The Wingman

By Natasha Anders

Synopsis

She was supposed to be his one-night distraction. But their attraction is undeniable.

Introverted Daisy McGregor is used to being a wallflower, but what she lacks in style, she makes up for with an acerbic wit, a passion for life, and a deep devotion to her family. So she’ll suffer through her sister Dahlia’s bachelorette party and accept the cloud of pity for going stag to the wedding.

Out at the pub, sexy bad boy Mason Carlisle is a reluctant wingman tasked with entertaining Daisy while his brother flirts with her oldest sister, Daffodil. When the plan fails and Mason’s true intent is revealed, he feels intense guilt—and a sensual spark of desire for the unlikeliest of women.

Daisy decides to use this unfortunate encounter to her advantage: to make it up to her, Mason will be another kind of wingman, playing the role of her boyfriend and wedding date. Will their ruse unravel completely—or will Mason and Daisy’s undeniable attraction ignite a scorching love affair that knows no rules?

Review

THE WINGMAN is the second book I’ve read from Natasha Anders, the first one being THE UNWANTED WIFE which was amazing.  This story was less intense and angsty than that one, but still enjoyable.

I liked both Mason and Daisy, who are very nice people, but they also frustrated me a little with how sensitive and how easily offended they were.  They both also lack confidence, but Daisy more so than Mason.  All her life her sisters, Dahlia & Daffodil, have been called the pretty one and the cute one respectively, while Daisy has always been referred to as the other one, so I can understand her lack of confidence.

I couldn’t figure out why Mason didn’t think he was good enough for a relationship because he was a nice guy.  Unfortunately, this belief has him pulling Daisy in, only to push her away over and over, which got tiresome.  What I liked most about him was that right from the start, he was disgusted by the things people said about Daisy and defended her at every opportunity.  My favourite scene was when he defended her against those pigs on the golf course.

THE WINGMAN is told in dual POVs, with Daff getting some chapters in her POV as well.  At the time of writing this review, this book appears to be a stand-alone, but I get the feeling that Daisy’s two sisters will also get a story of their own.  There’s not much sex to be found in this story, with the first sex scene not coming (no pun intended) until almost the 80% mark.  Until that point, Mason and Daisy spent their time getting to know each other and slowly falling in love.  Would I read the next book in the series?  Yes, I would.

And Joe will have to put everything on the line to save Zoe, when secrets of her past resurface—and threaten to tear them apart…

Review

Brighter than the Sun has returned me to the KGI series I adore and ultimately into the fold that is the Kelly family. Maya made me cry for the last 1/4 of this book and when the letter was read I sobbed – just breathtaking and beautiful – Marlene and her love for Rusty I cannot wait for this story to play out.  Now back to Joe and Zoe’s story of love which is going to be another one I will cherish as I knew in my heart his would be as special.  Like his twin Nathan’s was, their connection as brothers and then to include Nathan’s wife also completing the connection with Zoe as the awesome foursome – I was so happy for them all.

Joe’s story gave us a slow build up of romance through multiple dates and then also Rusty playing her part as the match making friend. The friendship moments between Rusty and Zoe I really enjoyed as Rusty to me always felt lonely so I am so happy she has a friend like Zoe.  The second half picks up a quick pace for the mystery & suspense part and I look forward to seeing these two charcters in the upcoming KGI books to see the little pitter patter of feet as these Kelly families breed like rabbits. When Joe and Zoe finally had their night of passion well Maya definately gave us lots of hot and steamy moments.

One of my favourite couples in this story was Steele and Maren and how they cared for Zoe after her ordeal, it makes me want to go back and read their love story again as he is like hard nut on the outside but all soft and gooey on the inside.  Maren has been one of my favourite ladies in KGI and also Sophie – her story is my favourites of the series.

Now onto the big surprise that is Rusty’s part in this whole story and from about the last quarter of this story I had endless watery eyes and upon the time I had to read her letter I sobbed for what she is losing, I am so angry right now for Rusty, like poke in the eye angry, I want her to come back to the fold with some hot shot boyfriend to rub salt in the wounds of these men, I want not only Sean to be slapped in the face but some of her so called brothers to freakin stand up for her – no judgements. I am so sad for Rusty, she has such issues with trust and being accepted and these brothers of hers jump down her throat and I find them some times very condescending to her. The shining light in her life are Frank and Marlene and heaven help these boys when Marlene finally makes them stand up and be accountable for her girl taking the course of action she did at the end of this book – I am so sad right now.

