The Backup Boyfriend (The Boyfriend Chronicles # 1)

By River Jaymes

Synopsis

Professionally, Dr. Alec Johnson has almost reached his goals. As this year’s recipient of a humanitarian award with his ex, Dr. Tyler Hall, Alec’s work with the homeless is about to be recognized. Unfortunately, his personal life sucks because now he has to attend several events alongside Tyler—with his ex’s new boyfriend in tow. In an attempt to lift his mood and break out of his rut, Alec purchases a motorcycle he has no idea how to start.

Dylan Booth doesn’t have time for Dr. Clueless and his fickle 1964 Harley, but the cocky mechanic can’t say no to the request for help. Having spent his teen years on the streets, and losing his best friend to HIV, Dylan decides teaching the do-gooder how to ride is the least he can do. But watching Alec flounder in his ex’s company throws Dylan into protector mode, and the confirmed hetero introduces himself as Alec’s new boyfriend.

The ex suspects Dylan is lying.

Alec claims Dylan’s plan is insane.

And Dylan’s not sure he can fake being gay.

But Dylan’s a master bullshitter, and the phony PDA soon turns ultra-hot. Alec can’t afford to get attached, and Dylan’s learned everyone eventually leaves. Unfortunately, playing the backup boyfriend is starting to feel way too real…

Review

I read THE BACKUP BOYFRIEND a few years ago and it was one of those stories that would pop into my head from time to time, even though I couldn’t remember the title or the author.  I was finally able to find it and re-read it to see if it was as good as I remembered.  It was.  I didn’t take a lot of notes, and it is slow moving with not a lot of action, but it was an enjoyable read.

Alec and Dylan are both very nice guys who have mutual friends, yet have never met.  Alec is the sweet one who has known he was gay since he was a teen and loves being in a relationship.  He comes across as the more sensitive and insecure of the two, but at the same time he loves topping Dylan.  Dylan is the complete opposite of Alec.  He’s straight, avoids commitment and is more rough around the edges than what Alec is used to.  He’s surprised by his feelings for Alec, but I liked how he wasn’t afraid to embrace them—for the most part.  I liked watching him grow and learn to accept the things he always thought he didn’t want.

THE BACKUP BOYFRIEND is told in dual POVs and while it’s part of a series, each book can be read as a stand-alone.  It comes with a sweet epilogue and a HFN ending for Dylan and Alec.

Hook (No Prisoners MC Novella)

By Lilly Atlas

Synopsis

After ten years away, Marcie finally ventures back to where she grew up. She isn’t in town for twenty-four hours when she crosses paths with Hook and Striker, the two boys who kept her safe and happy as a young girl. Only they aren’t boys anymore. They are fully grown, muscular, alpha men. Members of the No Prisoners Motorcycle Club. All through her teenage years, Marcie’s heart belonged to Hook. Not that he ever seemed to notice. And it appears that as an adult, not much has changed with regard to her feelings toward the sexy biker. But a bossy, alpha man is not what independent Marcie is looking for.

The moment Hook lays eyes on Marcie, it’s as though the last ten years apart never existed. Back when she was off limits, he wanted her, and it doesn’t take long before he realizes he still wants her. Marcie’s changed, though. She’s no longer a frightened teenager in need of a haven. Now she’s a beautiful, confident woman, and a bit too independent. Will Hook be able to convince Marcie a life with him wouldn’t stifle her freedom? Their relationship is tested when Marcie clings to her hard-won life and when an aspect of that life threatens not only their future together, but their safety as well.

Review

Hook is the third book of this series I have read, I have still not read book 1, in saying that this is a Novella, so this story is quick and there is immediate connection with the two main characters Marcie and Hook.

Hook centres around a few days where Marcie returns to bury her mother and we are given  quick glimpses back into her growing up and how her friendship with Hook and Striker form.  It is endearing the way these two guys looked after the young neighbour in their trailer park and it does help the reader to connect after their reunion and cements the affection between all three as friends.

Hook and Marcie’s sex scenes are passionate and steamy and do not disappoint and it was interesting to follow Marcie’s struggle with allowing her friends to help her and also to lean on the man who loves her.

Marcie’s ex boyfriend provides drama and suspense and ultimately entwines these two characters together in the end.

I read this Novella in a day, could not put it down and I could have honestly read a full novel on these two characters, they had great chemistry and friendship.

