More Than A Risk

By Kennedy L. Mitchell

Synopsis

Is a life worth living if you don’t risk it all for the one you love?

Shot and left for dead, Dr. Kate Wheeler wakes in a familiar hospital, alive, and with the one person she hoped she would never see again. He is back, but why and how are questions she’s still too angry to seek answers to. After abandoning her when she needed him most, it will take a lot to win her heart again—which he is prepared to do but Kate has never been one to give in easily.

A surprise visit from a dear friend pulls the feisty doctor into a deadly game of cat and mouse with a local businessman full of dark secrets. It’s up to Kate to bring this man to justice knowing her father, the Dallas DA, won’t prosecute without evidence; evidence she is willing to do anything to obtain.
With the love of her life observing her every move Kate is forced to walk the fine line of deceit to keep him at arm’s length. When the charade takes a dangerous turn will Weston be enough to bring her back from the edge, or is it too late for them both?

Hearts and lives are at risk and Kate and Weston’s fiery relationship returns in this second book of the More Than a Threat series.

Review

More Than A Risk is book 2 of this series. I have not read More Than A Threat (Book 1).  To be honest I could easily follow this story. It does start at the cliffhanger moment from book 1 and we actually get some flashbacks.  These allowed me to easily pick up the story. The first few chapters just drew me in and kept me so entertained. I could not put this down even though I had a few questions that if I had read book one I probably would know.

You want to peel back the layers of Kate and Weston. Weston was an easy character to connect with but I admit I struggled at times with Kate.  I did not warm up to her fully until they visited Weston’s friends for the wedding. As Kate showed her emotions and opened her defences up I began to love her.  However, I became frustrated with her ability to put herself in danger to the detriment of Weston.

The sexual scenes between Weston and Kate were off the charts hot and heavy.  There are some incredible moments of intense emotion that grab your heart with both hands.

Weston’s friends and his brother I absolutely loved and they all gave more depth to the story especially towards the ending. I actually wanted to see more interaction with her father but again perhaps that happened more in More Than A Threat?

Chase had me at times scared to my core for Kate and the games she was playing.

This story gives you dark moments of suspense, mystery and trauma. It ties up nicely but does lead to another book.

The Devil Has a British Accent

By ZN Willett

Synopsis

This is no simple Hollywood story of famous boy meets ordinary girl, who then fall in love and live happily ever after.

This is about the town of dreamers and make believers; skilled at casting spells of deception and deceit. And what happens when the spell is lifted, and everything that you believe in is merely an illusion?

When the world of happily ever after is altered and obscured, and not only by one enticing man?

For Lauren Moreau, her journey is full of raw emotions that will tempt you with curiosity and intrigue, and squeeze out passion and angst until your heart bleeds.

This is Hollywood, after all…

Review

The Devil Has a British Accent is a coming of age romance with a paranormal twist. A girl who has to protect her heart and the men who want her.

Lauren has just returned from Minnesota after graduating.  She doesn’t have any real plans for the future but has decided to help a family friend with her catering business while a film crew is in town.  I liked Lauren, she has gone through a lot with her family and is figuring out what comes next and that makes her relatable.  She is also trying to figure out her love life when a sexy actor enters her life.  There is something about him that she is drawn to.

Jackson Cruz is an actor that finds himself completely infatuated with this small town girl.   He has many secrets that could change her life forever.  I didn’t like Jackson for Lauren.  He wasn’t my favorite character.  I wondered why he cut himself off emotionally to her a lot of the time and I think because of that I didn’t connect with him as much as I wanted to.

Cary is another actor/musician that is famous but has been a family friend to Lauren’s family since they were children.  He is best friends with her brother Blake.  I really liked his character. I knew he was keeping secrets from Lauren but there is something about the way he cares for her and her brother that stuck out to me.

I found The Devil Has a British Accent to be a good coming of age paranormal romance.  The beginning was a little bit on the long side but the ending was fast-paced and Lauren’s world really changed forever.  This is a to be continued story so I can’t wait until the next installment.

Review

WICKED FAVOR is the first book in the Wicked Horse Vegas series, which is a spin-off of the Wicked Horse series set in Wyoming.  I should point out that you do not need to read the previous series before delving into—and enjoying—the Vegas series.  I know this is only the first book, but I got the impression this series will stand on its own.

