Mercy

By Lindsay Marie Miller

Synopsis

I fell in love with a hitman.
The one hired to kill me.
I just hope he doesn’t break my heart.

Nineteen-year-old Anna James is an Ex-President’s daughter with a bounty on her head. A sudden thirst for teenage rebellion lands her in a crowded night club, where she locks eyes with a beautiful stranger across the room.

Ten years her senior, elusive and brooding Julian rescues Anna and then whisks her away to an undisclosed location in the wilderness. But Julian is like a force of nature—cold as ice one minute, warm and tender the next. Frightened and distressed, Anna is reluctant to trust her hero.

Especially when she discovers that Julian is the man hired to kill her.

Mercy is a full-length Dark Romantic Thriller Novel—approximately 87,000 words.
This love story can be read as a Stand Alone.

Review

Mercy is a fast paced romantic read that will have you on the edge of your seat.  One moment you will be cursing Julian and the next will be wanting to be in his arms like Anna.

Firstly I do have to say the cover although good looking to me does not reflect who Anna is. To me, she is 19, protected daughter and a virgin.  Once I consumed myself within the walls of Julian and Anna’s world the cover picture faded away thankfully.

Mercy is a standalone however at the end of this I could have read so many more chapters on Anna and her journey.  Although at the start she is very vulnerable the way the author matured Anna throughout this story was beautiful.  The story takes an incredible heart wrenching turn and I was not prepared and was beside myself.  I had so many questions and hopes and be prepared for an emotional roller coaster.

I fell in love with Julian once he rescued Anna and every chapter thereafter, I knew he had an agenda and then the way this story evolved was perfection.

The sexual scenes between Julian and Anna are enjoyable and provide a roller coaster of emotions.  There are some violent scenes in this story but were relevant and kept the suspense to the story ongoing.

Storm Gathering (The Scorpius Syndrome #4)

By Rebecca Zanetti

Synopsis

Even before surviving the Scorpius bacterium, Greyson Storm was a lone wolf navigating minefields. As a kid, he learned to take a hit and find safety. As an adult, he joined the military and quickly learned how to protect and defend. When the world ended, he created a mercenary camp with military precision, no entanglements, and a promise to avenge a fallen friend. As part of that vow, he kidnapped Maureen Shadow, but now that he has let her go, her blue eyes and intriguing mind keep haunting him…

As possibly the only Biotechnology Engineer still living, Maureen Shadow might be humanity’s one hope to survive the aftermath of Scorpius, making her frighteningly valuable to both allies and enemies. Even after sexual tension explodes between her and Greyson, she’s not sure which camp he belongs to—friend or foe? Worse yet, survival may mean thwarting his prime mission, putting her in even more peril. When danger and seduction collide, there is no safety in this new world.

Review

Storm Gathering is the forth installment of the Scorpius Syndrome Series. It is taken from a different perspective this time.  While the other books in this series primarily center around Vanguard, this book is more centered around Greyson and the Mercs. Or course Vanguard plays a role because Maureen (aka Moe) is sister to Raze Shadow who is a lieutenant with Vanguard.

Greyson is an interesting man.  He is intelligent and deadly. Once he decides that something’s his, he will stop at nothing to get it.  Including the woman that he kidnapped.

Maureen equally as passionate as Greyson is torn between him and her loyalty to Vanguard.  She knows that she has a job to do in order to make sure that there is enough food to sustain the growing population of Vanguard and perhaps the Mercs.  She knows where her heart wants to be but her mind keeps her in check.  Maureen wants everyone to be safe.

The different camps have really taken on a life of their own now.  They are starting from scratch and are finding out how to survive in this new world.  I love Jax, he is still the same along with the rest of Vanguard.  I liked getting to know the Mercs and what they stand for.  It seems that they might not be so different than Vanguard.

Like the other stories in this series, there is so much happening.  From beginning to end, this story is full of action. I love the way the Rebecca Zanetti has woven the relationships with action, drama and humour.  She can really do no wrong.

Hooked On A Witch

By Zoe Forward

Synopsis

Pleiades witch Shannon Randolph has been framed for a theft she didn’t do. She has one week to return a stolen relic to the god it belongs or she will be executed. What’s worse? Evil magic-wielding wackos are coming out of the woodwork after her to get it. But the biggest danger is Merck. This sexy, dangerous witch-hunter who understands all forms of magic might be her only hope. Enlisting his help may require she be a very naughty witch.