Only one part I found a bit tiresome was the big War Room scene, so many names thrown about I admit I became a bit confused and spent time thinking ok they are with that team, who are they again and trying to recall all of the players in each group.

Overall I loved this story and cannot believe how emotional I was for Rusty and I know her story will be that last book of this series and I can honestly say I will probably cry through most of her book!

A Harmless Little Plan (Harmless # 3)

By Meli Raine

Synopsis

Turns out there was a second video from that awful night four years ago. Mine wasn’t the only tape.

Too bad mine wasn’t the worst.

Drew can’t protect me no matter how hard he tries, but the roles are flipped now. I have to help him, but I’m not wired that way. Not anymore. That one night changed me more than anyone knows.

More than anyone could predict.

Three men think they’re above the law. They’re right.

But I’m willing to go beneath the law to make sure they never harm anyone else. Their threats don’t scare me.

When you have nothing left to lose because someone took it all away, you create the most dangerous creature imaginable.

Me.

Game over.

Review

After loving and quickly devouring the first two books in the Harmless trilogy, I’m sad to say that I found A HARMLESS LITTLE PLAN to be a little disappointing.  Why?  Because despite the happy-for-now ending, I felt there was no real closure in this story.  There are a lot of loose threads and unanswered questions, and I am not a fan of either of those things.

After finding out in the first book that Lindsay’s three friends lied to the police and media about her rape, we never heard about them again or found out why they turned against her.  What did they get out of it?  We never found out why Drew’s friends turned against him either.  Yes, they got money and fame, but what they did to Lindsay and Drew was so hateful and violent that there had to be more to it than just getting paid.  We do find out that people within the NSA, CIA and FBI all have their fingers in this scandalous pie, but we never heard about them being arrested.  Then I have to wonder, if the man pulling the strings was so well connected, why did he feel so threatened and why did he need to have Lindsay raped in the first place?  But then I guess if there’s no rape, there’s no story.  It was also mentioned that this same man may have been involved in the killing of Drew’s parents, and that someone high up (we don’t know where) targeted Drew because they think he’s a threat.  Both of these claims were never investigated and we didn’t find out if these claims were true.  These are just a handful of questions I was left with at the end of this book.  Will they be answered in another book or series, or will we be left hanging?

The first 50% of the book is where all the excitement lies.  After that, the book slows down a lot as we watch Lindsay and Drew heal from their ordeal.  I liked both Drew and Lindsay and was very glad to see them get their revenge and happy ending.  I was hoping to find just one redeeming quality in Lindsay’s mother, but by the end of this book I hated her as much as I did in the beginning of the series.  Throughout the series, I’ve alternated between liking and hating her father, and in the end I found him gutless.  He does love his daughter, but I think he loves his career more and will put it before her.

A HARMLESS LITTLE PLAN is told in dual POVs and is the final book in the Harmless trilogy, which cannot be read as stand-alones.  There is no epilogue, but it comes with a HFN ending.  Honestly, if all the loose threads had been taken care of, if nothing was left unresolved, this would have been a 5❤️ read for sure.

A Harmless Little Ruse (Harmless # 2)

By Meli Raine

Synopsis

She has no idea what she’s doing. Loose cannons never hit their targets.
And they take out plenty of collateral damage.

Four years ago Lindsay experienced the unspeakable right before me, and I couldn’t stop them.
But that’s all changed now.

When her father, Senator Bosworth, contacted me to ask — demand — that I protect her, it was a second chance. A shot at redemption.
An opportunity to right an unspeakable wrong.

Controlling Lindsay as she seeks her revenge on the monsters who hurt her won’t be hard.
Containing my own out-of-control feelings for Lindsay and keeping up this ruse of cold-blooded distance will be.

Even harder than admitting to her what really happened that night four years ago.
It turns out I don’t have to, though.
Someone else did it for me.
And I’ll make sure they regret it.

Review

A HARMLESS LITTLE RUSE continues on from A HARMLESS LITTLE GAME, however in this part of the trilogy we are seeing the story from Drew’s POV.  Again, this review will be kind of vague because I can’t say anything without giving away spoilers.