I liked Jerico, and I think a lot of readers will too.  He’s a take-charge and generous man, not to mention he’s really hot and great in bed…and anywhere else he wants to have sex.  That being said, some readers might have a problem with his desire to exact his revenge on Trista’s brother by shaming Trista’s sexuality.  Yes, you find out his reasons behind it and you know he won’t go through with it, but it still might be a little hard for some readers to take.  But in the end, you can’t help falling for a man who finally realizes that the love of a good woman is more important than revenge.

I really liked Trista, who is a lot like Jerico in that she’s very nice and generous, and is not afraid to go after what she wants.  Her siblings are awful people, but her mother and her niece are worth all the sacrifices she makes for them.  I also liked that she stood up for herself whenever Jerico said or did something insulting, and how she didn’t wait for him to come to her for forgiveness.  Instead, she sought him out after she had some time to calm down and was ready to hear the whole story.  There were no games with Trista.  What you saw was what you got.

The sex in WICKED FAVOR is hot, but if you’re after hard-core sex scenes, you won’t find them here; Jerico is into light kink, but not anything BDSM related.  I will say that the conflict was predictable as soon as Jerico hatched his plan, but then I don’t think it was supposed to be all that hard to figure out.  The twist with Trista’s loan shark though was good and I didn’t see it coming at all.  WICKED FAVOR is told in dual POVs and comes with a very lovely and very sweet HEA for Jerico and Trista.

Some Kind Of Hero (Troubleshooters # 19)

By Suzanne Brockmann

Synopsis

Navy men don’t come tougher than Lieutenant Peter Greene. Every day he whips hotshot SEAL wannabes into elite fighters. So why can’t he handle one fifteen-year-old girl? His ex’s death left him a single dad overnight, and very unprepared. Though he can’t relate to an angsty teen, he can at least keep Maddie safe—until the day she disappears. Though Pete’s lacking in fatherly intuition, his instinct for detecting danger is razor sharp. Maddie’s in trouble. Now he needs the Troubleshooters team at his back, along with an unconventional ally.

Romance writer Shayla Whitman never expected to be drawn into a real-world thriller—or to meet a hero who makes her pulse pound. Action on the page is one thing. Actually living it is another story. Shay’s not as bold as her heroines, but she’s a mother. She sees the panic in her new neighbor’s usually fearless blue eyes—and knows there’s no greater terror for a parent than having a child at risk. It’s an ordeal Shay won’t let Pete face alone. She’s no highly trained operative, but she’s smart, resourceful, and knows what makes teenagers tick.

Still, working alongside Pete has its own perils—like letting the heat between them rise out of control. Intimate emotions could mean dangerous, even deadly, consequences for their mission. No matter what, they must be on top of their game, and playing for keeps . . . or else Pete’s daughter may be gone for good.

Review

SOME KIND OF HERO is the first book I’ve read from Suzanne Brockmann.  It was an amazing blend of humour, suspense and romance, and you step right into the action at the very first page.

Shayla is a divorced romance writer and a mother of two teenaged boys.  She’s been ogling the hot Navy SEAL who moved in across the street for months now, so when he flags her down asking for her help, who is she to refuse.  Shayla is a very likeable character because she’s funny, kind and smart.  The only thing about her that irked me was Harry, the imaginary voice of her favourite character in her head.  I eventually accepted the fact that it was just one of her quirks and tried to ignore he was there.

Peter is the hot Navy SEAL Shayla’s been fantasising about for months.  He’s also a newly single father to a teenaged daughter he can’t seem to connect with, no matter how hard he tries.  Regardless of how Maddie feels about him, he loves her, which is proven by how far he’s willing to go to get her back safely.  I loved the emails he sent to Maddie while she was missing; they were so sweet and really allowed her to see that her father was not the bad guy she thought he was.

The story (with exception of the epilogue) takes place in just four days, so I would definitely call this an insta-love.  The epilogue was short and sweet, and the perfect way to end their story.  While this is part of a series, and couples/characters from previous books make their appearances here, it can be read as a stand-alone.  SOME KIND OF HERO is not only told in Peter and Shayla’s POVs, but also in several other characters POVs as well.  This did make it a little confusing, but it didn’t happen too often and it was good to sneak inside the minds of the other characters for certain scenes.