Techy (Devils Souls MC #2)

By LeAnn Ashers

Synopsis

Alisha

My story isn’t a very conventional one. I met my man online, which isn’t a shocking thing nowadays.

I sure didn’t know that he would rescue me from hell.

I had been stuck in hell with no way out. Then Techy swooped in with guns blazing and took me out of there. A knight in shining leather.

I didn’t expect to feel what I feel; that I would fall in love, that I would feel safe and protected.

I had never felt that before.

Until Techy.

Techy is a member of the Devil’s Souls MC, the most notorious MC in Texas. They love hard and fight harder. You mess with their family, hell is something you’d beg for.

Shit hits the fan when someone from my past comes to get what my dead father never gave back to him.

My name is Alisha and this is my story.

Techy

A man is after my woman.

He won’t be a man much longer.

He dares to try and take her from me?

Hell is something he’ll beg for. Because nobody, and I mean nobody, looks in Alisha’s direction in a way I don’t like. If they do? They’ll be eating their teeth.

If you threaten her? Death is an easy way out.

I will do whatever it takes to protect her.

This book has a HEA, with no cheating and a obsessed alpha. If you don’t like instalove this book isn’t for you.

Review

Firstly I love the cover of Techy!

Techy is definitely instalove with plenty of MC drama and action and for me it was too fast and I struggled at times with the flow of the story.  I wanted to stop and savour some moments and we just jumped ahead at times too frequently.

One story that did intrigue me is Vinney, Trey and Lani, now that had me wanting to know more about those three.

I admit have read an obscene amount of MC romance and there were just some situations in this story that just were a little out there.  Some of the scenes with the women and fighting other women and the over the top reactions just wore me down and I became annoyed with them.  Also they are apparently under threat and there is no lock downs, they go out to dinner without protection and I kept wondering at some point it is all going to come undone and then when it does the location is just bizarre when all through the book I hear of all the gadgets protecting the mc club and the tight security.

However I do want to say I loved the beginning when Techy rescues and helps in the recovery of Alisha, he definitely cares and loves her back from an awful physical encounter.  Alisha is a very naive character after being locked away by her father but I did enjoy watching their connection grow in the emotional and physical sense.

This is my second book by this author.

Fear the Beard (The Dixie Warden Rejects MC #2)

By Lani Lynn Vale

Synopsis

Tally is a twenty-year-old single mother struggling to finish nursing school. Has she made mistakes in life? Sure, but her daughter isn’t one of them. She works hard, she studies even harder, and she’s only a few weeks away from graduating.
She’s living her life the best she knows how when she witnesses a near miss motorcycle accident between a car and a biker. A biker that happens to be the most talked about teacher at her college.

The moment she meets those startling blue, narrowly-escaped-death eyes, she realizes quickly that life as she knows it has changed. No longer will she be content to let life pass her by, even if it puts everything she’s worked so hard for in jeopardy.

***

Tommy is a highly skilled doctor. A teacher. A veteran. A fully-patched member of The Dixie Wardens MC. He’s lonely, but also set in his ways. What will it take for this man to accept that he needs to make some changes in his life? Apparently, it’ll take a guy in a truck, who’s preoccupied with his phone rather than focused on the road, nearly plowing into him on his bike at seventy miles per hour. Oh, and a twenty-something year old nursing student witnessing the entire thing from only a few feet away.

It only takes a second, a single heartbeat in time, as he looks into her worry-filled eyes to realize that he’d give anything for a single night with her. He may lose his job in the process, but after that one incredible night turns into an amazing weekend, he knows it’s worth the risk for the promise of her forever

Review

Firstly I love the cover of Fear the Beard and also I love the Dedication.  I recommend you read it as the story will make so much more sense and it is just beautiful between Tally and Tallulah, the love this mother has for her daughter.  As soon as I realised Tally get’s Hangry I knew she was my kind of girl!

Another beautiful part of this story is the way Tommy is with Tallulah, it fits perfectly with him being a doctor, brought tears to my eyes with the way he cared for her and also Tally for that matter.  There was great humour and banter between the characters and the age difference between Tommy and Tally made sense as he provided the calm and mature comfort for her and Tally also was very mature for her age considering she had her daughter so young, it all just made sense.

Fear the Beard is paced perfectly and dual POV help connect all the stories and Hadley provided an interesting surprise and I also enjoyed Ghost.

