FrostBite begins with Jasmine and her coworker Twitch being kidnapped by a very dangerous man. They are taken to Paris where she meets an equally dangerous man but one that she cannot deny that she is attracted to. The chemistry between the in undeniable but her only concern is escaping with Twitch.

Twitch is the one that Marcel Coupe wants.  Marcel is willing to harm Jasmine as leverage to get Twitch to do what he wants.  Twitch is a techno mage who is able to make the weapons for Marcel Coupe. Twitch and Jasmine are more than co-workers they are best friends.  They will do what they need to do to make sure they both make it out of there alive.

While they are captured Eric, a vampire that an undercover agent,  is trying to fight his unbelievable attraction to Jasmine.  This has never happened to him before.  He has already remained unemotional during a job.  But the mere thought of harm coming to Jasmine has his fangs ready to come out biting.

FrostBite is the debut novel for Claire Marta and it takes you on a wild ride from beginning to end.  I found the book hard to put down.  I loved the side characters especially Raoul, Eric’s blood brother.   I hope that in a future novel in this series, he will find out what undeniable attraction is so he knows what Eric went through.

I look forward to seeing what is the future holds for Jasmine and Eric.

Cruel Temptation (The Covenant Series Volume 2)

By Betty Shreffler

cruel temptation

The war is over. The rogue vampires dispatched. As a full-blood vampire and sorceress, Kayci Pierce finally feels safe. Her focus now set on how to run the Covenant and best protect her species. The next-in-line, Lycan clan leader shares Kayci’s vision—but his captivating and sexy brother, Cassius McCabe is a distraction Kayci can’t afford. New threats surround Kayci as she navigates unfamiliar territory and feelings she can’t hide. Will temptations destroy her and everything she’s worked for, or will love be enough to pull her back from the edge?

Cruel Temptation is the continuation of Kayci’s story. It is an emotional journey from beginning to end.  Now that she is a full vampire sorceress everything should fall into place but as she takes her place leader in the Covenant many obstacles unfold from inside and outside forces.

Cruel Temptation begins with Kayci trying to take the Covenant to the next level by inviting the werewolves and witches to join.  This is a brave move because there are many unknowns with all three groups in the same room. As everyone arrives and starts talking in walks the next in line Lycan leader and his sexy brother, Cass.  Kayci works hard to fight her attraction to Cass because she is in love with Adrian.

It’s on the trip to see leader of the Lycan clan that she is forced to explore her feelings for Cass and Adrian.  While she is in Colorado she learns that she has opposition from many sides, and she goes from a high to a low.  It is here that she starts to learn about herself as a leader and will shape her growth.

I couldn’t put this book down.  Betty Shreffler has a way of writing that is very visual for me.   I loved the introduction of the new characters even though I’m team Adrian.  Adrian is the protector that we know him to be.  Elise is the awesome best friend that helps Kayci keep her humanity.  And Rosemary adds the mother figure that Kayci needs in guiding her as a leader.

In book two, again, the action doesn’t stop when you think it does.  Book three is set up perfectly and I can’t wait to see how Kayci is going to deal with everything in her personal life and in her leadership role.

Embrace the Dawning (The Covenant Series, Volume 1)

By Betty Shreffler

embrace the dawning

Kayci Pierce possesses strength, endurance, and accelerated healing that set her apart from normal humans—traits she’s never understood and kept hidden since childhood. She feels disconnected from the seemingly normal world around her—until she’s attacked by a creature she didn’t know exists and then rescued by a stranger she can’t forget. Dreams of the attractive, dangerous man haunt her and lead her into a world she was born for. Adrian Spade spends most of his solitary nights hunting rogue vampires for the Covenant, until an undeniable attraction leads him to reveal his vampire identity and risk his life by saving Kayci’s. Tempted by her mysterious nature, Adrian finds himself drawn to Kayci and becomes her protector while she discovers her heritage and what it means to be a half-breed vampire sorceress. Kayci’s relationship with Adrian brings her as much passion as it does danger. Now with a vampire revolution beginning and a romantic connection to a full-blood vampire, Kayci must work with Adrian to survive surrounding threats. As Kayci tries to make sense of an unfamiliar world, she’s forced to choose between the life she’s always known and her vampire birthright.

Embrace the Dawning is the story of a young women that discovers who she really is and begins her journey into a new world that she never knew existed.   This story is an emotional ride from beginning to end.

Kayci has known she was different.  She heals fast and is stronger than most humans.  It is not until she is attacked by a rogue vampire that she truly starts learning who and what she is. Kayci is extremely relatable.  From her mistrust of Adrian right after her attack to learning she is a half-breed, she wears her heart on her sleeve.