Benn (Demons After Dark Book 2)

By Laurie Olerich

Synopsis

A former shrink in the SuperMax prison, Benn’s positive he’s lost his damn mind when he wakes up in the body of an uptight antiquities professor. One glance in the mirror and he knows he’s not in Hell anymore. After he’s brought into Expat Security, the archangel Raphael hands him a mission he can’t refuse if he wants to get home again. Live in Rome, raft into jungles, and risk life and brand new limbs? Oh, hell, yeah! To this rush-loving extreme athlete ex-demon, this sounds like his idea of Heaven! There’s only one problem. He can’t do the job without the help of a beautiful grad student who can’t stand the sight of him. He may not remember their past, but he’s ready to make their present a whole helluva lot more fun.

Grad student Lainey Hayes has done everything she can to escape her mother’s embarrassing world of psychics and palm readers. Throwing herself into her studies, she’s perfectly happy until she’s assigned to a special project with the egotistical, narrow-minded, and condescending Professor Daniels. The smug academic discounts anything and everything related to the paranormal–including her mother. The idea of spending months tramping through ruins with him sounds like her vision of Hell, but she’s shocked to discover this adrenaline junkie with a zest for life is nothing like the jackass she remembered.

Review

Hell is under attack. There is an ancient artifact that is out there that can kill Lucifer.  Vanek and his team need to find it first in order to save Hell and stop a civil war from breaking out and spilling over to the human plane.

Benn is a psychiatrist for Hell (who knew there are psychiatrists in Hell). He has be given a task from Raphael to find the artifact because his transporter is a specialist in artifacts.  He needs help because he didn’t get any memories from professor Daniels.

Lainey is a research assistant that has a history with Professor Daniels.  She doesn’t know that Daniels has turned into Benn.  She still thinks that he is the jerk she met a long time ago.  Lainey also has the ability to sense when someone is telling the truth or not and it doesn’t help that Benn has to lie to her.

Book 2 takes this series to the next level.  I love how Benn is slightly awkward and tries to fix his relationship with Lainey even though it was Daniels that wronged her. I also found that Lainey was adorable.  She is head strong and willing to do what it takes to achieve her dreams.  I also really like the interactions between all the demons.  They know what is at stake for the world but they still manage to show that they are more than coworkers that they are family.  I really love where Laurie is taking this series and can’t wait to see where it goes from here.

Wicked Kiss (Realm Enforcers #4)

By Rebecca Zanetti

Synopsis

Working as an informant for the DEA, Victoria Monzelle is used to living on the edge. But she’s not a big fan of getting kidnapped. And definitely not by a bunch of bad boy witches with fancy-colored fire to shoot at people. So when Adam Dunne shows up and claims to be a witch enforcer, she’s not going to put her life in his hands based on his word, no matter how smooth and smart and beautifully Irish his words sound. But on the run from a tribunal of witches, she isn’t going to make it far . . .

Before she knows it, Adam’s word is all that stands between her and execution. Sophisticated, just-gotta-ruffle-him Adam has vowed to make her his one eternal mate, wild and unpredictable as she is-to save her from a sentence of certain death. But Tori isn’t interested in being anyone’s pity date. And if they think she’s unpredictable now, they should see what’s coming next . . .

Review

In Wicked Kiss we are taken on an adrenaline ride from beginning to end.  Rebecca Zanetti gave us a treat with Adam Dunne.  We were given some insight into Adam in Wicked Burn when he came to help Nikolaj Veis and Simone Brightston.  Tori was kidnapped with Bear and brought to Ireland.  She was thrown into a world that she didn’t know existed and now she is given a death sentence by the head of the Council for the things that she has seen unless she mates Adam Dunne.

I adored Adam.  He is in a tough position trying to stay an enforcer while his family is in hiding plus keeping Tori safe.  He knows that she is special but he doesn’t know in what way.  He is also working undercover trying to find out who is making Apollo.

Tori has no idea what’s going on.  She has been taken and now she has to figure out how to get out of a bad situation.  Tori is head strong and will not be forced into anything.  She also has secrets of her own.  She has a gift that no one else knows about.

