Only In My Dreams (Halle Pumas # 5)

By Dana Marie Bell

Synopsis

Gabriel Anderson has accepted a unique position in the shifter world. He’s about to become a Hunter, one of the few trained and sanctioned to hunt down the rare rogue shifter dangerous to humans and shifters alike. But there’s one catch: the man who recruits him tells him to hold off on marking his mate until after his training. Gabe agrees, unaware that his decision could cost him more than he ever dreamed possible.

Sarah is devastated by Gabe’s seeming desertion. His friendship with another woman threatens the bond that could have been built between them. In a bid to win her mate’s heart Sarah decides to flirt with another man, something the possessive Gabe can’t handle. When Gabe finds out that the erotic dreams of dominating his mate have a basis in reality he loses no time in attempting to claim what is his.

If he can’t, the only place he’ll ever have her is in his dreams…

Review

ONLY IN MY DREAMS is sadly the final book in the Halle Pumas series, but it does set us up for the Halle Shifters spin-off series, so yay!  There’s already another spin-off series, but unlike the Poconos Pack, the Halle Shifters series will take place in Halle as well, so we’ll see some of the characters from this series again.

Gabe is the town’s Sheriff and the pride’s Marshal’s Second, and Sarah is the pride’s Omega, which in this series means that she outranks him.  Gabe was just about to claim Sarah as his mate when he was ushered away for Hunter training by the Senate.  Unfortunately for both of them, he’s gone for six months and, in their case, absence does not make the heart grow fonder.  Thanks to miscommunications, insecurities and jealousy, their relationship had almost imploded by the time he returned home.

ONLY IN MY DREAMS is told in dual POVs and comes with a HEA for Gabe and Sarah, the final two leaders of the Halle Pride.  While each novella could technically be read as a stand-alone, it’s best to read the series in order as each one focuses on a different couple.  As with the previous novellas, there’s plenty of hot sex to enjoy, but Gabe is into domination and some light kink, so it’s by far the hottest sex in the series.

Firefly (Redemption Book 2)

By Molly McAdams

Synopsis

Firefly is the new novel from New York Times bestselling author, Molly McAdams, a dark, twisting story of redemption and true love against the odds, perfect for fans of J. B. Salsbury, Jamie McGuire, Sophie Jackson and Lisa Renee Jones.

As the Princess of the Irish-American Mob, there’s no shortage of men ready to help guard and protect me. Kieran Hayes has been saving me for as long as I can remember. It’s in his blood, and one of the many reasons I fell in love with him. Until my favourite trait became his biggest flaw, making me resent the man I love.

What I wasn’t prepared for was Dare – the man who set my world on fire with just one touch. He saw straight through to my soul and silently demanded my heart from the beginning.

And I didn’t expect Dare to be Demitri Borello – the reason for so many deaths in my family. A man who will take my life the moment he finds out who I am.

Despite it all, I’ll love him until that moment comes.

Don’t miss Blackbird, another powerful romance of love in the darkness from Molly McAdams.

Review

Firefly kept me on the edge of my seat, the anticipation and fear that Lily would be revealed, the suspense and mystery of who were the bad and goods guys and the men in her life who loved and were really there for her.

I was torn, I would put the book down and walk away only to race back and read more as I was beside myself with anxiety and fear for Lily.  I wanted her to reconcile with Kieran, to have their dreams realised and then I wanted her to run away with Dare as the next chapter I hated Kiernan.
The lonliness and desperation of Lily just broke my heart and when you get to the 75% mark of this story you literally are in for some spine tingling moments that will just shatter you.  I was blind sided by the revelations at this point and then the ending was just brilliant with secrets revealed and the story was tied up perfectly – I am left totally satisfied.
Firefly was paced to perfection, it had darkness, moments of friendship but also tremendous terror and such heartfelt declarations of family, love and finding the lightness in the dark.