Tommy and Tally’s sex scenes were passionate and full of fire and I really enjoyed watching their story grow including Tally’s family involvement and of course the MC and this story was ended perfectly.

Or when a dangerous looking silver fox comes rolling up her path on a FatBoy, and her digital output shows a deep loneliness, matching her own, in his ice-blue eyes.

He tries to avoid her, but with the little pixel peeper snapping everything in sight, she unintentionally risks his exposure.

And his focus needs to be sharp to keep her from danger.

Review

Shutter speed is a novella that has a lot of suspense to it.  Definitely set the story up between Ben and Isla.

Isla is taking over the campground for her Uncle who is going to take care of her ailing Aunt. She has a passion for photography which just might get her into trouble.

Ben is trying to move onto the next chapter in his life but he keeps getting dragged back.  The first time he sees Isla he knows there is something special about her but in his current line of work the best thing to do is push her away.  But Isla is very good at being in the wrong place at the wrong time.  Ben must work hard at achieving his goals and keeping her safe.

Shutter speed sets this up to be a thrilling series.  I look forward to the next chapter in Ben and Isla’s story.

Undiscovered (Amoveo Rising #1)

By Sara Humphreys

Synopsis

He’s the man of her dreams
A long time ago, Zander Lorens was cursed to walk the earth stripped of his Dragon Clan powers. Every night, trapped in a recurring nightmare, Zander relives his darkest moment. He can hardly believe it when the dream changes and a beautiful young woman appears. Zander believes she’s the key to ending his torment. Finding her in the real world is one thing, but how will he convince her of who-and what-she really is?

She’s the end to his nightmare
Rena McHale uses her unique sensitivity as a private investigator, touting herself as a “human divining rod” and finder of the lost. By day she struggles with sensory overload, and by night her sleep is haunted by a fiery dragon shifter. Nothing in her life makes sense, until the man from her dreams shows up at her door with a proposition…

Review

Undiscovered is a story of guilt, family and love.  It also explores relationships on many levels. Brothers, girlfriends, adoptive parents and lovers.  Plus finding out that dragons still exist.

Zander and Zed are twins that are dragon shifters.  They are cursed.  Zander stuck in human form and Zed trapped in hibernation as a dragon.  This curse happened all over a girl that the brothers were fighting over.  Zander will do anything to free Zed, even sacrifice his own happiness. He believes that if he can get Rena, Zed’s mate, to him that the curse will be broken. The only problem is Rena doesn’t know anything of his world and definitely doesn’t subscribe to being anyone’s mate.

Rena is an independent soul.  She was on the streets when she was found by Vito, who would become a kind of adoptive parent to her.  Rena knew she was special because she could sense things through touch.  Even though she knew that Zander was different and was pushing her away for reasons she couldn’t understand, she couldn’t help but want him.

As they made their way across the country to help his brother, their bonds deepen.  Zander must make a decision between the love that he feels for Rena and for his brother.

Fans of the Amoveo series will love Undiscovered.  It has all the elements that makes that series so good.  We get to revisit the characters of that series in this book which is a nice treat. This novel sets this new journey for the dragon shifters up.  They aren’t necessarily part of the Amoveo but they have the same qualities that made the Amoveo special.

Sentinel’s Kiss (Sentinels of Babylon #2)

By Jamie K Schmidt

Synopsis

A fiercely protective bad boy. An innocent reporter in serious trouble. They shouldn’t work, but after he throws her onto his bike, there’s no going back.

If Josh Lehman learned one thing as a Green Beret, it’s patience. Josh founded the Sentinels of Babylon because he was sick and tired of watching scumbags cheat the system—scumbags like the man who murdered his sister. Of course, if Josh’s sniper rifle was linked to the death of his ex-brother-in-law, that might be a problem. The bigger problem is the nosy reporter who’s this close to exposing the club. Josh has to find a way to keep her hot mouth from talking . . . but he’ll be damned if he lets someone take her from him. Not on his watch.

Ashley Carver thought she’d do anything for a scoop. That was before her latest story leads to multiple attempts on her life. Ashley’s been investigating a homicide that has gone unsolved for five years when she uncovers evidence tying the vigilantes of the Sentinels of Babylon to a revenge killing. Now she’s in their crosshairs. But after Josh defies all notions of club loyalty to come to Ashley’s aid, soon they’re burning up the sheets—and taking on the world.

