Synopsis
The price of survival…
Gabriel Miller swept into my life like a storm. He tore down my father with cold retribution, leaving him penniless in a hospital bed. I quit my private all-girl’s college to take care of the only family I have left.
There’s one way to save our house, one thing I have left of value.
My virginity.
A forbidden auction…
Gabriel appears at every turn. He seems to take pleasure in watching me fall. Other times he’s the only kindness in a brutal underworld.
Except he’s playing a deeper game than I know. Every move brings us together, every secret rips us apart. And when the final piece is played, only one of us can be left standing.
THE PAWN is a full-length contemporary novel from New York Times bestselling author Skye Warren about revenge and seduction in the game of love.
Review
The Pawn is part of a series, you will be left with questions at the end of this story, I am so glad we only have to wait until January for The Knight – you have been warned.
I was deflated upon finishing as I was not ready to leave Gabriel and Avery. The last word of the book – perfect and what an ending – so many questions.
Will Avery make her move and jump ahead in The Knight? I cannot wait to see her surprise move.
Gabriel is the devil and Avery is goodness and perhaps a bit naive especially when it comes to her father. When Gabriel takes Avery in the physical sense it is raw and honest however upon reflection I have some inner thoughts on what could happen to Avery going forward – I hope I am right.
The whole auction scene had my stomach turning and her awful Uncle Landon made my skin crawl.
The Pawn flows perfectly, we are given moments of devastation and turmoil and I love the cover. The Pawn is not a love story however I can feel the foundations building and for a Queen to make her move in more ways than one to capture the King.
The supporting characters of Justin and Harper gave another layer to Avery to help me understand her upbringing and her innocence.
I am left with many questions that I want answers to, is the Den playing another part to this story, why the photos?, who was the intruder, is Uncle Landon going to try and claim again, where is Justin and has Gabriel left Avery with a gift?
Quote: I flinch because I know exactly what I am to him It’s my role in this game: to fall when the time is right, to protect the king until I’ve run out of time. To sacrifice myself at the perfect turn.