At the end of book 1, Drew and Lindsay rekindled their relationship and appeared to be on the same page.  But in the beginning of this book, Lindsay does something that has him questioning her feelings and intentions.  While she spent most of the first book questioning whether she could trust him, now it’s his turn to question whether he can trust her.  They spend this book trying to heal old wounds while Drew works on his revenge plans against those who hurt them, but they always seem to be one step ahead of him, as proven by the cliffhanger we are left with.  I’m still not a fan of her parents, who seem to care more about the election than their only child, and I still don’t know who is friend or foe.

We learn more about what happened that night four years ago, and I honestly didn’t think I could hate those three monsters more, but I was wrong.  Despite the new information, all the questions I had from the first book remain unanswered, and I truly hope they will be answered in the next book.  This was another quick read that easily held my attention.

A Harmless Little Game (Harmless # 1)

By Meli Raine

Synopsis

Four years ago I lost my virginity on live, streaming television.
Too bad I wasn’t awake for it.
The video went viral. Of course it would. A Senator’s daughter on camera? Wouldn’t you click “share”? Besides, that’s what three of the four guys in the video did.
Share.

They shared me.

But that fourth guy? The nondescript one in the background in the upper left corner of the screen, just sitting on the couch? The only one who did nothing?
Not one single thing.
That was my boyfriend, Drew.
And that was the last time I saw him.

Until today, when my father—now on a path to the White House—hired him as head of security for my new team as I return home after four years of “recovering” in an undisclosed location that involved white lab coats, needles, pills and damage control.

You see, the other three guys never went to jail. Never had charges pressed.
Never faced consequences.
Until today.
Game on.

Review

WOW!  A HARMLESS LITTLE GAME is a book that grabbed me right from the very first page and did not let me go.  I know a book is good when I’m up until 1am reading.  Since this is the first book in the Harmless trilogy that focuses on Lindsay and her desire for revenge, I can’t say much, so this will be a fairly short review.

What Lindsay went through four years ago was horrific.  What’s worse is that the men involved got away with it.  If that doesn’t fire up your anger, I don’t know what will.  I really felt for her and I admired the strength and courage she displayed to stand up for herself.  I also liked Drew, who is a very quiet and controlled man.  I have a feeling that when his control slips, the fallout will be huge and it’s going to be a sight to behold.  I absolutely hated her parents, especially her mother.  Honestly, if it turns out that she had something to do with what happened to her daughter, I would not be surprised at all.  The scene where Lindsay stood up to her mother was awesome and I was so cheering her on.

This book left me with a lot of questions.  Questions that I’m sure will be answered in the following two books.  How did those men get away with it?  Who is protecting them?  Why did they do it?  Did someone put them up to it?  Who is her friend?  Who is her enemy?  Who is telling the truth?  I have so many more questions, but I can’t list them here without giving away some spoilers.

This first part of the trilogy takes place over two to three days and ends in a cliffhanger.  I did find it a little repetitive at times, and I also got annoyed when Drew kept telling Lindsay that she had no idea what she was in for.  I wanted to yell at him to just tell her already, but I guess that would have shortened the story quite a bit.  A HARMLESS LITTLE GAME is told only in Lindsay’s POV, with the next book in the trilogy being told in Drew’s POV, which I’m really looking forward to because I can’t wait to get inside his head.

Please Note:  This book contains scenes that may be triggers for some people.

By T. K. Leigh

It’s a race against the clock for Alexander to put the pieces together and find out who has taken his daughter and what they want from him. As information comes to light, he is forced to bury the guilt he feels after losing his fellow team member and focus instead on finding and saving his daughter…

Before it’s too late.

Review

Vanished is an appropriate title for this novel.  It’s meaning can be taken on so many levels through this read.  On an emotional level, a love that’s vanished replaced with grief. Compassion that’s disappeared replaced with anger and fear.  On a more physical level, loved ones are taken for reasons beyond comprehension.

This novel is split into three different parts.  Part one was definitely the hardest part for me to get through.  I really saw Rayne’s pain.  She grieves for the life that she will never have back and she wants someone to pay for that.  Rayne is a broken woman who now sees a way to help alleviate some of her suffering.  We also got a sense of the man that Alexander has become through the years.

Part two was were the mystery really picked up.  Alexander is on the frantic hunt for his daughter who has been taken.  He is piecing together who and why this is happening.  I loved his relationships with all of family.  And he has a really special bond with his wife.  I also liked his relationship with Agent Moretti.  They have the relationship need to get the job done.

