Well of course, it just has to be the same actress I screwed over only months before. But she doesn’t need to know about that one tiny detail, does she? All that matters is getting her to agree to do the film and I’ll do whatever it takes. We can leave the past, in the past, right?

I thought my charm would win her over. Never would I have been prepared for the terms she laid out on the table.

Review

I quite enjoyed THE MANNY, so much so that I already have the second book in the series, DOGGIE STYLE, ready to go on my Kindle.

I am in way over my head. Changing my first diaper is one thing. Changing my first diaper full of shit and dealing with a biological disaster is another entirely.

I liked Vance, who was really a good guy. Did he screw Layla out of a job because he was too busy thinking with his dick? Well, yeah, but he knows that was wrong and hates that he did it. Did Karma pay him back? Yep, and rightly so. For a man intent on staying a bachelor, he took to Layla’s kids pretty damn well. I really enjoyed the scenes where he was interacting with them, because they were all really sweet with just the right amount of humor thrown in.

“But right now I have to go check to make sure a four-year-old little boy isn’t cooking meth or something in his bedroom. It’s too quiet in there.”

Layla was a very easy character to like. She’s a single mother to two kids, and her ex-husband is more interested in sleeping around and maintaining his career than being a responsible and helpful parent. Because of all the people in her life that have let her down, placing her trust in someone is a big deal, so you really felt her devastation and anger when she found out the secret Vance was keeping from her. That anger was good for her though, because it gave her the strength to stand up to both Vance and her ex, and it was good.

“I’m at a crossroads with my career and I need people who will help me push my self-doubt to the side and who will believe in me. I thought you were one of those people, but it turns out you didn’t believe in me either.”

I only have two complaints with this story, but I consider them to be fairly minor. The conflict was predictable right from the start, and I thought the Kimmel scene was a little cheesy.

THE MANNY is told in dual POVs and is the first book in the Dirty Truth trilogy. Vance’s two best friends, Jagger and Leo, will get their own books and all three can be read as stand-alones. THE MANNY comes with a lovely HEA for Vance and Layla, and I hope we see more of them in the next two books, because I want to know if Vance’s film is a huge success.

Sure, he’s tall, dark, and handsome. And yes, he has the best ass I’ve ever seen, and I mean ever seen quite literally. You see he mooned me at last year’s Fourth of July barbecue because, like I said, he’s a jerk.

He always has to be the life of the party.
He’s also arrogant.
Imposing.
Rich.
And a playboy.
I’d even go as far as to say he’s a manwhore.

Yet somehow before I know it, this manwhore and I are co-parenting. Living under the same roof. Eating meals together and yes, talking.

Don’t look at me like that—it’s not like I had a choice. Even though I knew every minute would be hell, I had to say yes.

But after two weeks what I didn’t expect is that I’d been wrong about him.
That under his smart-ass exterior, he’s quite charming.
That his arrogance is actually confidence.
And that the sight of his naked body would do really bad things to me.

So yes, I’ve misjudged him. And yes, I like him. Really like him. Although there are times I still think he’s a jerk…I now think he’s a sexy jerk.

And I want more of him.

The question is—does he want more of me?

Review

I’ve been struggling for days with what to rate SEXY JERK, and in the end I’ve decided to give it just 2❤️, because days after finishing the book, all I can think about are the issues I had with this story.

Character wise, I liked Nick, but I didn’t like Tess.  She was irrational and very easy to anger and upset.  Tess has hated Nick since the first time they met because he was a jerk, which makes no sense because we learn about their first meeting, and Nick was really nice.  He asked if he could buy her a drink, she said yes, he went to get it, then her boyfriend comes over and takes her away.  But somehow he’s a jerk?  Personally, I think she’s a bitch for accepting a drink from another man when she has a boyfriend.

Speaking of jerk, I get that Nick is supposed to be a jerk (he’s not), but I got annoyed at how many times he was called one throughout this story.  At my count, he was called a jerk twenty-two times.

