My Angel (Bewitched and Bewildered # 9)

By Alanea Alder

Synopsis

Vivian Mercy has been running from the past for so long she doesn’t know any other way of life. When a panicked call comes from one of her only friends she finds herself returning to the city of her nightmares where her dedication as a doctor and resolve to help others is put to the test.

Etain Vi’Aerlin has been watching over Noctem Falls for centuries. Sent by his queen he became a silent sentinel in the shadows helping Magnus whenever he could. While the sickness around him claims more lives he discovers what it feels like to be helpless, as an ancient warrior he doesn’t have the skills to fight this unseen enemy.

At any other time finding a mate would be cause for celebration, but Etain wants Vivian as far from Noctem Falls as possible, unfortunately, as the only doctor with an intimate knowledge of diseases she has to stay in the city, and finds herself working tirelessly to discover a cure in the middle of the deadly chaos sweeping the levels.

As Vivian’s past is revealed she finds herself not only combating the terrible virus but also the rebellious faction of the Founding Families. Etain vows to stand by her, even if it means abandoning the post assigned by his queen.

It’s a race against time to unravel the lethal secrets the virus is hiding before the city itself is lost forever.

Review

MY ANGEL is the ninth book in the Bewitched and Bewildered series and was another very enjoyable read. The story continues on from MY DEFENDER and follows the mating of Etain (fae) and Vivian (vampire), and we’re still in Noctem Falls.

Quite a lot happened in this book, all of which was really exciting. I apologize if the below is spoilerish, but it was all so interesting that I can’t help but write it all down.
1 – The mysterious sickness plaguing the shifter children has now started affecting adult shifters and vampires, including Prince Magnus.
2 – The group is concerned at discovering that over 50% of the Vanguard units are unaccounted for.
3 – Two Royal families previously believed to have been extinct are reinstated in front of all the Noble and Founding family heads. Those two families align with the other two Royal families, giving Prince Magnus more support against those who seek to seize power and control of Noctem Falls.
4 – In that same scene, it was demanded that Gavriel prove he was royalty. Not only did he prove it, but he also revealed that he is over ten thousand years old and is also known as the Dark Prince from their history and legends. Without a doubt, this was my favorite scene.

In regards to the two main characters of this story, there’s not much I can say about Etain because apart from being Vivian’s mate and having a close connection to the Fae Queen, there’s really nothing else to him. Vivian stands out more because she was pivotal in quite a few scenes throughout the story.

I’m still having a lot of trouble keeping track of all the characters we’ve been introduced to so far, and the number of characters increases by at least two with every new book. It’s gotten to a point where if I’m struggling to remember who a character is, I stop trying and just continue on with the story, otherwise it does my head in. This does take away some of the enjoyment from the story, but the mystery of what is going on around them keeps me coming back for more, so I’ll just have to deal with it.

MY ANGEL is told in dual POVs, with the epilogue being told in Micah’s POV as he’ll get the next book. While each book is about a different couple, the books in this series cannot be read as a stand-alone and must be read in order.

Bewitched & Bewildered Series

My Champion (Bewitched and Bewildered # 7)

By Alanea Alder

Synopsis

Declan Lionhart has been running interference between the Founding Families and the citizens of Noctem Falls since the day he arrived in the city. His hopes of being a simple unit warrior crumbles in the face of their troubles and it looks like he will always be bound by his family’s political legacy. But with current tensions skyrocketing to unimaginable levels, Declan’s laid back persona and easy smile are needed now more than ever.

Kari Delaney has finally achieved everything she’s ever wanted. The business she created from scratch is booming and she has her dream custom built condo in the heart of the small town where she was raised. But all that changes the day she gets her evacuation notice.

Despite being a vampire, Kari hates Noctem Falls and the politics that permeates every aspect of life within the city. Under protest she and her younger brother leave for the City of the Night.

Declan is smitten with his little general and the strength she exudes. But when it’s just the two of them he begins to break down her carefully constructed walls and shows her that even though he’s easy going, he is still an Alpha, and his lion is demanding her heart.

