Blind Magic

By Natalina Reis

Synopsis

Will her promise to heal the man who’s captured her heart put him in danger? In Natalina Reis’s whimsical novel of spells, desire, and unwavering determination, a hot detective with a painful past and an impulsive witch armed with potent tea are linked by an instant connection and the promise of possibility.

Marcy has never been in love. But when Oliver Dawson walks into her store, she falls head over heels. Unable to shake the feeling that she and Oliver were made for each other, for the first time in her life, the quirky witch considers casting a love spell for herself.

Oliver’s life is turned upside down when he’s shot and almost killed. Even though events haven’t been kind to the sexy police detective, he’s determined to make the best of his situation. But still, nothing could have prepared him for feisty Marcy breaking down his defenses, nor the healing tea that leaves him gagging.

Unconventional and hell-bent on getting her man, the little witch soon weaves her magic and captures his heart. He’s more than willing to give it to her, but when faced with his painful and turbulent past, neither are sure they’ll get their happily ever after.

Review

Blind Magic is a sweet romantic comedy.  Oliver is a detective that lost his sight on a protection detail and is having hallucinations.  Marcy is a white witch that helped one of Oliver’s friends and Oliver is hoping that she can cure him of his hallucinations.

From the moment Oliver met Marcy he found her intriguing and different.  He wants to get to know her better.  Marcy doesn’t know why Oliver is interested in her but she is completely smitten by him.

I really liked Marcy.  She was different and awkward at times.  Marcy knew who she was and totally embraced it.  She wasn’t going to change herself for anyone. Oliver is great.  He doesn’t want Marcy to change even though she is nothing like what his family had in mind for him.  He already had what had what his family had in mind for him and it didn’t work out.  In fact that part of his life is still haunting him.

This is the first time I have read Natalina Reis and this story is cute and adorable.  I love all the little insecurities that play out in this story.  These two characters make each other stronger. I really had fun getting to know both Marcy and Oliver.

Wicked Kiss (Realm Enforcers #4)

By Rebecca Zanetti

Synopsis

Working as an informant for the DEA, Victoria Monzelle is used to living on the edge. But she’s not a big fan of getting kidnapped. And definitely not by a bunch of bad boy witches with fancy-colored fire to shoot at people. So when Adam Dunne shows up and claims to be a witch enforcer, she’s not going to put her life in his hands based on his word, no matter how smooth and smart and beautifully Irish his words sound. But on the run from a tribunal of witches, she isn’t going to make it far . . .

Before she knows it, Adam’s word is all that stands between her and execution. Sophisticated, just-gotta-ruffle-him Adam has vowed to make her his one eternal mate, wild and unpredictable as she is-to save her from a sentence of certain death. But Tori isn’t interested in being anyone’s pity date. And if they think she’s unpredictable now, they should see what’s coming next . . .

Review

In Wicked Kiss we are taken on an adrenaline ride from beginning to end.  Rebecca Zanetti gave us a treat with Adam Dunne.  We were given some insight into Adam in Wicked Burn when he came to help Nikolaj Veis and Simone Brightston.  Tori was kidnapped with Bear and brought to Ireland.  She was thrown into a world that she didn’t know existed and now she is given a death sentence by the head of the Council for the things that she has seen unless she mates Adam Dunne.

I adored Adam.  He is in a tough position trying to stay an enforcer while his family is in hiding plus keeping Tori safe.  He knows that she is special but he doesn’t know in what way.  He is also working undercover trying to find out who is making Apollo.

Tori has no idea what’s going on.  She has been taken and now she has to figure out how to get out of a bad situation.  Tori is head strong and will not be forced into anything.  She also has secrets of her own.  She has a gift that no one else knows about.

I had so much fun with this story.  It has everything that I have come to love about this series in the perfect balance.  Including Humour, tons of action and a little heartache with a romance. Adam and Tori are perfect for each other but getting these two together is challenging.  I especially liked Tori.  She knew she was different and realized that made her special. There is a lot that goes on in this story and I don’t want to give any spoilers away.  I can’t wait for Bear’s story.