There are two threesome scenes that didn’t work for me, and I’m wondering if they were added purely to increase the kink factor.  The first scene was when Tess reminisces about her first sexual experience, which was with twin brothers when she was just seventeen.  That scene came out of nowhere and really threw the story off.  It seemed to make sense a few chapters later when Tess thinks to herself that Nick brings out her kinky side, a side she’s been suppressing since her time with the twins.  The second scene involved their friends: Fiona, Ethan and Jace.  Fiona and Ethan are happily married with a child, but one day they just decide they want to bring Jace into their bed.  Why?  Because he and Ethan used to share women in college, and since Ethan’s wife died, he’s been lonely and they don’t want him to feel lonely anymore.  Again, it came out of nowhere, did not fit with the story and I thought it was weird and icky.

I like sex with my romance, but there was a lot of sex in this story.  A lot.  I started skimming through them because I had reached my limit and just wanted to get back to the story.  Even the epilogue had a sex scene that spanned several pages.

There’s a suspense element that involved Nick’s biggest real estate rival, which I thought was promising.  But after watching the suspense build throughout the story, it was anticlimactic to see it quickly tidied up in the epilogue.  There was even another person close to Nick who was involved, but you never hear about him again once Nick realizes what the “double agent” has been doing.  So even though the rival issue was resolved, it had an unfinished feel to it.  Almost like the author hit a wall and just decided to throw on the ending.

SEXY JERK is told in dual POVs and does come with a HEA for Nick and Tess.  While I didn’t enjoy this book, I would give this author another go, but I won’t be continuing on with this series.

FORBIDDEN DESIRE is the third book in the Lee County Wolves series, and while the last Foster brother has now been mated off, the series has been left open for more books.  More wolves have been brought into the pack for protection, and their alpha—Garrett—has come to a decision that will greatly affect the pack.  I am interested in seeing where the author will go from here.

I liked Marcus, but Roxy was definitely the stand-out character.  Garrett rescued her from her abusive husband, and she’s been living in hiding with the pack ever since.  She’s been using that time well; building up her confidence and breaking free from the conditioning her husband instilled in her.

We got to see the previous two couples, but more of Garrett and Janna because Janna’s pregnant and Garrett’s still being challenged for his alpha position.  Hunter was his usual playful self and really brought in the humor.

“Why don’t you claim her, bro?”
“Because she’s still married.”
“Okay, well let’s kill the son of a bitch and then she won’t be married anymore. Easy fix.”

Unfortunately, MICHAEL: A SCROOGED CHRISTMAS was a DNF for me at the 18% mark.  I usually try to last a little longer than that, but I just couldn’t continue on when a flashback scene appeared out of nowhere and had no connection to the scene I was reading.  At least, I think it was a flashback scene.  I honestly can’t be certain.  It appeared so randomly and without notice that I thought I’d missed an entire page, so I went back two pages and re-read everything, but the result was still the same: great confusion about what I was reading.  So I made the decision to stop reading and move on to another book.  I researched the author’s work and found out that the two people Michael was angry at⏤Grayson and Ella⏤had their own story already, and I wonder if the flashback would have made more sense if I had read that other book first.

I’ve been wondering how to rate STRIP ME BARE for a few days now, and in the end I decided to give it 3❤️, because while I liked the story and its characters, there were some things I didn’t like.

I’ll start with Ryan and Alana, who I did like and I thought they fit as a couple.  What I didn’t like about Ryan was how he sacrificed his freedom for someone who didn’t deserve it the first time, let alone a second time.  What I didn’t like about Alana was how she folded to her father’s demands because she wanted his money to pay for her education and lifestyle.  It made her seem like she was a doormat and a user.  I also didn’t like that Alana never slept with anyone else in the five years they were apart, but of course Ryan had no problem sleeping with dozens of women while still being in love with Alana.