When the entire city erupts into chaos with matings being dissolved and Founding Families making alliances, Declan realizes it will take every trick he learned at his father’s knee to maneuver through the murky political waters swirling around them. Both he and his mate race against time to keep the people of the city safe, despite homesick children, disastrous dinners, Meryn’s wacky revenge plans and an unexpected pairing.

Review

MY CHAMPION is the seventh book in the Bewitched and Bewildered series and was another enjoyable read. The story continues on from MY GUARDIAN and follows the mating of Declan (lion shifter) and Kari (vampire), and we’re still in Noctem Falls. With twenty books planned for this series, I assume that each of the four pillar cities will get five books apiece, and that only the highest ranking Unit Warriors for each city will have stories written about them.

I’ll be honest, I don’t remember much about Declan at all. Kari was a bit more memorable with her take-charge-and-get-things-done personality, but I can’t say much else about her either. Why? Because unlike the first five books in this series, the couple and their relationship hasn’t been the main focus of the story for books six and seven. Instead, the focus has shifted to Meryn and trying to figure out what’s going on in the paranormal world. While I’m very interested in the conspiracies that have been going on for centuries, I’m disappointed that it’s at the expense of the romance side of things.

On top of the lack of romance, there are a few other minor issues. I agree with what others have said about Meryn becoming more childish as the series progresses. I’m hoping we’ll see the old Meryn again in future books, especially when she seems to be connected to everything that’s going on. Quite a few conversations felt disjointed and hard to follow, with topics changing at random before turning back around to a previous topic. Finally, with so many new characters being introduced, they’re all starting to blur together. I found myself having to stop quite a few times and saying to myself “Who is this person again?”.

If you’re still reading this review, you might be wondering why I’ve given MY CHAMPION 5❤ when it sounds like I didn’t enjoy the book. Well, it’s because despite what I’ve said above, I did enjoy it. There were scenes that had me laughing out loud and the story arc has me chomping at the bit for the next book.

MY CHAMPION is told in dual POVs, with the epilogue being told in Grant’s POV as he’ll get the next book. While each book is about a different couple, the books in this series cannot be read as a stand-alone and must be read in order.

Blood Veil (Mission # 2)

By Megan Erickson

Synopsis

In the midst of supernatural chaos, worlds and hearts collide.

Celia: Having never known my parents, I’ve always felt like an orphan. All I want is a normal life. But after I’m attacked in my bedroom by one vampire—and rescued by another—it’s about time to give up on “normal” once and for all. Idris, the second in command of the Gregorie vampire clan, has come to my aid, but his motives for saving me are unclear. And what surprises me most is my attraction to his heated gaze. . . .

Idris: Terror. Curiosity. Arousal. These are the natural impulses of a human female, not the spawn of the ruthless Valarian king. Is it possible that Celia is unaware of her bloodline—and the power coursing through her veins? As the daughter of my archenemy, she was supposed to be my ransom. But how quickly the heat of desire changes everything. Now the family Celia has always craved is trying to kill her, and it’s up to me to save her again—when all I really want to do is make her mine.

Review

I enjoyed BLOOD VEIL, but not as much as I was hoping to, or as much as I enjoyed the first book in the Mission series, BLOOD GUARD.

BLOOD VEIL takes place over just a few days, so I’d definitely classify this as an insta-love. Usually this doesn’t bother me too much, but in this case, it did. I remember being very surprised when they declared their love for each other, because up until that point, I hadn’t felt any love between them. Idris was focused on getting revenge against the Valarian king, and Celia—as his captive and bait—was simply a means to an end. Was there chemistry? Yes. Love? Not so much.

There are a couple of scenes where secrets are revealed and people are killed, but there’s hardly any shock or emotion exhibited by the characters when these things happened, especially on Celia’s part. It’s hard to get emotionally invested in a story when the characters themselves show very little emotion.

Finally, I’m confused about how this story ended for Celia. As a half vampire with a blood disorder, she can never be turned, but I don’t remember reading anything about what will happen to her. Will she be immortal like a vampire, or will she grow old and die like a human? What about her nightmares that will make her crazy if she isn’t turned? Will she still have those, or will they mysteriously disappear?