Quote:  “I’d give you the world if you asked for it, but not at the expense of your life.  Don’t ask me to stop saving you, because I don’t know how.”

Marco’s Redemption

By Lynda Chance

Marco's Redemption

Synopsis

Marco Donati is rich, ruthless–and more often than not–indiscriminate. Interested only in satisfying his sexual needs casually and frequently, he has no intention of changing a thing about his life. Natalie Lambert is alone, broke, and new to the city when a chance encounter leaves her under the power and control of Marco Donati. As the story unfolds, tensions mount and trust is tested between two people who can’t manage to stay away from each other.

Review

Marco’s Redemption has all the ingredients of an easy quick romance read with an alpha man and naive and sweet young girl.  Marco was a dynamic character, headstrong and at times very overbearing but I still loved him.

This is a very fast flowing story however at times I did feel it jumped too far ahead.   The chemistry and connection between Marco and Natalie gave me some magical moments.  Marco was a dominant businessman and Natalie was a country girl at heart.   Loved the way she looked after Marco in his home as it allowed you to escape into the fairytale.

The building tension with Kennedy gave the story some darkness yet showed Marco’s strength.  There were some great emotional scenes as Marco’s need developed to find his redemption with Natalie.

Another great addition was Kennedy who provided some fantastic intense dominant scenes.  However, I did believe that Marco’s acquaintance fled too easily without any drama.

In conclusion, the ending in this standalone satisfied my desire to see Marco and Natalie with their happy ever after.

Still Air (Portland ME #4)

By Freya Barker

Synopsis

Deprival haunted her…

Regret troubled her…

Silence left her detached…

A life in the service of others is both penance and a blessing. She soothes her personal hell by pulling victims from theirs, helping them on their path to survival; never finding her own.

When a crippling blow finally evaporates her last hope, the temptation to give up is strong. Still, she can’t find it in her to turn her back on those who need her: the innocent, whose rescue is her perpetual goal.

He was blind, but now he sees how his family has sifted through his fingers. The reality hits hard when his son becomes a stranger, slipping deeper into transgression. Concern has him call on the one person he fears will see his own failures all too clearly. A woman he’s kept his distance from for his own protection.

What appeared to be an incompatible pairing, turns out the unyielding bond needed to heal them all.

Review

Still Air out of all the books in the Portland ME series has really surprised me as it was so much more than just about Pam.  This book is about how you reap what you sow and both Pam and Dino were highly deserving of how all the past characters assisted these two.  I savoured the change of pace that Freya wove into the final book of this series.

Dino is one character that has been with each of the other three women in books 1 to 3 being Syd, Viv & Ruby who all had Dino’s help and this was fantastic to see him get his second chance.

Pam’s story was sad and so many things about her past made sense in how she dealt with the three girls from the first three books.  I also loved how they stepped up and helped Pam in her time of need, friends are the family you choose.

The Portland ME series is just one of those groups of books I will read again and again and each book had an important part to share with the reader about second chances, new beginnings, family and love.

Some Kind Of Hero (Troubleshooters # 19)

By Suzanne Brockmann

Synopsis

Navy men don’t come tougher than Lieutenant Peter Greene. Every day he whips hotshot SEAL wannabes into elite fighters. So why can’t he handle one fifteen-year-old girl? His ex’s death left him a single dad overnight, and very unprepared. Though he can’t relate to an angsty teen, he can at least keep Maddie safe—until the day she disappears. Though Pete’s lacking in fatherly intuition, his instinct for detecting danger is razor sharp. Maddie’s in trouble. Now he needs the Troubleshooters team at his back, along with an unconventional ally.

Romance writer Shayla Whitman never expected to be drawn into a real-world thriller—or to meet a hero who makes her pulse pound. Action on the page is one thing. Actually living it is another story. Shay’s not as bold as her heroines, but she’s a mother. She sees the panic in her new neighbor’s usually fearless blue eyes—and knows there’s no greater terror for a parent than having a child at risk. It’s an ordeal Shay won’t let Pete face alone. She’s no highly trained operative, but she’s smart, resourceful, and knows what makes teenagers tick.