The moment Shannon strolls back into Jason Merck’s life he’s in trouble. There’s something about the witch he can’t resist, but he must. The witch hunter cannot date the witch.

Review

Hooked on a Witch is about a Pleiades witch that has been given a death sentence.  Shannon is accused of stealing something that belongs to a powerful god. She has no idea why they think she has it but she must find it before the time runs out or all the Pleiades witches will be marked for death. Merck is a witch hunter that happens to have a thing for the this Pleiades witch.  He knows that she should let Shannon go but first he must help her find this relic and save her.

Both these characters have a lot of charm and their relationship has it ups and down like normal relationships do. It’s just that they are trying to save each from mystical creatures and gods.  Merck has an issue that he has not shared with Shannon that could change their relationship.  I like that he really cares for her and wants her to survive.

I liked this story but I found myself putting the book down.  I gave this story 3 1/2 hearts but honestly I think I will read this story again because it has all the elements that I love in a story.  It has action, humour, romance, heartbreak and a mystery.

With the high-stakes game of war looming over them, will Red be able to open her heart to love before outside forces pull her and Repo apart?

Review

Vigor is my first book by this author.  I could easily follow the characters and basic storyline.  I happily read this in a day as it was easy to follow.  However, in saying that I did feel the overall story could have had a bit more emotional depth for the main two characters as at times they left me frustrated.  Their relationship took a back seat during the story as we followed the drama around the MC.  I did sit back at one point and ask where are Repo and Ginger?  When they returned it took awhile for me to believe they would have a future.

Their stubbornness matched as a couple with Repo and Ginger.  At the beginning, their connection was hard to emotionally connect to. They were both holding so much back and it felt very hot and cold.

One section in the hospital if expanded would have been brilliant and solidified their underlying emotional attachment and opening up to each other.  It would have helped to have had a few scenes between these two main characters in those first few days in the hospital.  I really wanted Ginger to open up to Repo and to acknowledge her past trauma that is still affecting her.  I  then wanted Repo to be that older man that she ultimately needed and provide her stability and security.  The age difference for me worked well between these two and provided some great moments.

I do admit I was unhappy with the ending as it was so abrupt after such an emotional and dangerous time for both Gabby and Ginger.   I wanted to see the recognition between Ginger and Repo in a more emotional and in-depth manner than just getting on the back of the bike so to speak.

But when mother nature has other plans, they’re forced to spend more than a night of passion together. Review

Misadventures of a City Girl is about a women who escapes her life after a failed marriage and finds a new life on a mountain.

Madison really is a city girl with all the trappings of a high profile divorce.  She needs a break from all attention that she is getting from the paparazzi, so she decides to go to a retreat for some much needed quiet. She quickly discovers that this retreat isn’t exactly what she had envisioned.  Madison soon finds herself going off on her own to escape the retreat.

Luke is a man who has lived in solitude for a very long time.  He doesn’t feel like he can rejoin society after his last tour of duty.  He has been living off the grid and barely goes anywhere outside of his own comfort zone.

I really liked Madison.  She is trying to find out who she is after her marriage ended. And while she was finding out who that is, she helped a man to find his own life again.  I think Luke was ready to take baby steps to rejoin society again he just needed motivation.  Luke has a lot of issues but he loves Madison more than the issues that control him.

Madison and Luke are really good for each other and I really liked how their characters developed throughout the story.  Plus from their first meeting, their chemistry was off the charts which led to some really steamy scenes.

Blemished

By Juliet Braddock

Synopsis

A tragic accident in the middle of an immobilizing blizzard joins Gavin Fletcher and Chloe Cabot, uniting two tarnished souls on a life-changing journey that defies the odds of their haunting pasts.

Beautiful and imaginative, Chloe struggles to survive the daily grind of life in Chicago. An artist who never dared to explore her dreams, she takes pride in her independence and fends for herself at all costs.

A young advertising executive who’s rising fast within the industry, Gavin has built an ordered and precise life, but he’s much more lonesome than he’ll ever admit.

Both exist in worlds veiled in secrecy.