I had so much fun with this story.  It has everything that I have come to love about this series in the perfect balance.  Including Humour, tons of action and a little heartache with a romance. Adam and Tori are perfect for each other but getting these two together is challenging.  I especially liked Tori.  She knew she was different and realized that made her special. There is a lot that goes on in this story and I don’t want to give any spoilers away.  I can’t wait for Bear’s story.

Lethal Lies (Blood Brothers #2)

By Rebecca Zanetti

Synopsis

Revenge. It’s the only thing that will help Anya Best sleep at night. The serial killer who murdered her sister is on the loose, and Anya will stop at nothing to put him behind bars-even use herself as bait to lure him out of hiding. But she can’t do this alone.

Now, secrets buried long ago are coming to light and the forces determined to destroy him are watching Heath’s every move, waiting to exact their own revenge. And they’ll use anything and anyone to get to Heath.

Review

Lethal Lies is book 2 in the addictive Blood Brothers Series.  In Deadly Silence we learned that more than one experiment was performed by Dr. Isobel Madison (aka Sylvia Daniel).  Three boys were placed in a boy’s home and they quickly became family for each other.  Lethal Lies is Heath’s story and the revelations that he uncovers.

I love Heath.  Rebecca Zanetti wrote him exactly the way I imagined him to be.  He has a kind of vulnerability that instantly draws you in while he is protecting everyone around him.  He is loyal to his brothers and to those he respects. When he finds out that the agent he has a contact has been kidnapped by the Copper Killer he knows that he has to help her and her sister.

Anya is a bright and she says anything that comes to her mind.  She knows the one thing that will bring the Copper Killer out into the open. In her grief she puts together a plan to get him to expose himself but that involves Heath. She is willing to sacrifice herself if it came down to it. Anya brings out the best in Heath and she needs him to help in stopping the murders.

Lethal Lies is action packed from beginning to end.  We learn so much about Dr. Madison and what she was doing and how insane she really is.  There are so many revelations in this story. There is also a twist near the end that adds to the suspense.  The brothers work so well together and are always willing to sacrifice for each other.  This series is so addictive.  I can’t wait for Denver’s book.

Keep Me Safe (Slow Burn #1)

By Maya Banks

Synopsis

A sizzling story of a woman who risks her life and her heart to find a wealthy man’s missing sister — the first novel in a sexy new romantic suspense series from #1 New York Timesbestselling author Maya Banks.

When Caleb Devereaux’s younger sister is kidnapped, this scion of a powerful and wealthy family turns to an unlikely source for help: a beautiful and sensitive woman with a gift for finding answers others cannot.

While Ramie can connect to victims and locate them by feeling their pain, her ability comes with a price. Every time she uses it, it costs her a piece of herself. Helping the infuriatingly attractive and impatient Caleb successfully find his sister nearly destroys her. Even though his sexual intensity draws her like a magnet, she needs to get as far away from him as she can.

Deeply remorseful for the pain he’s caused, Caleb is determined to make things right. But just when he thinks Ramie’s vanished forever, she reappears. She’s in trouble and she needs his help. Now, Caleb will risk everything to protect her — including his heart….

Review

Keep Me Safe was paced really well and I connected immediately to Caleb and Ramie.  I have read Maya Banks before and was interested to see her take on a paranormal series.

Ramie’s gift takes us on a sensitive journey and your heart breaks for her loneliness and the horror she sees with her gift.  I was thankful for Caleb and his strong protection of her after his initial poor treatment at the start of this story. Their love making was romantic and the caring way he treated her was beautiful.

One thing, I did not like was Caleb’s brothers or his sister at all however I adored Dean, he was amazing and I felt his connection to help Ramie more than Caleb’s brothers.

The ending was very quick and I feel as though there are some characters I needed some further closure on particularly Tori and Ramie.  I admit by the end though I had forgiven his brothers as they stepped up to the plate when all the drama started.

The last quarter of this book just explodes with endless action and you will not be able to put it down.

Am I going onto the next book in this series, yes as I am enjoying the change in story telling by Maya.