Adrian, Kayci’s love interest, has found his match.  He has known this since he found her (a couple of weeks before her attack).  His only thoughts are to protect her, especially from his own people.  He knows what his people will do when they find out about her existence.  He is completely devoted to Kayci and I adore this about him.  I really like their relationship.  He helps to guide her with her vampire side.  He seems to understand the amount of space she needs to navigate this different world she has woken up in.

Kayci has a great friend in Elise.  They grew up together and have a bond that is stronger than most families.  She seems to be an excellent  confidant.  This part of the story was written really well because their friendship wasn’t one-sided.  They both have their own lives and they both share their ups and downs with each other.  It kept the story grounded for me.

Kayci also found new allies on her journey into this new world.  She has many obstacles and people that would like to destroy her.  I found it hard to put this book down once I started it. Even in the last part of the book when you think that everything has been resolved and the story is being wrapped up Betty Shreffler throws another twist that sets up the second book perfectly.  I can’t wait to see how this story is continued.

Fire Danger (Elementals’ Challenge Book 1)

By Claire Davon

Fire Danger

All her life, a faint memory of her parents and fire has glowed at the back of Rachel Quinn’s mind. With her parents long dead, there is no one to clarify what it means.
When a gorgeous winged man rescues her from a pack of werewolves, something flares to life inside Rachel. Suddenly she can see the paranormal world around her, a world unseen by mortals. And far more complicated.
When Phoenix’s massive orange-and-red wings erupt from his back, he knows his Challenge-an age-old battle against his Demonos counterpart-is upon him. Heeding Rachel’s cry for help adds a layer of complexity never seen in any previous Challenge.
Rachel, they discover, isn’t entirely human. Like Phoenix, she commands fire. Fire calls to fire, and soon they are succumbing to a fierce attraction. As the Challenge bears down on them, though, Phoenix must discover what the Demonos has in store for mankind. If he doesn’t succeed, the entire world will be swallowed up in darkness-and Rachel along with it.
Warning: When the mortal and the Elemental worlds collide, the resulting smoke could cause heart palpitations, teary eyes, and a sudden need to fan yourself. Keep a cooler of cold drinks handy.

Fire Danger starts with a women in trouble and somehow she is able to mentally call for help.

Quote:  “Fire calls to fire.”

Rachel is a woman that lives a somewhat lonely life that finds out that she is more than what she thinks she is.   Phoenix is an elemental that commands fire who hears a call for help from Rachel that he can’t ignore.  There are also werewolves, vampires and other paranormals that are integrated into the story.

Each Elemental has their own Challenge to face and the fate of the human race is in their hands. Wars and plagues have started because of their failures and the Demonos want another World War. But there is a wild card in Phoenix’s Challenge and that wild card is Rachel.  She really brings back his humanity, something he thought he had lost a long time ago.

I really enjoyed this book in the way the way that all the paranormals were covered.  I also really liked these characters interactions.  Phoenix felt that he should let Rachel go but he just can’t. And I really thought that the book had a good ending.

Diablo Lake: Moonstruck #1

By Lauren Dane

In Diablo Lake, Tennessee, a town populated by werewolves, witches and more, magic woven deep into the earth protects the town’s secrets from outsiders.

Katie Grady left Diablo Lake to get over a humiliating breakup. But her family needs her help, so she’s back, in a sublet right across the hall from the guy she’s lusted after for years. Jace Dooley is hotter than ever, and their friendship picks up along with massive doses of grown-up chemistry.

The very scent of Katie sharpens Jace’s canines, makes the wolf within him stir. There’s nothing more alluring to a Pack Alpha than a sexy female who is so very in charge. She won’t be coddled, but if he plays his hand just right she might be convinced to become his.

Katie presents a challenge to Jace’s wolf nature, whose chief instinct is to protect. Especially now that she’s coming into the magic that is her birthright—and suddenly Jace isn’t the only one who’s interested in Katie or the raw power she’s just learning to use.

Diablo Lake is a town that is inhabited by shifters, witches and guardians. There are two packs of werewolf’s in this town that are in a power struggle and one witch that stirs up everything.  But this is a story of a girl that was humiliated into leaving thinking that she could build a life away from magic.  Little does she know that it takes moving back to help her ailing father to truly find her place in the world.

I really adored Katie.  She is a bright spirit that embraces her quirkiness. Some of the stuff that she says made me laugh out loud.  And she is completely ferocious in protecting the people she loves.  Jace, the werewolf that Katie has had a crush on since she was young, has a strength to lead and protect his pack.  He finds himself in a power struggle of his own, yet his only thought is protection.

There are many other characters that play a role in this story of shaping Katie’s evolution into her new found power.  One of my favorite characters that helps Katie on her journey is her best friend Aimee, we all need a friend like her in our lives.  This story has many strong female characters.  I love the way this series has started and look forward to the next story.

