surfing, and a sexy Samoan.

I headed to the island of Oahu, Hawaii to meet with cutting-edge swimsuit fashion designer, Angel D’Amico, to serve as head model for the “Beauty Comes in All Sizes” swimsuit campaign. The designer wants to show the world that beauty is not just a size two. My curves got me into this gig, and, the moment I laid eyes on my modeling “partner,” I’d never been happier with my buxom form.

Tai Niko had everything the average man lacked. Height, broad shoulders, a nipped in waist, square pecs, tree trunk thighs, and a look that rivaled “The Rock.” The part that made me drool and weakened my knees, was the thick, intricate tribal tattoos running down the entire left side of his muscled frame from shoulder to ankle. The design was unlike anything I’d ever seen, and I couldn’t wait to trace the tips of my fingers over every inch.

Review

For MAY, Mia is headed to the beautiful Hawaiian island of Oahu to model in a swimsuit campaign.  On her first day she meets her modelling partner, the sinfully sexy Samoan, Tai.  And can I just say “Wow”, because Tai was damn hot.  I loved reading about these two burning up the sheets.  Even better, there’s more to Tai than just a hot body who’s a god in the sack.  He’s dirty, for sure, but really quite sweet.  He’s heavily into family and tradition, and fears he’ll never find his soul mate in this lifetime.  But while he’s waiting, there’s no harm in having some fun with other women, right???

Tai:  “I feel as though I’m living half a life, my other half living somewhere without me.”

When I reached the end, I realised that not a lot happened in this book.  Mia seems to only spend about three days modelling, with the rest of her time touring the island with Tai or Maddy and Gin, who join her for a little while on the island.  Overall, this felt more like a holiday than a paid job.  In each book Mia learns something new about life and love.  In MAY, I think the lesson was learning to let go, that life changes and sometimes you have to just go with it.  She suffers a deep sense of loss in regards to her little sister, who now has a fiancé to look after all her wants and needs.  Mia has raised her for the past 15 years, so trying to let go of that mother role will be very difficult for her.  She had no interaction with Wes at all during this book and I worry that the relationship is now doomed.  The man she thought was waiting for her appears to have moved on less than three months after his declaration.  I don’t know how Wes will redeem himself after all of this, but it might be fun to see him try.

April (Calendar Girl # 4)

By Audrey Carlan

BR April

Synopsis

Baseball, beer, and a hot boy. Nothing can beat that. Until I meet Mason “Mace” Murphy the next “it” pitcher for the Boston Red Sox and my client. He’s immature, arrogant, sexy as sin, and the last man that’s going to get into my panties. He’s not used to hearing the word no from women, so I’m going to spell it out for him.

N = Not going to happen.
O = Out of your league buddy.

I was hired to cuddle up to the annoying, beautiful athlete, and give prospective advertisers and fans a different view of this hot-shot professional baller.

Only he’s everything I detest in a man all wrapped into a dream package. Baseball player, talented, athletic body, sculpted face, and ass you can bounce quarters off of. Unfortunately, he also believes he’s God’s gift to women, a man-whore, throws money around like it grows on trees, and conceited. The challenge for him, to break down my defenses and get in there. My challenge, avoid hopping in the sack with him at all costs.

Review

APRIL was another great read about Mia and her journey across America working as a high-end escort.  She had high hopes with this job, getting to play the pretend girlfriend for one of the pitchers of her favourite baseball team.  But those hopes were dashed the second she meets her client, Mason Murphy, and he opens his mouth.  Plainly put, he’s a pig, expecting women to fall at their feet just for a piece of him.  Sadly, he acts that way because they all do.  Well, except for Mia.

Mia:  This guy was going to be challenging.  He was smug, sexy as hell, irritating, sexy as hell, downright crass, sexy as hell, and immature.  Did I forget anything?  Oh yeah, sexy as hell.

After spending some time together, she discovers he’s a pretty fun guy and the pair become great friends.  She slowly helps him to clean up his image and together they organise a charity event to support a cause that’s close to his heart.  The whole team gets behind it and they end up auctioning several players much to the delight of all the women in attendance.  The auction was good, but I would have loved to have seen more about who the men were paired up with.  Maybe some funny stories about what the guys had to do with the ladies that purchased them? In the end, Mia’s mission to help Mason with his image was a huge success, and she walked away with another friendship or two under her belt.

Sadly, her relationship with Wes has taken a turn, and at this point I’m not sure if it’s for the worst or if they’ll find a way to get through it.  My fingers are crossed on the latter happening.

Mia:  For me, though, when he came to Chicago on that whim, something had changed, and I thought perhaps I could wait for him.

One Night Promised (One Night #1)

By Jodi Ellen Malpas

one night promised

Lulu read this in July 2014.

Outstanding story, I cannot believe she has done it again.

I love how both M and Livy both have a hidden past and the ending is outstanding, I thought her guardian angel would come back into the story and what a way to do it!!

This is so different from Jesse and Ava and I am glad as no one can replace them. Love Livy’s friends and also her Nan as puts a really different spin on this journey.

I savoured this book and will be reading it again especially before book 2 is out. Brilliant, brilliant – thanks again and love M’s full name very unique.

March (Calendar Girl # 3)

By Audrey Carlan

Promo - March 2

Synopsis

A fiancée. I’m going to Chicago to pretend to be some Italian Stallion’s future wife. Why a massive hunk, boxer, and rich restaurateur needs a fake bride is beyond me. Then again, I’m not paid to know why. I’m paid $100,000 to be his escort, or in this case, the woman he’s supposedly “going” to marry.

The moment I met Antony “Tony” Fasano, I thought I might have lost my ability to breathe. In my twenty four years of life, I’d not seen anything like him. Clad only in a small towel precariously dangling from his hips–water droplets streaming down every inch of his muscular frame–I knew right then and there, I’d finally seen male perfection in all its raw glory.

What happened next blew me away. It was now abundantly clear why he needed me…a fake fiancée.

Review

It’s MARCH and Mia is off to Chicago to meet her Italian Stallion, Anthony Fasano, a thirty year old ex-boxer-turned-businessman in charge of his family’s restaurant empire.  He needs a fake fiancé and the reason for that is made perfectly clear to Mia within minutes of her arrival.

I can’t really talk about this novella without giving away any spoilers, and to be honest, that frickin’ sucks because there’s so much I want to say.  Wes is still in the picture and they miss each other fiercely.  Despite being separated, Mia is now really enjoying her job and making the most out of the situation she’s in.  She’s getting to see new cities and make new friends.  We also meet Blaine, and I have a feeling he is going to become a very big problem for Mia.  Yes, even more so than he is now.

I really liked the way this story played out.  It was not what I was expecting to read, which was nice because I don’t often get thrown for a loop.  I liked the messages that Audrey placed throughout the story: Love yourself and don’t be ashamed of who you are; Live your life how you want to live it, not the way others want you to live it.  Mia is also maturing, learning more about love through the eyes of others and realising that she needs to reassess her own choices when it comes to her family.

Where’s the next stop for Mia?  Boston, Massachusetts.  Bring on APRIL.

Mia:  “For the next nine months, I hope you’ll remind me of what could be.”
Wes:  “I’ll never let you forget what you could have.  What’s waiting for you.”