BLOOD VEIL is told in dual POVs and comes with a HEA for Idris and Celia. I finished the story quickly, so it easily held my attention, but there were just too many things that kept me from loving it. Despite that, if there is to be a third book written in this series, I would read it because this world intrigues me.

Twitch

By Claire Marta

Synopsis

Still grieving from the tragic events in his homeland, Twitch is struggling to find a balance. While trying to control a new, unforseen side to his magic, the last thing he expects is to be consumed with thoughts of a pink haired girl with innocent grey eyes.

Bewitched and confused with the feelings Lexi stirs within him, Twitch is blindsided by the danger that surrounds him. What he thought he knew isn’t as solid as he believes.

With enemies drawing near, threatening both their lives, Twitch must master his new magic to survive, or be forever crippled by what has been unleashed.

Review

Twitch is one of the characters that makes The Hunter Chronicles Series so great.  The fifth book in this series is devoted to him.  In earlier books he was a supporting character and best friend to Jasmine.  I really love Twitch.  He always manages to survive and becomes stronger.

In this installment Twitch finds himself starting a relationship with Lexi.  I think Lexi is perfect for him but she has some secrets of her own.  She is such a great character.  With her connection to Asier and what she is, their relationship has so hurdles to get over. I can’t wait to see where Claire Marta takes this couple.

There was also the introduction of two new characters to this series.  Nelly and Zook were great and offered Twitch a true friendship and help when he needed it.

This book was so fast paced.  It was hard to put down.  I loved the action and the romance.  The only thing that I missed in this story was Jasmine.  Jasmine plays an important role in Twitch’s life, even if it is just as a friend.  She is mentioned but I was just expecting her to have some advise for Twitch as he started this new relationship.  I can’t wait for the next installment to this series!!!

Wolf Hunger (SWAT #7)

By Paige Tyler

Synopsis

Wolf shifter and SWAT Officer Max Lowry falls hard for she-wolf Lana Mason, but things spiral out of control when wolf hunters track her down, and Max realizes Lana has no idea who—or what—she really is.

Review

Wolf Hunger is the seventh installment in the SWAT series.  Max, like all the other SWAT members had a tough transition.  He still has a hard time controlling his shift especially if he is confronted with domestic disturbance calls. Lana is just back from college and moved back in with her parents.  Her dad is also Deputy Cheif.

I loved Max.  He had such a rough childhood that led to his transition then he works hard to fight for the kids that are suffering.  The moment he meets Lana he is blown away by her. Unfortunately she has a very protective father who also happens to out rank Max.

This is a very confusing time for Lana.  She doesn’t know how special she is yet.  But she does know that she is crazy for Max and she isn’t going to let anyone make relationship decisions for her.

I think that this is my favorite so far in this series. There is definitely a rollercoaster of emotions that happen both inside of their relationship and with the other parts of this story.  There is still “the one” theme that is happening but I love the fresh take with Lana’s situation.  Plus, we go deeper into what the Hunters are doing and who is involved. I still love all the guys and the advice they give because each of them may know that they have someone out there but winning over that person is another story.

I love this series!!!  Each member of SWAT brings something new and you want to fall in love with each of them.  I can’t wait for the next installment.

Mating Bite (Bite # 2)

By Cynthia Eden

Synopsis

Werewolf Carter Sinclair is on the hunt. He’s tracking a newly turned vamp, a beauty with bite named Lauren McIntosh. Hunting her is the easy part. After all, no one can hide from a wolf. But once Carter gets the vamp in his arms, his easy mission suddenly goes straight to hell.

One taste, one bite that should never have happened…and Carter is hooked—mind, body, soul. Nature has plans for him and Lauren. They’re to be mates, but there is a vicious vamp waiting in the dark—a killer who has already claimed Lauren as his.

Now Carter has a new mission—keep Lauren safe at all costs. Make her fall for him. And hide all of the very dark and dangerous secrets that fill his closet. He needs Lauren to trust him, he needs her to stay with him, and the last thing he wants is for Lauren to know just how deeply he’s already betrayed her. What she never knows can’t hurt her, right?

Their mating is forbidden, but Carter is about to break every werewolf and vamp rule out there in order to claim Lauren. And those fools who try to get in his way will find out just how deadly his beast can truly be…because there is no one in the world more important to a wolf…than his mate.