My Brother’s Keeper (Bewitched and Bewildered # 5)

By Alanea Alder

br-my-brothers-keeper

Synopsis

Two hundred years ago Kendrick Ashwood had a premonition that showed him the gruesome image of his baby brother being killed in the line of duty while serving with the Alpha Unit. When centuries go by and Keelan is still alive and well, he begins to relax. He believes that his prayers sent to the Gods to make him wrong this one time have been answered.

As Kendrick feels his godsdaughter’s magic flare out of control he immediately merges with her in an attempt to rein it in. That is when he learns of the tragedy that has taken his only family away from him.

Using every resource at his disposal he immediately heads for Lycaonia to find out for himself who would be suicidal enough to harm his brother. What he finds shocks him to his core.

Anne Bennett gets a phone call that changes her life. Her new best friend Keelan has been hurt and his commander is asking her to move in to help take care of him. Her heart breaks when she hears from his family that the dreams she has been having of them together were shared by Keelan and that he was meant to be her mate. Upon meeting Kendrick, her entire world is shaken. His more mature appearance and perpetual frown makes him look more like the man from her dreams than Keelan ever did.

As the Alpha Unit races to find the enemies who have stolen Keelan’s soul and covered Lycaonia in black magic, Kendrick begins to uncover dreadful truth behind the necklaces. When turning to Anne feels more natural than it should, Kendrick faces the fact that Anne truly is his mate.

As the paranormal world teeters on the brink of chaos, he finds himself protecting not his brother’s mate, but his own.

Review

MY BROTHER’S KEEPER is the fifth book in the Bewitched and Bewildered series and was another great read.  The story continues on from MY SAVIOR and follows the mating of Kendrick (witch) and Anne (human).  As with the previous books, the focus is still on the ferals and the necklaces that give them paranormal abilities they normally wouldn’t possess.  Here, we find out how the necklaces are made, and that information is truly terrifying.

Kendrick is Keelan’s older brother, and if you’ve read the previous book you will know that Keelan “died” protecting Amelia and the Alpha Unit from a trap that would have stripped them of their souls.  I thought Kendrick was going to be a stick-in-the-mud, but I loved his character.  He fits in perfectly with the members of the Alpha Unit and their mates.  In fact, he’s almost like a male version of Meryn; they think alike and both have a huge thirst for knowledge.

Anne is a trained nurse, brought in by the Unit to look after Keelan, who they all think is her mate.  Turns out it was the right family, but the wrong brother.  Other than saying she’s nice and that she also fits in with the men and women of the house, there’s not much else I can say about her because the story focused on Kendrick and the necklaces.

MY BROTHER’S KEEPER is told in dual POVs, with the epilogue being told in Elizabeth’s as she and Meryn are summoned by her uncle to the vampire city of Noctem Falls.  I get the impression that the next several books will take place in Noctem Falls and will focus on the Unit members there finding their mates.  We still don’t know who is behind the creation of the necklaces, so that story arc is still ongoing.  As I’ve come to expect with this series, the story had me laughing throughout: from Meryn’s ranking system to the Girl Scout cookies.  On to the next book.

My Savior (Bewitched and Bewildered # 4)

By Alanea Alder

br-my-savior

Synopsis

Amelia has dreamt of her mate since she was a little girl. All her life visions of a golden prince have warmed her heart and promised a fairy-tale future. She longs for the day when they will finally be together.

When the fateful day arrives and she meets Darian for the first time, she is nearly destroyed by his unequivocal rejection. His continued denial of their destined relationship has her doubting her own self worth and the visions she has had all her life.

Darian is teetering on the edge. He refuses to acknowledge Amelia as his mate and shadows continue to spread across his heart. He has grown used to the emptiness in his soul and almost fears the barrage of emotions she elicits. When an unexpected tragedy sends Darian spiraling into a hopeless abyss, will Amelia have the strength to pull him out, or will she succumb to her own darkness?