Moving on to the story, it took me a while to get into it because it was a little slow.  So slow that I considered not finish it.  But I’m very glad I kept with it, because it did pick up towards the end and became a more enjoyable read.  Despite being slow, there’s quite a bit happening throughout the story, and as I got closer to the end, I thought for sure the author was going to leave a few of these things unresolved.  So colour me pleasantly surprised when she tidied everything up, and did so in believable ways.

One other issue I had with the story were the skips in time; the story takes place over several years, with the epilogue taking place another six years later.  I don’t think the gaps took away anything from the story, rather my frustration stemmed from not knowing that time had elapsed because it wasn’t a header at the beginning of the chapter.  I’d get this sense that something wasn’t right, that I felt like I was missing something, and it would be several paragraphs into a chapter that Alana would say or think about how much time had passed.

I know I seem to have only listed the bad stuff, and it may sound like I didn’t enjoy STRIP ME BARE, but I did.  It comes with a lovely HEA that brings the story together and left me feeling very happy.  It is told only in Alana’s POV and is a stand-alone.

Crank (The Gibson Boys # 1)

With the huge amount of glowing reviews CRANK gets on Amazon and Goodreads, I had high hopes for this one.  Sadly, I’m clearly in the minority because no matter how hard I tried, I could not get into this book.  It took me three days to finish and, even though I only finished reading the day before writing this review, I cannot remember anything at all about the characters or the story.  All I remember is how I felt reading it, which was a combination of frustration and boredom.

Referring to the very few notes I took, I wasn’t a fan of how rudely Walker treated Sienna simply because he was attracted to her when he didn’t want to be.  I also wasn’t a fan of how almost all the men in this story talked about and treated women, with the worst being when one of Walker’s brothers talks about having a girl after his brother is done with her.  If they were supposed to come off as humorous playboys, they missed the mark with me.  I can’t say anything about Sienna because I didn’t take any notes about her at all.

I really wanted to like this book; the cover is cute and the blurb sounds really good, but this story did nothing for me.  In the three years I’ve been reviewing, I’ve only given eleven books a 1❤️ review, but CRANK becomes my third this month alone.  This has me wondering if maybe it’s really a case of “It’s not you, it’s me.”  I’ll let you be the judge.

CREEP is another great addition to the Karma Inc. series, though I can’t say too much about it, because this series is connected and I’m trying not to give away any spoilers.  But I’m very glad my suspicions about Drake were confirmed.  Yes, we finally find out what Drake is, and it definitely makes things more interesting.  In this story, there was no further investigation into Cassie’s murder, but I think we’ll get a lot of information in the next book, given where her next case is taking her.

CREEP is told only in Cassie’s POV and ends in a cliffhanger of sorts.  Each book in this series is connected and cannot be read as stand-alones.  The next book in the series is CROOK, and though I don’t know when it’s coming out, I can’t wait to read it.

FORBIDDEN SEDUCTION is the second book in the Lee County Wolves series, and it’s been over two years since I read the first book, FORBIDDEN HUNGER.  Because of that, I wondered if I’d have a problem following on from the first story, and I did, but not for that reason.  I hit a few trouble spots because some characters and events introduced and talked about in this book relate to a different series.  Because of that, I did feel like I was missing something, but it didn’t really affect my enjoyment of the story.

I liked Hunter, but his treatment of Emily when they were younger meant he had a lot to apologize for, and I don’t think he apologized enough.  That being said, I did feel that he was truly regretful for how he treated her and will spend the rest of his life making it up to her.

I loved Emily.  She was very sweet and she’d make sacrifices for those who deserved it, even if it came at her expense.  Her sister was a vile human being, and as much as I loved that Emily did stand up to her most of the time, there were some times that she didn’t and during those times, she did come across as a bit of a doormat.  If anyone deserved to be bitch-slapped, it was her sister.  But when she confronted Hunter about how he hurt her in high school, she was absolutely magnificent.

“Never in a million years did I think you or anyone else for that matter would have to be threatened to take me out. I’m actually a pretty nice person who’s fun to be around.”

