Synopsis
I’m Shimmer, a blue dragon shifter. Thanks to a mistake, I was exiled from the Dragon Reaches and sentenced to work for gorgeous, exasperating Alex Radcliffe, a vampire who owns the Fly by Night Magical Investigations Agency. Every time I turn around, somebody’s trying to kill us. But you know what they say: All’s fair in love and bounty hunting…
A serial killer is stalking the elderly Fae of Seattle, draining their bank accounts before brutally murdering them. When Chase Johnson asks for our help, Alex and I discover that the sociopath is also a shifter—able to change shape to match his victim’s deepest desires. Our friend and colleague Bette volunteers to act as bait, but the plan goes dangerously awry. Now, unless we find her first, she’s about to face her worst nightmare.
Review
Shimmer is a socially awkward blue dragon. Exiled from Dragon Reaches and given to Alex to watch over her. She started working for his Fly by Night Magical Investigations Agency. She seems to have found her place. The agency is extremely busy and always has a case going on. Chase, the detective that runs the Faerie-Human Crime Scene Investigation Unit, has asked them to help with another case which could kill one of the team.
I had not read the previous book before this one so the beginning was a little confusing at first, but I quickly settle into the book. I found reading this book was addictive because there was always something going on. This novel was really about Shimmer finding her place on Earthside after a rough childhood of being given up and left as an orphan. There are a lot of different magical beings here and they each have their own abilities that Shimmer had to figure out in order to interact with them.
I really liked her friends. She has a great group surrounding her. First is her boyfriend Alex, a vampire. He has thrown her for a loop by asking her to be exclusive. It was interesting reading how she was reasoning this out. Especially since he has a psycho ex-girlfriend named Glenda. Then she has her roommate Chai, who is really like a bother to her. Then she has Bette, Ralph and Tonya who each were having drama of their own to deal with, which then had a role in shaping Shimmer’s new reality.
Quote: “Tonya gave me a sideways look. ‘I know you’re grumpy, and I know it’s because you’re scared for Bette and you’re mad at Glenda. But sometimes, shit just happens. It’s part of living in the human world. Don’t dragons have the same problems?'”