Review

Sentinel’s of Babylon or SOBs are a vigilante group that right wrongs that were dismissed by the legal system.   In Sentinel’s Kiss they are righting the murder of Sentinel’s sister, Sarah.  They know who killed her and are ready to act but they find out a reporter has come across new information. They decide there is more to this act of violence than mets the eye and must follow the clues.

Sentinel, or Josh, is a military man who is about to end his brother-in-laws life.  Josh knows that he killed his sister and her unborn child.  The SOB’s have done all their research and they are ready to complete this mission.  But right as they were ready to take the shot, Josh notices that Ashley was there to get an interview.  Josh knew that there was more to this story that he would have to track down.

Ashley Carver is a reporter always after to a good story no matter if her life is in danger or not. She is a daredevil with a solid heart.  Ashley is on the side of the facts. She isn’t looking for a long term relationship with Josh but they have instant chemistry.  There is something about Josh that helps calm her life.  She hasn’t had an easy go of it and deserves to start the next chapter of her life.

Sentinel’s Kiss has a good mystery to it.  Sarah’s murder leads to something deeper and ends up with a twist at the end.  Things aren’t always what they seem.  I loved all of the SOB’s.  I think that they all have an interesting story to tell.

Steel

By Chiah Wilder

Steel

Synopsis

A fierce and feared warrior. His name is Steel, and he’s President of the Night Rebels MC. Part Navajo, part Irish, Steel is a respected leader of his brotherhood. With his tatted muscular body, ebony hair, and green eyes, he is a magnet to women. Never turning away a sexy body, he indulges in casual sex, but nothing more.

For him, defending his brotherhood and protecting his teenage daughter are foremost. Falling in love and being in a long term relationship don’t even make it on his list. He gave his heart to a woman when he was young and weak, but now he’s strong and has no room in his heart for love.

Then he meets his daughter’s social worker. His attraction to her is intense. Desire flares through him, and he’s drawn to her in a way that angers him. He doesn’t have time for a woman, but he can’t get the feisty, spirited caseworker out of his mind.
He wants to run his callused fingers through her hair.

He wants to crush his mouth to hers

He wants to devour her.

But she resists him. No woman has ever resisted him.

When he looks into her eyes, he sees the depths of sorrow and a spark of passion. She’s touched him. He’s never wanted a woman as much as he wants her.
And he always gets what he wants…no matter what.

From the moment Breanna Quine laid eyes on the rugged biker, her body betrayed her. And when she spotted the outlaw’s MC patch on his leather jacket, her blood turned to ice.

Hating bikers since her father gave up his family for the brotherhood, Breanna swore to never be around them again. Then the captivating Night Rebels President’s blazing, green-eyed gaze catches hers, and she is drawn to him like a moth is to fire.

But she can’t let herself fall for him, no matter how much her body buzzes whenever she is near him. As hard as she tries to fight her attraction to the dark, dangerous man, her resistance is weakening. Then when she sees his tenderness toward his daughter, it melts her heart. She has to keep reminding herself that he’s not only a biker, but he’s the worst kind—an outlaw.

Steel has his hands full trying to figure out who is supplying drugs to the teens of Alina, Colorado. Time is running out for him as danger comes knocking at his door threatening to destroy his family and the woman whom he has vowed to make his own.

Can two independent people put their past behind them in order to come together? Will they fight for love against the shadows and the danger that lurks all around them, threatening to destroy them forever?

Review

Steel is a fast paced mystery MC story with some romance but it left me wanting more from these two main characters in the romantic emotional sense.  I actually would have enjoyed this more without the storyline of her brother as I felt both of the two main characters had so much going on in their lives that the romantic journey took second place.

Breanna and Steel’s chemistry I did not feel until around the 30% mark as I felt there were many storylines lines for characters introduced into the book.

The mystery of the Candyman was well done in that for one I did not guess him until the big reveal and that I had thought two other characters were the Candyman so that was well hidden.

I really despised Breanna’s brother and Steel’s daughters storyline was incredibly sad and a tough journey At times.

The angle of the reservation was different but I did feel at times the story did not flow and I admit to reading over some of the mc drama as I wanted to get back to the romance of Steel and Breanna’s.

Two moments that did not flow for me was the altercation between Steel and Breanna’s when he pushed her down through her front door and then also their declaration of love, I did not feel it at that time. When her brother ransacked her house and there was no follow up perhaps with Steel understanding the drama she was dealing with her brother would have perhaps combined their stories of drama and drugs.