When Day Breaks (KGI #9)

By Maya Banks

Synopsis

The Kelly Group International (KGI): A super-elite, top secret, family-run business.
Qualifications: High intelligence, rock-hard body, military background.
Mission: Hostage/kidnap victim recovery. Intelligence gathering. Handling jobs the U.S. government can’t…

Eden is said to be one of the most beautiful women in the world. Her face has graced countless magazines and her body has sold millions of dollars of clothing. But her fame and beauty has earned her more than she ever imagined. Evil is stalking her, determined to extinguish the ethereal beauty forever.

Swanson or “Swanny” as his teammates call him is always up for the next mission. He came back from Afghanistan wounded and scarred. Hardly the kind of man who even belongs in the same room with Eden. And yet there’s something about the quiet beauty that stirs his blood and makes him dream of the impossible. Because Beauty loving the beast only happens in fairy tales and KGI doesn’t deal in fairy tales. Ever.

Review

Firstly I love the cover and it really matched to the story of Swanny & Eden.

When Day Breaks is probably so far my least favourite of the series. Why?, well because there was less KGI action and more sweet romance between Swanny and Eden.  I love the senior KGI brothers of Sam, Garrett and Donovan and they really were only in small portions of this so I missed them in their save the world mode.

My favourite chapters were all the action and suspense which is what KGI is all about and then throwing in the love interest to ultimately protect and rescue.  We did get to all that eventually and to me it felt like we got 75% of Swanny & Eden getting to know each other and then only 25% of the suspense and action of KGI.  So this is not as good as the rest I have read so far however we did get a little more of Hancock and I am excited to read his story which is next being Darkest Before Dawn #10.  I have always been intrigued by Hancock since  we met him in Rio’s story and he is definitely a mystery guy and I think when he falls it will be outstanding – well I hope.

I did not pick up who was the threat until it was revealed by the team so that was a great surprise.

Two characters I really enjoyed were Skylar and Edge, they provided great support to Swanny & Eden with humour but also emotional support.

When Day Breaks ended lovely and we get to see Eden and Swanny in their new life together however I was again surprised she would go back to modelling as prior to the kidnapping she was all about the assignment being her last so that did not make sense.  I really thought she wanted to leave the limelight as she was going to make enough money to retire and enjoy eating real food.

The hard truth about sunshine…

Warning: This book deals with some tough issues including suicide and sexual abuse.

Review

I don’t even know where to start with this review, mainly because I just don’t think I have the words that will do this book justice.

When I first received the ARC request for THE HARD TRUTH ABOUT SUNSHINE, I spent several days wavering between signing up for it because it’s a Sawyer Bennett book, and not signing up for it because it sounded too intense for my tastes.  I finally decided to request an ARC, but when it was time for me to read it, I hesitated again.  I still wasn’t sure if it was right for me and I’ll admit I regretted signing up for it.  But then I started reading it and I have never been happier to prove myself wrong.

I want to slap their sunny smiles off their faces, and I want them to come down to my level where they can wallow around in the sludge of desolation with me.  I want everyone to feel as bad as I do, because it’s unfair that I can’t seem to feel better on my own.

I won’t sugar coat it, Christopher starts out as an absolute arsehole.  He’s so bogged down hating his own life and being angry at the world over his disfigurement, that he doesn’t care about anyone else’s problems.  After being abandoned by his family and girlfriend while recovering from his injuries, he’s bitter and unwilling to let anyone else in.  But after just a few days into a road trip with the three members of his therapy group, he starts to open up and let them in, and he grows up a lot in a short amount of time because of it.

I choose to live.
I choose to love.
I choose to forge my path.
Life is my choice.

THE HARD TRUTH ABOUT SUNSHINE is told only in Christopher’s POV, so it’s his story you learn the most about.  But while Christopher is the focus, Jillian, Connor and Barb play big roles from beginning to end.  Their personal stories will break your heart at the unfairness of it all, and all three will grab your heart in their own ways.  This is a stand-alone and despite the devastating topics woven throughout, it does come with a HEA, one that is both sad and beautiful.  It was a perfect end to an emotional story.

THE HARD TRUTH ABOUT SUNSHINE is beyond amazing.  It is real, deeply emotional and it will break your heart before putting it back together again.  I smiled a little.  I laughed a little.  I cried a lot.  I think I will be hard pressed to find another book that will affect me as deeply as this one did for a very long time.
