Twitch

By Claire Marta

Synopsis

Still grieving from the tragic events in his homeland, Twitch is struggling to find a balance. While trying to control a new, unforseen side to his magic, the last thing he expects is to be consumed with thoughts of a pink haired girl with innocent grey eyes.

Bewitched and confused with the feelings Lexi stirs within him, Twitch is blindsided by the danger that surrounds him. What he thought he knew isn’t as solid as he believes.

With enemies drawing near, threatening both their lives, Twitch must master his new magic to survive, or be forever crippled by what has been unleashed.

Review

Twitch is one of the characters that makes The Hunter Chronicles Series so great.  The fifth book in this series is devoted to him.  In earlier books he was a supporting character and best friend to Jasmine.  I really love Twitch.  He always manages to survive and becomes stronger.

In this installment Twitch finds himself starting a relationship with Lexi.  I think Lexi is perfect for him but she has some secrets of her own.  She is such a great character.  With her connection to Asier and what she is, their relationship has so hurdles to get over. I can’t wait to see where Claire Marta takes this couple.

There was also the introduction of two new characters to this series.  Nelly and Zook were great and offered Twitch a true friendship and help when he needed it.

This book was so fast paced.  It was hard to put down.  I loved the action and the romance.  The only thing that I missed in this story was Jasmine.  Jasmine plays an important role in Twitch’s life, even if it is just as a friend.  She is mentioned but I was just expecting her to have some advise for Twitch as he started this new relationship.  I can’t wait for the next installment to this series!!!

Blind Magic

By Natalina Reis

Synopsis

Will her promise to heal the man who’s captured her heart put him in danger? In Natalina Reis’s whimsical novel of spells, desire, and unwavering determination, a hot detective with a painful past and an impulsive witch armed with potent tea are linked by an instant connection and the promise of possibility.

Marcy has never been in love. But when Oliver Dawson walks into her store, she falls head over heels. Unable to shake the feeling that she and Oliver were made for each other, for the first time in her life, the quirky witch considers casting a love spell for herself.

Oliver’s life is turned upside down when he’s shot and almost killed. Even though events haven’t been kind to the sexy police detective, he’s determined to make the best of his situation. But still, nothing could have prepared him for feisty Marcy breaking down his defenses, nor the healing tea that leaves him gagging.

Unconventional and hell-bent on getting her man, the little witch soon weaves her magic and captures his heart. He’s more than willing to give it to her, but when faced with his painful and turbulent past, neither are sure they’ll get their happily ever after.

Review

Blind Magic is a sweet romantic comedy.  Oliver is a detective that lost his sight on a protection detail and is having hallucinations.  Marcy is a white witch that helped one of Oliver’s friends and Oliver is hoping that she can cure him of his hallucinations.

From the moment Oliver met Marcy he found her intriguing and different.  He wants to get to know her better.  Marcy doesn’t know why Oliver is interested in her but she is completely smitten by him.

I really liked Marcy.  She was different and awkward at times.  Marcy knew who she was and totally embraced it.  She wasn’t going to change herself for anyone. Oliver is great.  He doesn’t want Marcy to change even though she is nothing like what his family had in mind for him.  He already had what had what his family had in mind for him and it didn’t work out.  In fact that part of his life is still haunting him.

This is the first time I have read Natalina Reis and this story is cute and adorable.  I love all the little insecurities that play out in this story.  These two characters make each other stronger. I really had fun getting to know both Marcy and Oliver.

The Pine Forest (The Iridescent Realm # 2)

By Michelle Dare

Synopsis

One touch, one spark, two lives forever changed.

Pine and Azure. The war between the two kingdoms lasted far too long. Peace was finally established, but the survivors would never forget who fought on the front lines. Oliver Sage had a reputation for being a ruthless knight. He’d seen enough death to last a lifetime and worked on putting the past behind him, although not all would let him forget.

Addison was the only daughter of King and Queen Azure. With three brothers, she knew she’d always be protected, but she also wanted to learn how to take care of herself. She was strong, had a good heart, and wanted to be treated as an equal. Magical abilities ran in her family, and she had one no one knew of.

