Review

I’ll start by saying that I’ve read quite a few books from C.A. Harms and have enjoyed them very much, so it pains me to say that I didn’t enjoy UNCONTROLLABLE.  Having read the previous two books in The Key West series just in the past five months, I was a little concerned when I realised I couldn’t remember Kade or Avery.

Kade is haunted by the death of his high school girlfriend, Jenna, who died in a car accident after having an argument with him.  He’s spent the years since the accident weighed down by anger, grief and guilt, using alcohol to numb his emotions.  He and Avery have been flirting with each other for a year when he learns of Avery’s connection to Jenna’s death.  This, along with an emotionless sexual encounter with her, sends him spiralling again.  Avery stands up for herself and I loved that she didn’t back down until she was certain Kade was in a better emotional state.

From memory, I wouldn’t class the previous two books in this series as novellas, but I would class UNCONTROLLABLE as one as it only took two hours to finish.  The story itself moved way too fast and I felt no connection between Kade and Avery at all.  I felt like I got mental whiplash from how fast the story moved and from how quickly the characters’ emotions did complete 180s.  While I don’t really expect mystery or intrigue with this kind of story, I was a little disappointed that apart from one event, everything else that happened I could see coming a mile away.

UNCONTROLLABLE is told in dual POVs and we got a sneak peak at Jude’s story, which I will say sounds really interesting.  So while I didn’t like this story, I’m not going to let one bad apple ruin the bunch and I will continue with the series.