To Love A Wolf (SWAT #4)

By Paige Tyler

He’s a werewolf
She’s his mate
Her family would kill to keep them apart.

A wolf in Landry Cooper’s position doesn’t really do the dating scene—there’s simply no time when he’s taking out bad guys practically every day of the week. But when he meets beautiful Everly Danu during a bank robbery, he’s sure she’s The One for him. The problem: she has no idea what Cooper really is…until his secret is exposed and she discovers the man she thought she knew is a monster in disguise.

To Love a Wolf is a touching story of love at first sight and the wild ride that follows.  Cooper and Everly’s story starts with a bang and just when you think that they can deal with any problem that comes their way, she introduces him to her family.  Between a bank robbery, her family and an assassin, they have a classic love story. And did I mention he’s a werewolf.

Landry Cooper starts as an EOD tech that goes through a traumatic event that triggered his werewolf gene. Then he joined the SWAT team.  During a routine stop at the bank he meets “the one”, something he never believed in.  Everly, in line in front of Landry, has no idea who or what he is and all she knows is that she has a deep connection to him.

I really enjoyed this story between them.  Everly is a creative and passionate person and Landry is kind and protective.  Obstacles are being thrown at them left and right and they can only think of each other.  I can’t wait for the next installment to this series because I really like the idea of “the one.”

The Good, the Bad, and the Vampire (Dead in the City Series #4)

By Sara Humphreys

the good, the bad

He wants eternity?
Dakota Shelton is a vampire cowboy with a penchant for cinnamon lollipops and Johnny Cash. Though highly skilled and deadly dangerous to his enemies, he’s still a Texas good ol’ boy at heart. And he has that heart set on wooing Trixie LaRoux-the most badass punk rock chick in town-the old-fashioned way.

Over her undead body…
Trixie is tough as nails and sharp as a silver stake-the last thing she wants is a man to sit on a porch and not grow old with. So it’ll take going to hell and back fighting a new threat to vampires before she admits Dakota’s courtship makes her blood hum. Turns out chivalry’s not dead after all.

Sara Humpheys has created a world that immediately pulls the reader’s heart strings.  It was an emotional journey from beginning to end.  She built characters that are so different but they are so perfect for each other.  This is a crazy coven that have bumps in the road but the pieces end up fitting together.

Trixie a city girl who is as tough as they come.  She took a hard road through life and still follows her heart in every matter even if that means she making really tough decisions.  She is feisty and uses every opportunity to sass everyone.  I found her interesting in the way that she has a sassy facade that covers her complete vulnerability.  I am really glad that I got to know her story.

Dakota is a cowboy vampire with a journey of his own to take.  He is completely loyal to being a sentry to the coven he protects. He seems to be a classic cowboy but he is also hiding a secret. He finds Trixie attractive but then he finds out that she is his bloodmate and that puts a new spin on their relationship and he has to face some facts from his history.  He is a all around good guy that wants nothing more than to fix old wrongs.

Quote:  A familiar voice pulled her from her thoughts as she strode down the stone hallways of the Presidium’s underground facility, buried deep beneath Fort Tryon Park and The Cloisters in New York City.
“Well, smack my ass and call me Sally.”
“Okay, Sally.” Trixie rolled her shoulder and fought the buzz of attraction. “But you can smack your own ass.”

Bound by Night (Moonbound Clan Vampires #1)

By Larissa Ione

bound by night

Nicole Martin was only eight years old when the vampire slaves rose up in rebellion and killed her family. Now she devotes her life to finding a vaccine against vampirism, hoping to wipe out her memories-along with every bloodsucker on the planet. But there’s one thing she cannot destroy: her searing, undeniable attraction for the one man she should hate and fear the most.A member of the renegade vampire MoonBound Clan, Riker is haunted by demons of his own. When he recognizes Nicole and remembers how her family enslaved his loved ones, his heart burns for vengeance. But when he kidnaps Nicole and holds her in a secret lair, his mortal enemy becomes his sole obsession, his greatest temptation, and, perhaps, his only salvation-a hot-blooded lover who could heal him with her touch . . . or bury him forever.

This was a great way to start a series.  As humans try to control and enslave the vampires, the vampires rebelled and there were many victims on both sides. As a child, Nicole watched as vampires she thought were friends murder her family. Years later she is kidnapped by vampires to be used as leverage.  It is only then that she begins to see the truth that her family has hidden all those years ago and continues to hide.  Riker, a vampire that holds no pity for humans, can’t stand the thought of anything happening to Nicole.  Both need and can’t stand each other.