FORBIDDEN SEDUCTION is told in dual POVs and while it’s part of a series, it can be read as a stand-alone.  Although, as I said above, it is connected to another series and if you haven’t read that other series, you might feel a little lost a few times throughout this story.  It’s a fairly quick read and a good way to spend a few spare hours, and I already have the third book waiting on my Kindle.

Review

PUCK LOVE is the first book I’ve read from Carmen Jenner, and overall I found it an enjoyable read.

“Van, what happened to my panties?”
“I took one look at them and they just disintegrated into thin air. That happens quite a bit when I’m around.”

I liked Van.  Yes, he could sometimes be a bit of a pig, especially to Stella before they started sleeping together, and he came on to her pretty damn strong, but I did find humour in some of his comments.  I loved watching him with his little brother, Emmett, who has Downs Syndrome and who he clearly loved very much and would do anything for.  I know there are a few readers who hated him because he “cheated”, but since he and Stella were broken up at the time and he put a stop to it very quickly, I don’t consider what he did cheating, so I’m not going to hold that one scene against him.

I liked Stella, but I don’t really have much to say about her other than she suffered from severe panic attacks when performing, but was suddenly cured after starting a relationship with Van.  This was a woman who was questioning her entire career and life choices, but when the time came to return said career, she did so very easily and was suddenly loving it.  I guess I just don’t understand how getting a boyfriend can change how you feel about your job.

I thought PUCK LOVE was written well.  I didn’t notice any spelling or grammar mistakes, or any inconsistencies, and it did hold my attention pretty well.  That being said, there were a few things that slightly bothered me.  We never found out how the paparazzi discovered where Stella was hiding.  The first half (ish) of the story takes place in the span of a few weeks, but after that the story takes huge skips in time, ranging from one month to four months.  After feeling their connection build in those first few weeks, it was hard trying to feel that connection continue when they were apart for months at a time.  Lastly, Van and Stella had a huge conflict around the middle of the story, so I thought it was odd to add another conflict at the 90% mark, especially when it was just a misunderstanding and was resolved within a couple of pages.  It felt a bit pointless to me.

PUCK LOVE is told in dual POVs and is currently a stand-alone.  However, that could change as Van’s friend and Stella’s manager seemed to have a little something going on in this story, but in regards to Van and Stella, they got their HEA.

With the great ratings and reviews CALICO has on both Amazon and Goodreads, as well as how interesting the blurb sounds, I thought this was going to be a slam dunk of a great read for me.  Sadly, it was not. The first and last 20% of the story grabbed me, but the 60% in the middle was, for lack of a better word, boring.  It took me a few days to finish and there were several times I considered not finishing it at all, which was really disappointing.

I noticed several spelling mistakes, incorrect word usage and missing words throughout the story, which I’m surprised haven’t been fixed since it was published eighteen months ago.

What Callan and Coralie have been through and endured, especially Coralie, is truly awful, but apart from one flashback scene towards the end, I didn’t experience the strong emotions I was expecting to with this kind of story.  Whether that’s because I was bored or because of the storytelling, I honestly can’t say.

I couldn’t wrap my head around the fact that at least two adults knew Coralie’s father was beating her, but neither went to the police to report it.  Neither of them were willing to help a teenage girl get out of a terrible situation, especially Friday, a mother figure who was clearly very fond of Coralie.

Finally, the second time they were intimate—in the present—had the potential to be a truly beautiful scene, but it changed so quickly I felt like I had whiplash.  One minute they’re loving and emotional and declaring their feelings, and in the next, Callan is asking Coralie if she can handle a good fucking before taking photos of her in sexual poses.  Then he starts telling her about all the women he’s had sex with and how they don’t compare to her.  I think it was supposed to be a romantic gesture on Callan’s part, and if that is the case, it missed the mark spectacularly.

CALICO is told in dual POVs and in both past and present time.  It is a stand-alone and it does come with a HEA for Callan and Coralie.  It contains scenes of physical abuse, suicide and bulimia that may be triggers for some readers.