Part three also continues the mystery but also ramped up on the thriller part of the novel.  We get to the real issue of why Alexander’s daughter was taken.  There are actually two twists in this part.  One I saw coming but the second took me by surprise.

This novel deals with deep issues at it’s core.  The first part jumped around a little so I found it a little confusing to start with and I found it extremely dramatic.  Parts two and three I couldn’t put down.  T.K. Leigh has an unique way of writing.  She broke this book up not just by parts but by hours as well. She understands that in a kidnapping every minute counts.   She also conveys emotion in a powerful way.

Carnal Obsession: His Heart’s Prisoner (Carnal Series #4)

By Reily Garrett

Synopsis

Life on the street molds emotional athletes.

Three years ago, her brother’s death marked the beginning of Kendra’s new life, an existence with no home, no family, and no friends. Time in the underground byways toughened her emotional shell with the loose association of like-minded street rats where survival meant compromise and constant vigilance.

Before he died, Billy had sent her a package in care of his teammate, Conner. For Kendra, re-entrance into polite society comes with a deadly price, as betrayal comes from both sides of the grave.

Conner Crofton owns the BDSM club Ambrosia. After failing to protect his teammate on their last covert mission, penance takes form as a promise to safeguard Billy’s little sister, a girl he’d unknowingly remanded to a world of darkness and uncertainty, deception and psychopathic stalkers.

The past will always haunt us. Each must earn forgiveness and trust as passion, guilt, deception, and betrayal, interweave a destiny formed long ago. A romantic suspense with a twist.

Review

Carnal Obsession: His Heart’s Prisoner is Connor’s and Kendra’s story.  Conner’s a protective man who sees Kendra in a sisterly way.  Kendra is a tough girl who had to grow up quick and always had a crush on Conner.  Because of the murder of Kendra’s brother she lost touch with everyone she knew.

Connor has a lot to make up for.  He didn’t realize that Kendra had gone missing.  He thought that she moved with her parents.  If he had known that she was living on the streets he would have started looking for her much sooner.  Connor always felt a sisterly bond with Kendra because of the age difference he never considered her more than that.

Kendra who is now grown and hardened up by the streets is trying to show Connor that she is not longer his best friend’s little sister.  She is now a woman who has always had a crush on him.  It’s just convincing Connor that he is allowed to feel more than just brotherly love for her.

Then there is they mystery of Kendra’s brother death and why he left her the package.  This package put her in a dangerous situation which Connor must protect her from.  This has put everyone on high alert, including Connor’s brothers.

Carnal Obsession: His Heart’s Prisoner is a completely addictive read.  It, like the other novels in this series, had great pacing and a great story line.  I loved his brothers, they provided some very humous moments.  And it also had a mystery to figure out.  I also loved that Connor had a inner dilemma that he had to work through and Kendra had to find her way back into the world again.

Justice Ascending (The Scorpius Syndrome #3)

By Rebecca Zanetti

Synopsis

Before surviving the Scorpius bacterium, Tace Justice was a good ole Texas cowboy who served his country and loved his mama. After Scorpius, the world became dark, dangerous, and deadly—and so did he. The Vanguard medic is stronger, faster, and smarter than before, but he’s lost the line between right and wrong. His passion is absolute, and when he focuses it on one woman, there’s no turning back for either of them…

Sami Steel has been fighting to survive right alongside Tace, convincing the Vanguard soldiers she’s one of them. In truth, Sami is a former hacker turned government agent who worked at The Bunker, where scientists stored both contaminants and cures. Only she knows the location, and she’s not telling. Yet when sexual fire explodes between her and Tace, she’ll face even that hell again to save him.

Review

In this third novel in The Scorpius Syndrome Series, Justice Ascending continues with the high adrenaline formula that makes this series so addictive.   From beginning to end, I couldn’t put this book down.  And I have to say that the ending was fantastic.  The action does not stop until the last page.

Justice Ascending is Tace Justice’s story.  He has been infected with Scorpius and is slowing turning into a Ripper.  This story is about him doing his best to hold on to what little humanity he has left.  He truly is a good guy at his core but he is losing his conscience and it is becoming easier to make the tough decisions between who gets to live and who doesn’t.

Sami has become one of the most trusted lieutenants in Jax Mercury’s army but she has many secrets.  She doesn’t realize the depth of feelings that she has for Tace until she starts to explore them.  She believes and trusts the man that Tace is.