Review

MY SAVIOR is the fourth book in the Bewitched and Bewildered series and was another read that I couldn’t put down and finished very quickly.  The story continues on from MY HEALER and follows the mating of Darian (fae) and Amelia (human/witch).  As with the previous books, Meryn is still the driving force behind the ongoing story arc, but Amelia’s empath abilities play a big role in discovering a vital clue about the ferals.

Amelia is a human/witch hybrid who has been dreaming of her mate since she was six years old.  Thirty years later, the man of her dreams has changed drastically; Darian is shrouded in darkness and is a small step away from turning feral.  With her bright and bubbly personality, and with help from Darian’s family, she’s able to pull him back from the edge.  Amelia is also related to Meryn, giving Meryn connections to four powerful families⎯five if you include Darian’s.  I can’t really say much about Darian because other than his spiralling condition, this book focuses more on Amelia and Meryn.  I will say though, the description of him in his robe was damn hot.

MY SAVIOR is told in dual POVs and in the epilogue we were introduced to a new character who will get the next book.  When I started reading this series, I assumed it was going to be six books long because there are six men living in the house.  But an event in this book had me questioning my assumption, so I checked out the author’s Facebook page and found out that she’s planning about twenty books in this series.  Twenty books!!!  While I don’t mind reading a series, I do get turned off from reading one that has more than ten books in it.  Trying to keep track of characters, events and important information gets too hard, especially when all the books haven’t been released yet.  That being said, I will continue with the series because I am enjoying it, but once I finish with the next two books that I’ve already bought, I think I’m going to hold off until several more books have been released.  Once again, there were a lot of laughs to be had (vaginoplasty⎯enough said), but this book was dark and sad in parts.  Looking forward to book # 5.

Forbidden: Othala Witch Collection (Sector Twelve)

By Shannon Eckrich

forbidden

Synopsis

Bestselling author Shannon Eckrich’s FORBIDDEN is the twelfth novel in the dystopian paranormal romance collective, The Othala Witch Collection.

Falling in love isn’t supposed to be deadly.

In Sector Twelve, being a Natural isn’t only dangerous, it’s a death sentence. And Layna just happens to be one. If the council were to find out, they would surely kill her, regardless whether her sister is the Regent or not. She had sworn to her mother she would keep her abilities a secret, and she has no intentions of breaking that promise. Then Seth came along.

Seth is also a Natural, and Layna not only finds herself drawn to him and his powers, but the harder she falls for him, the more her past begins to emerge. Memories which were erased to keep her safe. To keep her hidden. And to keep her away from Seth.

According to a prophecy, Layna has the ability to stop her sister and the council from destroying the sector. And only Seth can help her. But there’s one problem. Seth isn’t only her true soul mate, but according to the prophecy, he’s destined to kill her. Unless, she can change the future.

Review

Forbidden is a story of love and betrayal.

Layna is a natural who is forced to keep this secret from everyone she knows.  Naturals are not accepted and feared.  They are to be exterminated.  Layna has a somewhat good life being the sister of the current Regent.  She goes and does her job everyday until the day she runs into Seth.

Seth is also a natural who is on the run.  Once he mets up with Layna he could not let her go. He also keeps another secret from her that changes everything for her.

Layna could not  explain her attraction to Seth.  Even though he knew they should not be together, once they found each other they could not be parted.

All the characters were well written and helped shape the future for this sector.  I especially loved Layna’s best friend, Kesi.  Layna’s sister was also a force to be reckoned with, but just not in a good way.  Everyone was keeping secrets from Layna and as everything unfolds her life is forever changed.

Forbidden is a fast paced and heart clinching.  I had not realized that this was part a series when I selected this book but it could be read as a stand-alone.  I didn’t feel like I was missing anything.  It also made me want to go back and look at the previous installments to this series.

