dark-and-beautiful-nights

Pulled between unrestrainable desire for Cassius and her devotion to Adrian, leaves Kayci suffering from the worst battle she’s ever encountered…the one for her heart.

Review

Dark and Beautiful Nights is the third volume to the Covenant Series and it does not disappoint. It picks up right where book two leaves off.  Adrian is stuck and Kayci is looking for a way to free him using dark magic.  This is slowly consuming her and everyone around her is worried.  Including her other love interest, Cass.

I can’t really share to much of the story because, just like in Betty Shreffler’s preceding volumes, one detail leads to the next.  Betty has a great way of surprising you when you least expect it.

Kayci is still a strong character that has taken on a lot of responsibility.  She has the Covenant to run and has to find a way to bring Adrian back from the place that he was sent to. And as we have seen in the past the Covenant can be a dangerous group to be a part of.

Cass has a much bigger role to play in this volume and he really grew on me.  He loves Kayci but she is devoted to Adrian and feels guilty for having any feelings for anyone else.  We also got to know Alex a lot better and he was instrumental in helping Kayci stay sane.

I really love this series and hope that it continues.  Betty Shreffler has a great way of adding one last detail at the end of every story.  It leaves you wanting even more.

A Sacred Vow

By Willa Thorne

a-sacred-vow

Synopsis

I swore a solemn oath that saw to the end of the Cormacs, a family of hunters that persistently sought to rid my coven’s existence. For years we have lived in the shadows, free from hunters and the weapons of wood that could destroy us. But the familiar scent of Cormac blood is awakening my senses. We were certain that we had ended the bloodline. Now, the vow I swore plagues my mind. The guilt I harbour buries deep. The desire and lust burns. My pledge to my family is now a promise to protect the woman I love. Aurelia Galligan is a descendant of the Cormac bloodline. I should drain her. I have to destroy her. But she may just end me.

Review

A Sacred Vow reminded me of a classic love story.  Two families at war and two young people find themselves in love. Except in this love story the man is a vampire who is well over 250 years old and the girl is a part of a family she didn’t even knew existed.

Julian, a vampire, made a vow to the leader of his clan.  His vow was to kill every member of the Cormac family that existed.  While working on fulfilling this vow in 1896 he was cursed by an old woman that “the one he loved would be his greatest sacrifice.”  Many years later he would find out what that meant.

In present time, Lia was just moving back into her grandparents old house with her cousin and friend.  Little did she know that she was about to meet a very dangerous and but exciting man that would change her life forever.

When Julian first met Lia he thought he was just going to have his dinner but there was something about her that he couldn’t ignore.  Once he saw the mark of the Cormac family he was horrified because now he had to contend with his vow.

A Sacred Vow was a great take on a vampire story. I loved that fact the Julian has this war going on inside of him.  He was willing to go against his family and his best friend Nolan to save her. I really like Lia as well, she had been through a lot with her family and yet she still had a great attitude.

Willa Thorn has put a great twist on a classic love story.  I look forward to seeing where she takes this series.

Immortal Envy (Immortal Obsession Book 1)

By A.D. Justice

immortal-envy

Synopsis

Two brothers.
Best friends.
Immortals.
One woman – the subject of their mutual obsession, but for very different reasons.
The end result will change the New York City vampire clan forever.
Immortals can hold a grudge for a very long time.

Review

Immortal Envy is a story of obsession, love, and betrayal.  Ramses and Slade are vampires and bothers who have spent an eternity together watching out for one another.  Their bond seemingly unbreakable.  Ramses has a problem with his obsessive side that they deal with when he can’t control it.

Immortal Envy starts in the late 1700s and we find that Alea is being put into a difficult situation because women didn’t have any freedom to go against their families wishes.  Her father feels that he is doing the best for her but when the opportunity to go to America with her parents, she takes it.

Both brothers have built a loyal clan of vampires around them and they have both developed an obsessive need for Alea.  One bother will do anything to protect her and the other bother will do anything to possess her.