Still, working alongside Pete has its own perils—like letting the heat between them rise out of control. Intimate emotions could mean dangerous, even deadly, consequences for their mission. No matter what, they must be on top of their game, and playing for keeps . . . or else Pete’s daughter may be gone for good.

Review

SOME KIND OF HERO is the first book I’ve read from Suzanne Brockmann.  It was an amazing blend of humour, suspense and romance, and you step right into the action at the very first page.

Shayla is a divorced romance writer and a mother of two teenaged boys.  She’s been ogling the hot Navy SEAL who moved in across the street for months now, so when he flags her down asking for her help, who is she to refuse.  Shayla is a very likeable character because she’s funny, kind and smart.  The only thing about her that irked me was Harry, the imaginary voice of her favourite character in her head.  I eventually accepted the fact that it was just one of her quirks and tried to ignore he was there.

Peter is the hot Navy SEAL Shayla’s been fantasising about for months.  He’s also a newly single father to a teenaged daughter he can’t seem to connect with, no matter how hard he tries.  Regardless of how Maddie feels about him, he loves her, which is proven by how far he’s willing to go to get her back safely.  I loved the emails he sent to Maddie while she was missing; they were so sweet and really allowed her to see that her father was not the bad guy she thought he was.

The story (with exception of the epilogue) takes place in just four days, so I would definitely call this an insta-love.  The epilogue was short and sweet, and the perfect way to end their story.  While this is part of a series, and couples/characters from previous books make their appearances here, it can be read as a stand-alone.  SOME KIND OF HERO is not only told in Peter and Shayla’s POVs, but also in several other characters POVs as well.  This did make it a little confusing, but it didn’t happen too often and it was good to sneak inside the minds of the other characters for certain scenes.

Digital Velocity (McAllister Justice Series #2)

By Reily Garrett

Synopsis

The deadliest weapons are the ones we never see. Keyboard prodigy, Lexi Donovan has risen from teenage orphan of the streets to complete independence with little help along the way. When a friend is threatened, Lexi sends an anonymous message to police, leading to a firefight that leaves a cop wounded. Detective Ethan McAllister’s well-ordered life turned upside down the day an obscure text message led to a sexual predator’s identity and arrest. Since then, Callouston PD’s finest can’t trace the elusive hacker sending him tips. The latest text leads him to a brutal mutilation and a riddle indicating the identity of the next murder victim. The dark net houses a playground for the morally depleted and criminally insane. When Lexi discovers a killer’s digital betting arena, she finds herself centered in the cyber stalker’s crosshairs, a psychopath bearing equal talent. Street life strengthened her while toughening her protective shell, but nothing could shield her from the shrewd detective forging a path to her heart.

Review

Digital Velocity is a story of a socially awkward girl who can make a difference in the world. Lexi is extremely smart and talented.  But she has been given a tough road through life. Ethan has been on a different path but is extremely ambitious and wants to do good for the world.

In this book we get to see where their relationship has evolved to since they first got started in Tender Echoes. Lexi has been feeding information to Ethan about a serial killer but she hasn’t realized the can of worms she has opened.  She has worked hard to cover her tracks but when Ethan gets injured because of her she has to make sure he is okay.

Ethan is a great detective who has made it his mission to keep Lexi safe. After she reveals herself to him, he becomes aware that she will put herself in harms way if she thinks that she can find the person who is committing all of the murders. And the dominant side of his personality will not stand for it.

I really like where Reily Garrett is taking these characters.  She has written a really good murder mystery that allows Lexi and Ethan’s relationship to take off.  I love Ethan’s bothers and sister. And I also love how that allows Lexi to enter into a family.  Reily really made Lexi’s introduction into his family believable for me.  And Lexi allowed herself to have faith that Ethan would not let her down. I can’t wait to see where Reily takes this series!!!