Justice Ascending is action packed and continues to follow the Vanguard people and the threats against it. Jax does a great job of holding these people together against many odds, from outside and inside.  Jax is there for all his people including Tace and Sami.  He learns that even his top people have secrets to keep.

Rebecca Zanetti put tons of action, emotion and humour into this story.  I fell for Tace in Mercury Striking so I was excited for this story.  I was not disappointed, I love the fact that this is a new world and these people have to find a new way to live and love.  Tace and Sami’s relationship is an example of that.  They are given many obstacles to overcome including Tace’s dissent into his illness.

When an unknown enemy holds all the cards, how can they survive the wicked games?

Review

WICKED GAMES is the first book in the Steele Security series and the first book I’ve read from A.D. Justice.  It is told in the past and present day, with a good portion of the story taking place between three to five years ago.  I can’t say much about the main characters because I felt the arms trafficking side of the story overshadowed them.  Or maybe that was the part of the story I was most interested in and enjoyed the most.  I will say that the person behind the arms trafficking was obvious and I hope it was supposed to be.

I could be wrong, but I believe this may be the author’s debut novel, which would explain the few technical issues I had problems with.  The story is told in multiple POVs, with the POV changing without notice, often several times within the same chapter.  There were occasional gaps in time that also came without notice.  One chapter, told in Brianna’s POV, takes place over several months, then the very next chapter, told in Noah’s POV, starts all the way back from where the previous chapter started.  These things disrupted the flow of the story, and overall I struggled with this style of writing.  Moving on, I thought it was odd that when Brianna was thinking about her parents, she would refer to them by their first names instead of Mom and Dad.  She would do the same with Noah, one minute calling him Noah and then switching to Reaper.  Lastly, Reaper’s team was called out several days before Brianna was to go home, but later on she says his team was called out just hours before she left.  While this is not a huge mistake, it is a sloppy one.

Despite what I’ve said above, overall I thought WICKED GAMES was an okay read, one that came with a HEA for Noah and Brianna.  I bought the first four books in this series as a box-set, and I will give the second book a try before deciding whether or not I will continue with the series.

Satisfaction (A Lawless Novel #2)

By Lexi Blake

Synopsis

Brandon Lawless is a man on a mission: obtain the information that will clear his father’s name. He’s willing to do whatever it takes—even seduce his enemy’s personal assistant, the beautiful and innocent Carly Hendricks. But with her beguiling smile and captivating intelligence, Brandon soon realizes he doesn’t want to deceive Carly, he wants to win her over—both in the boardroom and the bedroom.

Then a twisted crime leaves Carly vulnerable and Brandon finds himself reeling. The stakes of his mission are now life or death—Carly’s life. And Brandon realizes he’s lost his heart to an amazing woman and his plan must succeed, because the stakes are no longer just revenge, but a once in a lifetime love.

Review

Satisfaction is the second installment to the Lawless Family.  It centers around Brandon Lawless and we learn about his experience after their parents were murdered.

I love Bran, yes he does have his issues but I think he is the soul of the family.  He wants to be honest and upfront with everyone, including Carly.  He has a different way of looking at the world and he knows when his brother is about to take things too far.

Patricia Cain is a special kind of evil.  Where Bran is the soul of the family, Patricia has no soul. She uses everyone around her and she creates leverage so that people can’t get away from her, including Carly.

Carly is working her way back into the world after a failed marriage to a criminal. She works hard for everyone else and has a great heart.  Even though she is trapped in her situation, Carly knows when to help those around her.  She is extremely close to her sister who convinces her to start dating again through a dating app. She is conveniently paired with Drew. This is set up completely to continue with the Lawless plan of justice in the form of revenge.  Bran is sitting watching the cafe when he sees Carly.  He can’t let them pull her into their scheme without her knowing what is could happen to her.  He knows in his heart that she will choose to help them. Carly is perfect for Bran.  She hasn’t had it easy and still she has a great heart.

So much happens in Satisfaction.  Carly is attacked on two fronts and we get to see Bran be the hero we know he can be.  We also get to see Drew learn to be more of a human.  He is starting to see what revenge is doing to his family.  He does have a great heart to heart scene in this book and we also learn more about who he is attracted to.  Ian Taggart also made an appearance in this book.  We were given a treat with his insight of what is going on with the boys or in his words “puppies”.

Just like in other novels from Lexi Blake, she draws you in with emotion and humour.  You fall for all her characters and she knows how to write a villain.  I am excited to see what she has in store next for Drew.