I couldn’t put this book down.  Immortal Envy had captured my attention immediately.  Unfortunately I can’t share too much about the story because it would give spoilers away.  Each part of the story leads to a new detail that shapes the world around Ramses, Slade and Alea.  I enjoyed the way A. D. Justice has described the obsessive nature of vampires.  If not keep under control it will have a decent into madness.

Cruel Temptation (The Covenant Series Volume 2)

By Betty Shreffler

cruel temptation

Synopsis

The war is over. The rogue vampires dispatched. As a full-blood vampire and sorceress, Kayci Pierce finally feels safe. Her focus now set on how to run the Covenant and best protect her species. The next-in-line, Lycan clan leader shares Kayci’s vision—but his captivating and sexy brother, Cassius McCabe is a distraction Kayci can’t afford. New threats surround Kayci as she navigates unfamiliar territory and feelings she can’t hide. Will temptations destroy her and everything she’s worked for, or will love be enough to pull her back from the edge?

Review

Cruel Temptation is the continuation of Kayci’s story. It is an emotional journey from beginning to end.  Now that she is a full vampire sorceress everything should fall into place but as she takes her place leader in the Covenant many obstacles unfold from inside and outside forces.

Cruel Temptation begins with Kayci trying to take the Covenant to the next level by inviting the werewolves and witches to join.  This is a brave move because there are many unknowns with all three groups in the same room. As everyone arrives and starts talking in walks the next in line Lycan leader and his sexy brother, Cass.  Kayci works hard to fight her attraction to Cass because she is in love with Adrian.

It’s on the trip to see leader of the Lycan clan that she is forced to explore her feelings for Cass and Adrian.  While she is in Colorado she learns that she has opposition from many sides, and she goes from a high to a low.  It is here that she starts to learn about herself as a leader and will shape her growth.

I couldn’t put this book down.  Betty Shreffler has a way of writing that is very visual for me.   I loved the introduction of the new characters even though I’m team Adrian.  Adrian is the protector that we know him to be.  Elise is the awesome best friend that helps Kayci keep her humanity.  And Rosemary adds the mother figure that Kayci needs in guiding her as a leader.

In book two, again, the action doesn’t stop when you think it does.  Book three is set up perfectly and I can’t wait to see how Kayci is going to deal with everything in her personal life and in her leadership role.

Embrace the Dawning (The Covenant Series, Volume 1)

By Betty Shreffler

embrace the dawning

Synopsis

Kayci Pierce possesses strength, endurance, and accelerated healing that set her apart from normal humans—traits she’s never understood and kept hidden since childhood. She feels disconnected from the seemingly normal world around her—until she’s attacked by a creature she didn’t know exists and then rescued by a stranger she can’t forget. Dreams of the attractive, dangerous man haunt her and lead her into a world she was born for. Adrian Spade spends most of his solitary nights hunting rogue vampires for the Covenant, until an undeniable attraction leads him to reveal his vampire identity and risk his life by saving Kayci’s. Tempted by her mysterious nature, Adrian finds himself drawn to Kayci and becomes her protector while she discovers her heritage and what it means to be a half-breed vampire sorceress. Kayci’s relationship with Adrian brings her as much passion as it does danger. Now with a vampire revolution beginning and a romantic connection to a full-blood vampire, Kayci must work with Adrian to survive surrounding threats. As Kayci tries to make sense of an unfamiliar world, she’s forced to choose between the life she’s always known and her vampire birthright.

Review

Embrace the Dawning is the story of a young women that discovers who she really is and begins her journey into a new world that she never knew existed.   This story is an emotional ride from beginning to end.

Kayci has known she was different.  She heals fast and is stronger than most humans.  It is not until she is attacked by a rogue vampire that she truly starts learning who and what she is. Kayci is extremely relatable.  From her mistrust of Adrian right after her attack to learning she is a half-breed, she wears her heart on her sleeve.

Adrian, Kayci’s love interest, has found his match.  He has known this since he found her (a couple of weeks before her attack).  His only thoughts are to protect her, especially from his own people.  He knows what his people will do when they find out about her existence.  He is completely devoted to Kayci and I adore this about him.  I really like their relationship.  He helps to guide her with her vampire side.  He seems to understand the amount of space she needs to navigate this different world she has woken up in.