I really like the banter between Nicole and the rest of the clan.  She was not going to give them what they wanted even though she knew she would die.  Nicole had a hate/hate relationship with Riker because she believes what her eight year old eyes told her.  There were times I wanted to kill Riker, though I knew he had his reasons for treating Nicole the way he did but the way their relationship developed was a true miracle.  Sometimes the past needs to stay in the past if they will let it go.

Take (Scars of the Wraiths)

By Nashoda Rose

A sexy new paranormal romance from the New York Times and USA Today Best Selling Author Nashoda Rose.

Feelings are a luxury I can’t afford. Hidden behind a shield of quiet placidity, I keep my secret safe from those who’d use it against me. Until him—the tatted up, self-centered Scar assassin hired to protect me.
He takes pleasure in tormenting me, chipping away at my defenses as if I’m a toy to be played with. I hate that he continuously reminds me that I’m nothing more than a job. I hate that my body responds to his touch. I hate him.

I’m not a good guy and I don’t pretend to be. Condemn me if you want, I don’t give a crap. You’re nothing to me. No one is … except her—Max. She’s my target. And I was hired to do a hell of a lot more than protect her … I was hired to kill her. It should’ve been simple, but it was complicated as hell.

*Full-length stand alone novel. Come meet the Scars.
Scars: Immortal warriors with capabilities derived from the senses: Trackers, Sounders, Healers, Tasters, Visionaries, and the rare Reflectors. They each have what is known as an Ink, a tattoo that can be called life.

My Review

This is Five Hearts of Fantastic I tell you, I am not a big reader of paranormal that include Witches, Ghosts, Immortal Warriors and Vampires. This book has those and it even had a glossary at the start to explain where they all fit.  For a novice like myself I did find the glossary helpful in the first few chapters and then the book just took on a journey of its own that I became consumed with and completely entangled in this amazing world.

I admit at the 70% mark at a particularly critical part of this story for Jasper and Max I put my ipad down and walked away as I was so scared as to how this book would end.  It took me two hours to walk back, sit down and finish the journey with them, this point in time also made me fall in love with Xamien, Holden and Guise even more.

Nashoda Rose, please I want a book on Xamien, Holden and Guise – those guys are amazing and just leapt off the pages at me and held their own against the chemistry of Max and Jasper. The connection between Max and Jasper was just off the charts hot and heavy I mean I could not put this down.

I adored the relationship of Xamien and Max and the all encompassing protection he offered this beautiful girl. To even comprehend the years of turmoil she endured at Drakes hands, we received snippets of but I did not need to known any more as her pure fear of Drake the Vampire you could feel in the words Nashoda wrote. This is one of my highlight books so far this year as not my normal genre but I would pick this up again and re read it, over and over.

Vampire Next Door

By Angela Snyder

BR Vampire Next Door

Meet Jane Doe.  Badly beaten and left for dead in the woods, she wakes up from a three week coma with absolutely no memory of who she is, where she came from or what happened to her.  The only memory she has is the voice of her surgeon, Dr Jack Walker, talking to her in her dreams.

Jack felt an instant connection with his patient and would spend every night talking to her before heading home after a long day at work.  When she comes to, he ends up being the only friend she has.  But he’s still her doctor and any romantic relationship could land Jack in a lot of trouble.  After months of physical recovery, no-one has ever come to claim her and she’s left with nowhere to go.  But now that Jack’s not her doctor any longer, he quickly proposes and gives her everything she could ever need.  Most importantly, she’s happy.

Until her happiness is ripped away from her.

Flash forward a year later and while Jane is still grieving, she learns she’s about to get a new neighbour.  Enter Sebastian.  Mysterious and rich, there’s just something about him that feels familiar and sets her heart (amongst other things) racing.  The pair very quickly fall in love, but there are those that seek to destroy that love any way they can.

Vampire Next Door was a fairly quick read, taking me about four hours to finish.  The book kept me engaged and there wasn’t any event or character that had me rolling my eyes in annoyance or disbelief.  Overall, I really enjoyed this book, however there are a couple of things to be mindful of.

The book has massive skips in time and moves very quickly, especially until Sebastian enters the scene.  Once he’s there the story slows down a bit, but towards the end the time lapses reappear.  This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but sometimes the story moved so fast it was like ‘Bam Bam Bam’ between events.

It’s also a little predictable and by the end I was left feeling like a few things were unresolved.  How did Jack’s family feel about discovering who murdered him?  Elizabeth seemed to give up too easily.  Did Jane end up asking Sebastian to turn her?  Again, these issues aren’t major, but if they had been addressed I think the book would have felt more whole.  More complete.

Sebastian:  “I promise it’s great.  I’m just not used to solid foods.  I try to stick to a strict liquid diet.”