Oliver had given his heart to one princess, until the night he dreamed of another. Addison was the last woman he should desire, especially given who she was. However, what if she wanted him as well? They’d hated each other their entire lives, but suddenly couldn’t resist the desire which built between them. There were also those who didn’t think they should be together. Forbidden romance could only stay hidden for so long in the dark depths of the Pine Forest.

Review

I’ve had a soft spot for Oliver since meeting him in THE AZURE KINGDOM.  It was so sad to see the woman he was promised, the woman he’d sworn to protect, the woman he was in love with, fall in love with someone else, and I really wanted him to get his own HEA.  THE PINE FOREST did not disappoint.

I really liked Oliver, who is the Pine Kingdom’s fiercest knight and the King’s most trusted friend.  He’s cool under pressure and strong in battle.  He’s kind, loyal, honest and has a good sense of humour.  I liked Addison and thought her magical abilities were interesting, but I felt those abilities were not displayed to their full potential.  I was also disappointed that, for a woman who trains with soldiers and was constantly saying she could protect herself, we never saw her showcase her fighting skills.  I was waiting for her to go all badass on someone, but that didn’t happen.

As bad as this will sound, not a great deal happens in this book.  Oliver and Addison meet, they touch and feel a spark, they communicate in their dreams, they fall in love, her life is threatened, they defeat the threat, the end.  But you know what?  I think that’s a good thing, because sometimes there can be so much going on in a story that the relationship takes a backseat.  Here though, their relationship was front and centre.  Despite the connection they feel to each other, they don’t rush things.  Instead, their relationship builds up slowly and they get to know each other over several weeks while they come to terms with the fact that only a few months earlier, they were at war.

THE PINE FOREST is told in dual POVs, with the epilogue being told in Elliott Azure’s (Addison’s brother) POV, who I assume will get the next book in the series.  He is very hateful of the Pine Kingdom despite his family’s desire to put the past behind them, and I hope to see him come around in his own book.

The Iridescent Realm Series

Reliquary (Reliquary Series Book 1)

By Sarah Fine

Reliquary

Synopsis

Mattie Carver’s engagement party should have marked the start of her own personal fairy tale. But when her fiancé, Ben, is violently abducted the next morning, her desperate quest to find him rips her away from small-town life and reveals a shattering truth: magic is real—and Ben is hooked. It’s not the stuff of storybooks. It’s wildly addictive, capable of producing everything from hellish anguish to sensual ecstasy almost beyond human endurance.

Determined to find out who took Ben and why, Mattie immerses herself in a shadowy underworld and comes face-to-face with the darkly alluring Asa Ward, a rogue magic dealer, infamous hustler…and her missing fiancé’s estranged brother. Asa has the power to sense magic, and he realizes Mattie is a reliquary, someone with the rare ability to carry magic within her own body, undetected. Asa agrees to help find Ben on one condition: Mattie must use her uncommon talent to assist his smuggling operations. Now, from magic-laced Vegas casinos to the netherworld clubs of Bangkok, Mattie is on a rescue mission. With Asa by her side, she’ll face not only the supernatural forces arrayed against her but the all-too-human temptation that she fears she can’t resist.

Review

Reliquary is a story of a girl that has everything she thought was true ripped away from her when her fiance, Ben, is kidnapped the night after their engagement party.  When the police didn’t seem to be doing enough to find Ben, she decides that she owes it to him to do everything possible to help him.

As Mattie follows every lead she can, she finds out the world has magic and it is traded and stolen like a drug.  She also finds out that she is very special.  She is a Reliquary and is able to not only hold magic in her body but she is able to lock it away and make it basically undetectable.

While Mattie is following a lead into a underground magic club, she comes across Asa, Ben’s estranged brother. He never gives any indication that he is willing to do anything for his brother but at every opportunity to leave he chooses to stay with Mattie.  Along the way she finds our that Ben isn’t everything she thought he was, but she still loves him and will do anything for him.

I thought that this was an interesting take on a novel about magic.  I also loved the dynamic between Mattie and Asa.  Asa, even though he had his reasons, was a total ass through most of the book.  (And that kind of makes me love him even more).   Everyone has something to hid in this novel and I look forward to the next one in this series.