Sins of my Father (Black Brothers #1)

By Lisa Cardiff

Synopsis

An eye for an eye…

My name is Archer Black, and I have a confession.

For as long as I can remember, my life has revolved around getting revenge against Senator Thomas Wharton.

It was supposed to be easy. Uncover his secrets. End his political career. Ruin his Presidential campaign. Use his stepdaughter, Langley Mayer, to do it. She’s also my step-sister, but she doesn’t know that. Nobody does.

But nothing is as easy as it seems. When my high-stakes plan for revenge takes a deadly turn, I’m the only person standing between Langley and the people who want her dead. Time is running out, and I need to decide what I need more: love or revenge.

Reviews

Sins of my Father is my fourth book by this author. She has again delivered a great mystery with lots of suspense and wonderful romantic passionate moments centered within a political backdrop.

First of all, Archer and Langley had great chemistry and it was interesting to see the consequences how Archer’s perception of Langley from the beginning of the book changes over time.

Sins of my Father told in dual POV which definitely assisted in my ability to understand the motives behind both Archer & Langley’s interactions with each other.

I connected immediately to Archer however with Langley I would have loved to have seen more interaction with her mother as it most likely would have assisted me to understand her opinions and actions clearly.

Sins of my Father had great moments of political surprise.

Untouched (Midwest Alphas #1)

By Tabatha Kiss

Synopsis

They told me to stay away from him.
But he couldn’t stay away from me.

CLAIRE

I’m exiled.
My parents sent me far away from home to be scared straight by ex-cop step-uncle.
That’s when I met my step-cousin, Tobias.

Stay away from him, they told me. He’s a good guy.
If that’s true, then why does he come home covered in bruises?

I followed him one night.
I’m not sure what I was expecting to find but seeing him beat another man senseless in a boxing ring surrounded by adoring fans wasn’t it.

An illegal MMA tournament called The Midwest Alphas.
Home to some of the most brutal fighters in the country and Tobias is the local favorite to win the whole thing.
But there’s something he wants more than underground fame and glory…
And he’s looking right at me.

TOBIAS

I’m screwed.
Living a double life was difficult enough already.
The last thing I needed was a curious girl like Claire following me around.

Stay away from her, they told me. She’s a troubled girl.
If that’s true, then she and I have more in common than they think.

I joined The Midwest Alphas for more than underground fame and glory.
There’s more at stake here but I can’t focus on winning with Claire’s eyes on me the whole time. She’s a distraction. One that I can’t afford to indulge in.

I want her but I shouldn’t.
I’m supposed to help protect her from men like me but I can hardly control myself around her.
She’s young. Too young.
I can’t touch her. Yet.

Untouched: The ALPHA Edition features nearly 10,000 new words. More blood, more sweat, and more forbidden love, all from Tobias’ perspective. Get into the mind of the Alpha for the first time and learn more about the dark and dangerous underground world of The Midwest Alphas! Book 1 of 3, so you can expect a mild plot cliffhanger.

Review

Untouched was a really enjoyable read and it is told from both main characters point of view which enables you to really connect to them and I also really loved Tobias’s dad Charlie.  Charlie brought Claire back from her troubled ways and enabled her to feel safe and cared for.

Whilst reading Untouched you are given great moments of MMA action with the other bad boy alpha fighters and then some suspenseful moments with heartache involving her step-brother Rick.

Both the physical and emotional scenes between Tobias and Claire are really well written, with great build up and were perfect –I loved them together.  I did also appreciate the author respecting Tobias and him waiting for Claire to recover and turn 18 – Tobias gave her respect when she had been given very little by her family.

Tobias and Charlie create an environment for Claire to recover and want to be a better person along with Amy who was humorous and enlightened you to the world of ALPHA fighting.

Personally for me there is no real cliffhanger at the end of this book 1 of the trilogy and if you are happy where this was left you could walk away.