On the surface, Gavin’s life exudes perfection. He’s building his own thriving business, but beneath that slick exterior, he’s hiding the truth about his enigmatic lifestyle.

Chloe, on the other hand, has been dealt a rough hand in life. As details of her heart-wrenching past emerge, she fears she might lose Gavin for good.

Together, though, they discover solace in each other’s arms. While Chloe blossoms as Gavin’s submissive under his tough but tender tutelage, she wonders if he might just be the one to break the façade of fear that surrounded her heart.

Just as emotion transforms Gavin and Chloe from reluctant strangers into unlikely but enduring lovers, heartbreak strikes their relationship again, forcing an unforeseen reversal of roles.

Review

Firstly, I love the cover of Blemished and it fits with this story.

I loved the beginning when Chloe and Gavin first meet and he provides her a safe haven.  Gavin cares for Chloe but also opens her heart to passionate possibilities.  This part of the story I loved and then following their building sexual chemistry was fantastic.  I loved seeing Gavin help Chloe recover and start to build her future with her artistic aspirations.

Blemished’s flow slowed for me during the middle and I found myself pushing through. Gavin to me lost some of his edginess and it felt bogged down.  Surprised is an understatement with the turn of events for Gavin after the Island holiday.  To be truthful I actually did not like this part of the story and also I have to mention the turtles annoyed me somewhat.

Chloe, I loved from the first chapter to the last, she had such strength and her personal story was tragic but inspiring.  I really did think her past would provide a more suspenseful outcome than what it did, it kind of fizzled out for me.  I found the whole scene in Gavin’s office lacking somewhat.  Chloe to me owned this story, she made me want to turn those pages when I felt let down by Gavin.

In conclusion, loved the ending, it brought me back into the love story of Chloe and Gavin,  I felt hopefulness for this couple.

Sweet Deception

By Ellie Jean

Synopsis

I can’t let any man get too close to me…ever. But he’s the only man who has made me want to risk everything.

On my knees, looking up at Alex Raven changed my life irrevocably. Self-assured and powerful, his presence commanded attention…especially that of women. Intoxicated by what I wasn’t allowed, I entangled Alex in my web of lies and deceit…better known as my past and present. Shouldering his own secrets, he freely gave me his trust and protection. But would pulling him into my world be the future I so craved? Or mean the end for us both?

Review

Firstly, cannot believe this is a debut novel, Sweet Deception had me twisted in knots from the beginning.  Isla’s story is full of heartache but yet hope and I immediately connected to her.

Around the middle, I was beside myself with fear of the unknown and I had so many questions and ideas.

When Isla takes a trip in this story I literally had to put the book down and take some deep breaths and calm my nerves.   I had to stop for 15 minutes and put on my big girl panties and travel this road with her.

There is a cliffhanger of sorts but it actually completes this section of Alex & Isla’s romantic journey.  For me it ended perfectly and then were are given a sneak peak of Sweet Redemption any how the characters are moving forward.

Alex was a stunning alpha mob character and then throw in his hot three friends  – tingles in all the right places.  It was great to see new friendships form and alliances take place.

This story flowed perfectly, it has the right amount of highs but also some incredible lows that you experience.  At times I too like Isla was trying to control my breathing and not panic.   Her anxiety attacks and the way she has the ability to compartmentalize her life is incredIble and shows her inner strength.

The secrets and revelations are amazing and I cannot believe right until the end we are still learning about Isla and her family history.  This is riveting reading and I so wish it was a standalone as I could not put this down.

Sweet Deception has all the ingredients of a Mob romance, it is dark, deceitful but also sensual and hopeful – I want so much more of Isla and Alex.

Review

I’ve read over a dozen Cynthia Eden books over the years, but it has been a few years since I last read one of her books.  So when I saw she had a new series available through Kindle Unlimited, I thought it was a good time to re-introduce myself to her work.

FORBIDDEN BITE was a quick and enjoyable read, and I’ve already got the second book sitting on my Kindle.  I liked that the reason behind why werewolves and vampires are enemies was explained quickly yet thoroughly.  I think the only thing that disappointed me was that Isabella had a truly interesting past that wasn’t delved into at all.  Griffin and Isabella were very likeable characters and they made a powerful couple, even though their first meeting didn’t go well.