Kayci has a great friend in Elise.  They grew up together and have a bond that is stronger than most families.  She seems to be an excellent  confidant.  This part of the story was written really well because their friendship wasn’t one-sided.  They both have their own lives and they both share their ups and downs with each other.  It kept the story grounded for me.

Kayci also found new allies on her journey into this new world.  She has many obstacles and people that would like to destroy her.  I found it hard to put this book down once I started it. Even in the last part of the book when you think that everything has been resolved and the story is being wrapped up Betty Shreffler throws another twist that sets up the second book perfectly.  I can’t wait to see how this story is continued.

Fire Danger (Elementals’ Challenge Book 1)

By Claire Davon

Fire Danger

Synopsis

All her life, a faint memory of her parents and fire has glowed at the back of Rachel Quinn’s mind. With her parents long dead, there is no one to clarify what it means.
When a gorgeous winged man rescues her from a pack of werewolves, something flares to life inside Rachel. Suddenly she can see the paranormal world around her, a world unseen by mortals. And far more complicated.
When Phoenix’s massive orange-and-red wings erupt from his back, he knows his Challenge-an age-old battle against his Demonos counterpart-is upon him. Heeding Rachel’s cry for help adds a layer of complexity never seen in any previous Challenge.
Rachel, they discover, isn’t entirely human. Like Phoenix, she commands fire. Fire calls to fire, and soon they are succumbing to a fierce attraction. As the Challenge bears down on them, though, Phoenix must discover what the Demonos has in store for mankind. If he doesn’t succeed, the entire world will be swallowed up in darkness-and Rachel along with it.
Warning: When the mortal and the Elemental worlds collide, the resulting smoke could cause heart palpitations, teary eyes, and a sudden need to fan yourself. Keep a cooler of cold drinks handy.

Review

Fire Danger starts with a women in trouble and somehow she is able to mentally call for help.

Quote:  “Fire calls to fire.”

Rachel is a woman that lives a somewhat lonely life that finds out that she is more than what she thinks she is.   Phoenix is an elemental that commands fire who hears a call for help from Rachel that he can’t ignore.  There are also werewolves, vampires and other paranormals that are integrated into the story.

Each Elemental has their own Challenge to face and the fate of the human race is in their hands. Wars and plagues have started because of their failures and the Demonos want another World War. But there is a wild card in Phoenix’s Challenge and that wild card is Rachel.  She really brings back his humanity, something he thought he had lost a long time ago.

I really enjoyed this book in the way the way that all the paranormals were covered.  I also really liked these characters interactions.  Phoenix felt that he should let Rachel go but he just can’t. And I really thought that the book had a good ending.

Diablo Lake: Moonstruck #1

By Lauren Dane

moonstruck

Synopsis

In Diablo Lake, Tennessee, a town populated by werewolves, witches and more, magic woven deep into the earth protects the town’s secrets from outsiders.

Katie Grady left Diablo Lake to get over a humiliating breakup. But her family needs her help, so she’s back, in a sublet right across the hall from the guy she’s lusted after for years. Jace Dooley is hotter than ever, and their friendship picks up along with massive doses of grown-up chemistry.

The very scent of Katie sharpens Jace’s canines, makes the wolf within him stir. There’s nothing more alluring to a Pack Alpha than a sexy female who is so very in charge. She won’t be coddled, but if he plays his hand just right she might be convinced to become his.

Katie presents a challenge to Jace’s wolf nature, whose chief instinct is to protect. Especially now that she’s coming into the magic that is her birthright—and suddenly Jace isn’t the only one who’s interested in Katie or the raw power she’s just learning to use.

Review

Diablo Lake is a town that is inhabited by shifters, witches and guardians. There are two packs of werewolf’s in this town that are in a power struggle and one witch that stirs up everything.  But this is a story of a girl that was humiliated into leaving thinking that she could build a life away from magic.  Little does she know that it takes moving back to help her ailing father to truly find her place in the world.