To me these two characters had such dramatic personal stories with so much heartache that their love story came in second but the ending does give them a HEA.

Shaken, Not Stirred (Last Call # 5)

By Sawyer Bennett

br-0202-shaken-not-stirred

Synopsis

She swore she would never fall to any man.
He took one look at her and vowed to bring her down.

Casey Markham is a man-eater in a rut. Swearing off relationships may keep her heart safe, but she’s beginning to question if her casual flings will ever leave her satisfied. She’s wondering if it’s finally time to let go of the past and stop letting history control her future.

Bad boy biker, Tenn Jennings can’t get Casey off his mind. A chance encounter with the beautiful blond has left its mark, and now he’s determined to prove her wrong about everything she thought she knew about men.

It’s safe to say… Casey Markham has met her match.

Review

SHAKEN, NOT STIRRED is the fifth and final book in the Last Call series and is about Casey (Hunter and Brody’s little sister) and Tenn (a new arrival in town).

After having her heart broken at the tender age of eighteen, Casey has sworn of relationships.  She avoids good, kind and honest men because those types have the potential to thaw the ice around her heart.  Instead, she sleeps with men exactly like her first boyfriend, because when she disposes of them and makes them feel worthless, she doesn’t feel worthless herself.  I liked her enough, but at times I found her a little immature and I didn’t like it when she played games, especially with Tenn.

I really liked Tenn.  He seemed like a cool and easygoing guy and I loved how much he loved his daughter, willing to move across the country to be closer to her.  However, for a man who hates his ex-wife because of the mind games she plays, I was surprised that he didn’t seem to have a problem with Casey’s games and that he would play them himself at times.

SHAKEN, NOT STIRRED is told in dual POVs and while it’s part of a series, it can be read as a stand-alone.  I thought I recognised Tenn’s name, but it wasn’t until he talked about being a cowboy that I realised he’s Woolf’s brother from The Wicked Horse series, which is a spin-off of this series.  Yes, I read the series out of order.  It also took me a while to realise that Kyle (Andrea’s brother) is the same Kyle from WICKED BOND, the undercover ATF agent that was killed.  Spoiler alert:  He wasn’t really killed, because his own book, FINDING KYLE, came out last month.

Acer (No Prisoners MC #3)

By Lilly Atlas

Synopsis

After one unforgettable night with a dangerous outlaw, Fia knows she must limit contact with the kind of man who could never fit in her wealthy circle. Unfortunately, she can’t keep their brief but passionate encounter far from her thoughts. When she seeks him out for reasons unrelated to their chemistry, the worst happens, and Fia is attacked by a madman. With her life turned upside down, she seeks help from the one person she can’t get out of her mind.

Betrayed by someone he should have been able to trust above all, Acer spends the next two decades of his life avoiding entanglements that have any chance of ending with a knife in his back. The MC life provides a safe way to have personal connections and loyalty due to its simple rule: betray the club and punishment will be severe. Still, he keeps a large part of himself locked away inside, hidden even from his MC brothers. When the woman who’s been messing with his head for months reappears in his life needing sanctuary, Acer jumps to her aid. He’s committed to help her reclaim her life, but determined to keep her at arms-length in the process.

As Acer and Fia fight their growing feelings, his club is in danger from a new and different kind of enemy. Will his refusal to put his full trust in anyone, including the woman he’s falling for, end up destroying more than betrayal ever could?

Review

Acer and Fia’s journey is heart breaking but exciting, humorous, emotional, dominating and highly erotic.  The suspense story that surrounds their romance journey keeps you guessing and also Fia’s highly traumatic event at the start sets you up for an emotional and often times thought provoking moments. I devoured her scenes of recovery and battling her way back to happiness and love. I was highly distressed by her encounter after the visit to the Gym and honestly did not think she would recover.  What a strong woman she was and the way she was written in the story made me love her and want her to find peace again.

Acer was a hard character for me to get attached to until the end when he finally opened up but he was still the same man I wanted to know more about from Jester (No Prisoners #2).

I really enjoyed seeing Jester and Emily again, I loved them as a couple and enjoyed seeing their relationship continue to develop and move to the next level.

I do hope we get Lucky’s story as he was one character who provided light relief at times when Fia was struggling with her trauma.  The way Lucky provided another source of comfort and protection for Fia helped me find some happiness.
