embrace the dawning

Synopsis

Kayci Pierce possesses strength, endurance, and accelerated healing that set her apart from normal humans—traits she’s never understood and kept hidden since childhood. She feels disconnected from the seemingly normal world around her—until she’s attacked by a creature she didn’t know exists and then rescued by a stranger she can’t forget. Dreams of the attractive, dangerous man haunt her and lead her into a world she was born for. Adrian Spade spends most of his solitary nights hunting rogue vampires for the Covenant, until an undeniable attraction leads him to reveal his vampire identity and risk his life by saving Kayci’s. Tempted by her mysterious nature, Adrian finds himself drawn to Kayci and becomes her protector while she discovers her heritage and what it means to be a half-breed vampire sorceress. Kayci’s relationship with Adrian brings her as much passion as it does danger. Now with a vampire revolution beginning and a romantic connection to a full-blood vampire, Kayci must work with Adrian to survive surrounding threats. As Kayci tries to make sense of an unfamiliar world, she’s forced to choose between the life she’s always known and her vampire birthright.

Review

Embrace the Dawning is the story of a young women that discovers who she really is and begins her journey into a new world that she never knew existed.   This story is an emotional ride from beginning to end.

Kayci has known she was different.  She heals fast and is stronger than most humans.  It is not until she is attacked by a rogue vampire that she truly starts learning who and what she is. Kayci is extremely relatable.  From her mistrust of Adrian right after her attack to learning she is a half-breed, she wears her heart on her sleeve.

Adrian, Kayci’s love interest, has found his match.  He has known this since he found her (a couple of weeks before her attack).  His only thoughts are to protect her, especially from his own people.  He knows what his people will do when they find out about her existence.  He is completely devoted to Kayci and I adore this about him.  I really like their relationship.  He helps to guide her with her vampire side.  He seems to understand the amount of space she needs to navigate this different world she has woken up in.

Kayci has a great friend in Elise.  They grew up together and have a bond that is stronger than most families.  She seems to be an excellent  confidant.  This part of the story was written really well because their friendship wasn’t one-sided.  They both have their own lives and they both share their ups and downs with each other.  It kept the story grounded for me.

Kayci also found new allies on her journey into this new world.  She has many obstacles and people that would like to destroy her.  I found it hard to put this book down once I started it. Even in the last part of the book when you think that everything has been resolved and the story is being wrapped up Betty Shreffler throws another twist that sets up the second book perfectly.  I can’t wait to see how this story is continued.