“You wanted to kill me tonight. You had a stake.”
True. “So we didn’t have the most romantic start.”

FORBIDDEN BITE is told mostly in dual POVs, but is also told in the POV of other characters.  It’s the first book in a new series, and while I assume each book can be read as a stand-alone, I think readers will get more enjoyment—and understanding of the series’ world—if they read every book in order.

Realizing that Ty is innocent, Lexie tries to stop his plan for vengeance and help him become a better man. But as Ty battles his inner demons, dirty cops and criminals plot to take him out. Can he and Lexie find a way to escape the past?

Review

Lady luck was simply a fantastic read and it is all because of Lexie and Ty as they are simply wonderful characters.

Ty has so many male friends who have his back every step of the way in his getting justice which was great to follow. There is a male camaraderie with this story about men and their deep friendships. Throughout Lady Luck, we see time and time again how men from different walks of life help Ty.

A big part of this story is also Lexie and her finding her own home and place in life. Lexie provided humor but also some incredibly emotional moments. The first was meeting Ty’s friends in his house. The second one that made my throat constrict and eyes water was on the beach with Ty. This scene also provided my favorite quote:

“Your nightmare, mama, was my dream.”

I never liked Fuller in Sweet Dreams and I was glad to see there are some good cops in Carnal. I loved Angel Pena who was a wonderful character. All the Colorado Mountain characters band together for Ty – even Nina from The Gamble Book 1 played a part – so cool!

I look forward to reading Breathe which is Detective Chase Keaton’s story.

Can’t Hardly Breathe (Original Heartbreakers #4)

By Gena Showalter

Synopsis

Bullied in high school, Dorothea Mathis’s past is full of memories she’d rather forget. But there’s one she can’t seem to shake—her long-standing crush on former army ranger Daniel Porter. Now that the sexy bad boy has started using her inn as his personal playground, she should kick him out…but his every heated glance makes her want to join him instead.

Daniel returned to Strawberry Valley, Oklahoma, to care for his ailing father and burn off a little steam with no strings attached. Though he craves curvy Dorothea night and day, he’s as marred by his past as she is by hers. The more he desires her, the more he fears losing her.

But every sizzling encounter leaves him desperate for more, and soon Daniel must make a choice: take a chance on love or walk away forever.

Review

Can’t Hardly Breathe is about a girl in a small town that grew up surrounded by bullies and in need of human kindness.  This story takes place in a small town in Oklahoma but it could be anywhere.  There is still gossip and everyone knows each other’s business just like how I imagined a small town to be.

I really loved this book.  My emotions were all over the place.  For me, Dorothea was written perfectly.  We were given a brief glimpse in to her high school years, which was plagued with bullies, that gave us the reason why she grew into the person she is today. I love the fact that she never gave up on believing in people.  She has inner strength that I’m not sure that she even knew she had.

Daniel was Dorothea’s crush in high school.  He never knew what kind of impact he made on her life until years later.  He had his own hurdles that he had to get through and I liked that because you never know how someone else handles what has gone on in their life. And everyone handles everything differently.  Daniel really cares about his dad, Virgil, and wants him to live a long life and will sacrifice his own happiness to make sure that happens.

Dorothea’s best friends Lyndie and Ryanne are amazing friends.  They aren’t perfect and they have life issues of their own but they come together to help each other.  They are a great shoulders to lean on. Dorothea’s family on the other hand is somewhat missing in action or the enemy.  Holly, Dorothea’s sister, is selfish and still has some emotional growing to do.  She has her own reasons for acting the way she does but that doesn’t excuse some of her behavior. And her mother seems to just be going through the motions of life and doesn’t seem to be there for either of her children in the beginning.

Daniel also has great best friends and business partners in Brock and Jude. They went through a lot together in the service and they are really the only ones that understand what each of them have gone through.  I also loved Daniel’s dad, Virgil.  And it is apparent that Virgil loves his son.  Virgil also has some great one liners that make you laugh out loud and also make you think.

I really couldn’t get enough of this book.  It touched my heart.  Dorothea and Daniel have great chemistry together and I loved the strength that both of them had to show.  And I also loved the fact that this book illustrates that words matter, especially in kindness. And that life does go on after high school.