Review

MATING BITE was an enjoyable and quick read, but it is pretty similar to FORBIDDEN BITE, in that we have a male vampire hiring a werewolf to track down a female vampire, for reasons other than what is claimed.  In this case, Carter is hired to track down newly-turned vampire, Lauren, and return her to her maker and “mate”.

Rule Five: Mating is forever. If you don’t believe that, try taking away a wolf’s mate. See how well that shit works for you.

Because it’s a novella, it is a fairly quick read, so I can’t say much about Carter and Lauren other than I liked them.  I loved how protective Carter was of Lauren, and I really felt for her when she explained how she was turned against her will, the fear she felt as she was being murdered, and the fear of losing her humanity.  I did struggle to understand her reason behind the conflict, but it all worked out in the end.

MATING BITE is told mostly in Carter and Lauren’s POVs, but is also occasionally told in the POV of other characters.  It comes with a HEA for Carter and Lauren, and with the introduction of two new characters (Natalie and Riley), I wonder if there’ll be another book or two in the future.  I hope there will be because I want to read them.

Forsaken by Night (Moonbound Clan Vampires #3)

By Larissa Ione

Synopsis

After accidentally shifting into a wolf—and getting stuck—Tehya, herself a vampire, has spent the last twelve years as the pet of Lobo, another vampire who has the unique gift of communicating with wolves.

When Lobo found Tehya starving and nearly frozen to death, he took her in and nursed her back to health, all the while completely unaware that she was really a fellow vampire. But there was always something special about her, and he finds out exactly how special after she’s injured and returned to her true form. Desire collides with danger as he soon finds that he must protect not only Tehya but also himself..

Review

Forsaken By Night was a great continuation of the Moonbound Clan Vampires Series. It is taken from a different perspective. Lobo was cast out of the Moonbound Clan and if he ever returns he will be executed. His only companion is wolf that he named Tehya.  He has a way of communicating with her but he doesn’t realize that she is a vampire.

Tehya is stuck in wolf form since she accidentally shifted twelve years ago. She is new to being a vampire and has much to learn.   When she is shot by a poacher Lobo will do anything to save her including risking his own life by going back to the one place he’s not allowed to go.

I love the Moonbound Clan.  Hunter is leader that the clan needs. And he knows that things might not have taken place exactly how he thought they did.

This story was more novella in length but had so much in it.  I loved Lobo because he had no reason to be loyal to Moonbound but he found a way to get through the past to help Tehya. Tehya believed in Lobo and the strength of their relationship helped Hunter see things for what they really are.

I really love this series and can’t wait for it to be continued.

Blood Guard (Mission # 1)

By Megan Erickson

Synopsis

Enter a world of immortal danger and desire—and discover an incredible fate borne of blood.

Tendra: One minute, I’m a bartender in gritty Mission City; the next, I’m whisked away by a vampire named Athan who tells me that I’m the lifeblood of his clan. It sounds unbelievable, but he’s got evidence I can’t deny. Turns out, Athan belongs to an underground society of vampires who feed only on humans with their consent. Their enemies have no such qualms, and they want me dead. The only thing standing in their way is strong, sexy Athan. And the closer we get, the more tempted I am to let Athan feed. . . .

Athan: How could I have known when I snatched this snarky, beautiful human off the streets that she would change my destiny? As a loyal soldier, I must deliver Tendra to our future king—my brother. Empowered with the blood of ten generations of the Gregorie breed, she is fated to rule as our queen. But there’s something between us that’s so intoxicating, so carnal, I can’t help wanting Tendra for myself . . . even if it’s treason.

Review

BLOOD GUARD is the first book from Megan Erickson I’ve read, and I can honestly say that it will not be the last.  I don’t read too many paranormal books any more, so it’s always good when I pick one up and enjoy it.  This one includes one fierce and protective vampire, some scorching hot cave sex, a dash of conspiracy and a dose of betrayal.  What’s not to like?