Benn (Demons After Dark Book 2)

By Laurie Olerich

Synopsis

A former shrink in the SuperMax prison, Benn’s positive he’s lost his damn mind when he wakes up in the body of an uptight antiquities professor. One glance in the mirror and he knows he’s not in Hell anymore. After he’s brought into Expat Security, the archangel Raphael hands him a mission he can’t refuse if he wants to get home again. Live in Rome, raft into jungles, and risk life and brand new limbs? Oh, hell, yeah! To this rush-loving extreme athlete ex-demon, this sounds like his idea of Heaven! There’s only one problem. He can’t do the job without the help of a beautiful grad student who can’t stand the sight of him. He may not remember their past, but he’s ready to make their present a whole helluva lot more fun.

Grad student Lainey Hayes has done everything she can to escape her mother’s embarrassing world of psychics and palm readers. Throwing herself into her studies, she’s perfectly happy until she’s assigned to a special project with the egotistical, narrow-minded, and condescending Professor Daniels. The smug academic discounts anything and everything related to the paranormal–including her mother. The idea of spending months tramping through ruins with him sounds like her vision of Hell, but she’s shocked to discover this adrenaline junkie with a zest for life is nothing like the jackass she remembered.

Review

Hell is under attack. There is an ancient artifact that is out there that can kill Lucifer.  Vanek and his team need to find it first in order to save Hell and stop a civil war from breaking out and spilling over to the human plane.

Benn is a psychiatrist for Hell (who knew there are psychiatrists in Hell). He has be given a task from Raphael to find the artifact because his transporter is a specialist in artifacts.  He needs help because he didn’t get any memories from professor Daniels.

Lainey is a research assistant that has a history with Professor Daniels.  She doesn’t know that Daniels has turned into Benn.  She still thinks that he is the jerk she met a long time ago.  Lainey also has the ability to sense when someone is telling the truth or not and it doesn’t help that Benn has to lie to her.

Book 2 takes this series to the next level.  I love how Benn is slightly awkward and tries to fix his relationship with Lainey even though it was Daniels that wronged her. I also found that Lainey was adorable.  She is head strong and willing to do what it takes to achieve her dreams.  I also really like the interactions between all the demons.  They know what is at stake for the world but they still manage to show that they are more than coworkers that they are family.  I really love where Laurie is taking this series and can’t wait to see where it goes from here.

The Game (The Game Series # 1-7)

By LP Lovell & Stevie J. Cole

Synopsis

What would you do for one million dollars? Or rather, what wouldn’t you do? Would you play a game?

One contract. Two Guys. Three players. Four Strikes. Five rules. Six zeros. Seven days.

No safe words. No questions. Complete submission. Are you game?

Review

Judging by the synopsis, I thought THE GAME would be one hell of a kinky read; one with a little bit of a dark edge.  In the end, what I got with THE GAME was nothing like I was expecting⎯or hoping⎯for.  It was kinky, no doubt about that, but it wasn’t just a little bit dark; it was very dark and, in my opinion, sick and twisted.  I found the entire “game” to be bizarre and I just couldn’t make much sense of it.

THE GAME was originally released as a series of seven novellas, but it’s now been combined and released as a single book.  Even though it’s now a full story, it still has that novella feel to it because of its fast pace.  My Advance Reader Copy was in desperate need of a proofreader, as I lost count of all the spelling mistakes and missing words.  I can only hope that these mistakes have been fixed in the final published version.

THE GAME is told mostly in Ella’s POV, with the final chapter for each day being told in Tobias’ POV.  I will say this for THE GAME though: the M/F/M and M/M/F sex scenes between Ella, Tobias and Preston were so very, very hot.  That being said, the amount of anal sex without lube or preparation was, for lack of better words, butt-clenching and wince-inducing.  In the end, I would have just rated this story 1❤️, but I added another ❤️ because those sex scenes were fabulous and truly panty-melting.