I really adored Katie.  She is a bright spirit that embraces her quirkiness. Some of the stuff that she says made me laugh out loud.  And she is completely ferocious in protecting the people she loves.  Jace, the werewolf that Katie has had a crush on since she was young, has a strength to lead and protect his pack.  He finds himself in a power struggle of his own, yet his only thought is protection.

There are many other characters that play a role in this story of shaping Katie’s evolution into her new found power.  One of my favorite characters that helps Katie on her journey is her best friend Aimee, we all need a friend like her in our lives.  This story has many strong female characters.  I love the way this series has started and look forward to the next story.

To Love A Wolf (SWAT #4)

By Paige Tyler

toloveawolf

Synopsis

He’s a werewolf
She’s his mate
Her family would kill to keep them apart.

A wolf in Landry Cooper’s position doesn’t really do the dating scene—there’s simply no time when he’s taking out bad guys practically every day of the week. But when he meets beautiful Everly Danu during a bank robbery, he’s sure she’s The One for him. The problem: she has no idea what Cooper really is…until his secret is exposed and she discovers the man she thought she knew is a monster in disguise.

Review

To Love a Wolf is a touching story of love at first sight and the wild ride that follows.  Cooper and Everly’s story starts with a bang and just when you think that they can deal with any problem that comes their way, she introduces him to her family.  Between a bank robbery, her family and an assassin, they have a classic love story. And did I mention he’s a werewolf.

Landry Cooper starts as an EOD tech that goes through a traumatic event that triggered his werewolf gene. Then he joined the SWAT team.  During a routine stop at the bank he meets “the one”, something he never believed in.  Everly, in line in front of Landry, has no idea who or what he is and all she knows is that she has a deep connection to him.

I really enjoyed this story between them.  Everly is a creative and passionate person and Landry is kind and protective.  Obstacles are being thrown at them left and right and they can only think of each other.  I can’t wait for the next installment to this series because I really like the idea of “the one.”

The Good, the Bad, and the Vampire (Dead in the City Series #4)

By Sara Humphreys

the good, the bad

Synopsis

He wants eternity?
Dakota Shelton is a vampire cowboy with a penchant for cinnamon lollipops and Johnny Cash. Though highly skilled and deadly dangerous to his enemies, he’s still a Texas good ol’ boy at heart. And he has that heart set on wooing Trixie LaRoux-the most badass punk rock chick in town-the old-fashioned way.

Over her undead body…
Trixie is tough as nails and sharp as a silver stake-the last thing she wants is a man to sit on a porch and not grow old with. So it’ll take going to hell and back fighting a new threat to vampires before she admits Dakota’s courtship makes her blood hum. Turns out chivalry’s not dead after all.

Review

Sara Humpheys has created a world that immediately pulls the reader’s heart strings.  It was an emotional journey from beginning to end.  She built characters that are so different but they are so perfect for each other.  This is a crazy coven that have bumps in the road but the pieces end up fitting together.

Trixie a city girl who is as tough as they come.  She took a hard road through life and still follows her heart in every matter even if that means she making really tough decisions.  She is feisty and uses every opportunity to sass everyone.  I found her interesting in the way that she has a sassy facade that covers her complete vulnerability.  I am really glad that I got to know her story.

Dakota is a cowboy vampire with a journey of his own to take.  He is completely loyal to being a sentry to the coven he protects. He seems to be a classic cowboy but he is also hiding a secret. He finds Trixie attractive but then he finds out that she is his bloodmate and that puts a new spin on their relationship and he has to face some facts from his history.  He is a all around good guy that wants nothing more than to fix old wrongs.

Quote:  A familiar voice pulled her from her thoughts as she strode down the stone hallways of the Presidium’s underground facility, buried deep beneath Fort Tryon Park and The Cloisters in New York City.
“Well, smack my ass and call me Sally.”
“Okay, Sally.” Trixie rolled her shoulder and fought the buzz of attraction. “But you can smack your own ass.”