Girl Divided (The Binding Series Book1)

By Cordelia Michelsen

girl-divided

Synopsis

Ellis Calhoun and Vivian Parker share a lavish New York lifestyle, but their relationship is anything but conventional. Driven by his need for control, Ellis, a mysterious and sexy corporate raider, feeds off Vivian’s desire to submit, before she herself was even aware of that desire.
But soon, unexplained urges that aren’t her own begin to drive a wedge between them, challenging Vivian’s identity as Ellis’s subservient lover. Even stranger, she has no recollection of her moments of defiance. Vivian loses time and memories for no reason she can understand. But maybe there’s an explanation after all…Delphine.
Girl:Divided is Book One in The Binding Series, a story of what happens when the real world and the supernatural world collide. Enter into this realm of mystery, intrigue and kinky sex in this paranormal romance series.

Review

Girl Divided is a dark romance about a girl who meets a dominant man and outside unforeseen force that will change their lives forever.

Vivian is a successful chef who owns a vegan restaurant in New York City.  She probably drinks a little more than she should.  And she really only has one friend.

Ellis is extremely successful in his own right.  He has very little patience for anything out of his control.  He also has a very dominant sexual appetite.

Delphine is somewhat of a mystery.  She has a definite agenda and will stop at nothing to tear Ellis down and take control of Vivian.

I thought that Girl Divided started very strong.  I was instantly drawn to Ellis and I loved Vivian’s spitfire attitude.  But I felt that Ellis started playing a confusing game with Vivian with little to no communication.  After Vivian’s accident he totally took over her whole life and it seemed everything that drew him to her disappeared. I’m still unclear the exact connection between Vivian and Delphine.

After the Delphine factor was introduced my anxiety went up. Ellis’s possession was out of his control and he didn’t like it.  I felt sad for Vivian because she just wanted to be his perfect submissive and an outside force was going to make sure that didn’t happen. I wanted Vivian to still have a piece of herself before she meet Ellis and I wanted Ellis to love her which I’m not sure he did.

There were plenty of hot and steamy moments in this story.  I liked where the story was going but one thing that I was missing was the romance.  It just didn’t seem like Ellis was as interested in loving Vivian as much as possessing her.

Diablo Lake: Moonstruck #1

By Lauren Dane

moonstruck

Synopsis

In Diablo Lake, Tennessee, a town populated by werewolves, witches and more, magic woven deep into the earth protects the town’s secrets from outsiders.

Katie Grady left Diablo Lake to get over a humiliating breakup. But her family needs her help, so she’s back, in a sublet right across the hall from the guy she’s lusted after for years. Jace Dooley is hotter than ever, and their friendship picks up along with massive doses of grown-up chemistry.

The very scent of Katie sharpens Jace’s canines, makes the wolf within him stir. There’s nothing more alluring to a Pack Alpha than a sexy female who is so very in charge. She won’t be coddled, but if he plays his hand just right she might be convinced to become his.

Katie presents a challenge to Jace’s wolf nature, whose chief instinct is to protect. Especially now that she’s coming into the magic that is her birthright—and suddenly Jace isn’t the only one who’s interested in Katie or the raw power she’s just learning to use.

Review

Diablo Lake is a town that is inhabited by shifters, witches and guardians. There are two packs of werewolf’s in this town that are in a power struggle and one witch that stirs up everything.  But this is a story of a girl that was humiliated into leaving thinking that she could build a life away from magic.  Little does she know that it takes moving back to help her ailing father to truly find her place in the world.

I really adored Katie.  She is a bright spirit that embraces her quirkiness. Some of the stuff that she says made me laugh out loud.  And she is completely ferocious in protecting the people she loves.  Jace, the werewolf that Katie has had a crush on since she was young, has a strength to lead and protect his pack.  He finds himself in a power struggle of his own, yet his only thought is protection.

There are many other characters that play a role in this story of shaping Katie’s evolution into her new found power.  One of my favorite characters that helps Katie on her journey is her best friend Aimee, we all need a friend like her in our lives.  This story has many strong female characters.  I love the way this series has started and look forward to the next story.