In BLOOD GUARD we are introduced to three warring vampire clans, and it really is a case of the good, the bad and the ugly.  You have the Gregorie clan (good), the Valarian clan (bad) and the Quellen clan (ugly), and all three have their different beliefs on how vampires and humans should interact.  Hence why they’re at war.  As it’s the first book in a new series, I felt the story was more focused on giving us the lay of the land instead of the romance between Athan and Tendra.  Don’t get me wrong, there is chemistry and romance, but for me it wasn’t what stood out in this story.  That’s not a bad thing, just something I thought worth mentioning.

BLOOD GUARD is told in dual POVs and comes with a HEA for Athan and Tendra.  It’s the first book in the Mission series and the ending did set us up for book 2, BLOOD VEIL, which will be about Athan’s brother, Idris.  BLOOD VEIL is currently scheduled to come out in April 2018.

Forbidden Bite (Bite # 1)

By Cynthia Eden

Synopsis

“Don’t look into her eyes. If you do, she’ll take your soul.”

Werewolf Griffin Romeo has new prey—a sexy female vamp named Isabella has been hunting in Sin City, and it’s Griffin’s job to stop her. Tracking Isabella is easy work for an alpha wolf, but once he gets close to gorgeous Isabella…Griffin’s careful plans go straight to hell. Because with one bite, he’s absolutely hooked on her, lost…mated.

Vamps and werewolves are supposed to be sworn enemies. They aren’t supposed to feel a white-hot attraction that burns soul deep. Someone wants Isabella to be judged guilty by the wolves in Vegas, but Griffin won’t let that happen.

Their mating may be forbidden, but Griffin and Isabella are about to show the paranormal world just how fiercely a vamp and werewolf can fight for each other—because mates bond forever. And nothing will come between them.

Review

I’ve read over a dozen Cynthia Eden books over the years, but it has been a few years since I last read one of her books.  So when I saw she had a new series available through Kindle Unlimited, I thought it was a good time to re-introduce myself to her work.

FORBIDDEN BITE was a quick and enjoyable read, and I’ve already got the second book sitting on my Kindle.  I liked that the reason behind why werewolves and vampires are enemies was explained quickly yet thoroughly.  I think the only thing that disappointed me was that Isabella had a truly interesting past that wasn’t delved into at all.  Griffin and Isabella were very likeable characters and they made a powerful couple, even though their first meeting didn’t go well.

“You wanted to kill me tonight. You had a stake.”
True. “So we didn’t have the most romantic start.”

FORBIDDEN BITE is told mostly in dual POVs, but is also told in the POV of other characters.  It’s the first book in a new series, and while I assume each book can be read as a stand-alone, I think readers will get more enjoyment—and understanding of the series’ world—if they read every book in order.

Captivated by Crimson

By Brynn Myers

Synopsis

She is the fated one I have been waiting for…
The crimson in her veins will restore me…

* * *

My desire for her burns like no other…
I must possess her…
Dare to touch her and you will be the one to suffer…

* * *

Nola Blair is a free-spirited photographer sent to cover the party of the century in Elizabeth Bathory’s ruined castle. It was an assignment she’d declined––twice, but when she was offered a hefty sum to indulge the wealthy eccentric, she finally gave in. Little did she know that the guests at this party were centuries old and their desires reached far beyond those of a normal partygoer.

One captivating night will change her life and the two vampires vying for her will fight to the death to get what they want. One wants her to be his and the other wants her blood.

Who will decide Nola’s fate?

Review

Captivated by Crimson is about a girl being in the wrong place at the wrong time and then thrown into a world that she never knew existed.

This book for me had a solid base and a different take on vampires but it lacked in character development.  I liked Nola and Andrik for the lead characters but there where so many characters that had their own story lines that their relationship that was being built got lost.  And characters were continuing to be added late in the story and they  also had their own story lines. With the different story lines that were going on, I didn’t feel the passion between Nola and Andrik.

Erzsebet and Paul were great evil vampires bent on destroying and getting revenge. They were easy to hate.

Nola’s sister, Quinn, and best friend, Arianna made the story fun and brought lighter moments.

Overall Captivated by Crimson had action and mystery.  It was well paced until the last 10% of the book. Then it lost energy.  The major part of the story ended around 90%.
