Scars

By Jaimie Roberts

Synopsis

I had the perfect school, the perfect friends—the perfect life …
At least, that’s what I thought.
But you changed all that.
You are always there … Always watching … Always waiting in the shadows. You send me flowers and messages. You stalk me, trace my every movement…
Until that one day, in a silly game of Seven Minutes in Heaven, when I finally get to feel you—have a taste of you …
It left me wanting more.
One catastrophic day, my wish is granted.
Just past my eighteenth birthday, tragedy strikes and I watch my family die before my eyes.
You are there. You rescue me. You choose my life over my older sister’s, and I hate you for that. I hate you for taking me and imprisoning me. You say it’s for my sake, but I know it’s for your own. You make me see that my life could be much worse without you in it…
You make me see true darkness.
It is in that darkness you make me desperate for your presence, your touch, your caress. You make me need you… You make it impossible for me to live without you… And then, eventually…
You make me fall in love with you.

Secrets will always wound the ones twisted within their web of lies… But the ones I’m tangled in … are deadly.

WARNING: Although this book (overall) is not a dark read, one chapter is an exception, and contains the following triggers: childhood sexual/emotional abuse with some intensity in one particular scene.

Review

Scars is my third book by this author, it is not my favourite as it started dark and then turned sweet however I did enjoy the ending to a point.  I was totally floored by the turn of events with the main characters, I did not see or figure out the surprises or the twist in the story line so well done to the author.  I am though unhappy with the one unresolved secret for Lily and so for me the story is not finished.  I find in the author’s notes a story will be released on Christine that will also feature an update for “J” and Lily.

I love the cover of this, it is definitely “J” to a big “T”.

The main thing I did not like with this story was the way it turned rather sweet and I did feel we got dragged down with all the teenage drama.  I also felt the ending was rushed, it took us forever to get back to that room where we started this story in and I actually wanted to see Lily declare her secret to “J” and to see perhaps how they move forward, it just felt unresolved to me.

Scars has some pretty horrific flashbacks to what happens with “J” and Charlotte, my god what he and his sister go through, I can totally understand wanting revenge, it is a hard few chapters to read.

Scars is an enjoyable story, it was just different to what I expected from the author after reading Deviant and Redemption which I absolutely loved – definitely not as dark and dirty.

Freeze Frame: A SNAPshot Novel

By Freya Barker and KT Dove

Synopsis

A new career, a new place, and a new man—you’d think after the rough year she’s had, Isla has finally found her stride. Of course it’s never that simple. Some dreams she is building, some dreams are taken away before they have a chance to form. But she never imagined that the one thing she’s worked so hard to realize, could be the cause it all breaks apart.

Ben doesn’t miss his assignments, his life of deceit, or his unsavory associations—but they appear to miss him. Just as he’s beginning to think perhaps there’s redemption for him after all, his dark past casts a long shadow.—and not just on him, but on the woman who made him believe.

Review

Freeze Frame picks up right where Shutter Speed leaves off.  Ben and Isla have amazing chemistry with each other.  They have so much that has changed in their lives that it could tear apart a new relationship or could make them stronger.

I loved this couple in Shutter Speed but I wasn’t sure what direction Freya and KT were going to take them on.  Both Ben and Isla are navigating new lives together.  She has just moved to take over the camp and start a new career as a photographer.  Ben has left his job for good and is still trying to decide what he ultimately wants to do but has settled on helping Isla make something out of the campsite. Ben loves Isla and soon finds that making a life with her is what he wants and he will figure everything else out later.  But Ben has a past that he didn’t even know about that will come back to haunt them both.

I really love the strength that Isla has even when she is full of self doubt.  She was not going to let anyone hurt them or the people they loved. And I loved Ben, because even when he had his own doubts that Isla would stay, he was ready to give his full support to her. Both of their families added to the complexities of relationships. Ben’s sister and niece were great.  They also went through a lot and added to Ben’s strength of character.  Freeze Frame is a carefully crafted novel on a relationship that has to go through turmoil to get to the other side.

Review

Kiss Marry Kill is the story of two people who fell for each other at the wrong time in their lives. They had a chance at something special after four amazing days together but unfortunately reality stepped in and it was not meant to be.  Five years later, circumstances have given Megan and Jax another chance.

Jax is the head of a security company and Megan is a music star and the obsession of a stalker. Jax comes in and does everything in his power to make her safe.  But in the five years that they were apart they both changed.  Jax was changed by the war.  Megan was changed by Jax and learned to do what she was passionate about.

Megan has some great friends that help her on her journey.  Her friends in the band are amazing and bring a lighter feel to the story.  Her parents are also support system even if they don’t totally understand why she wants to go down this path.  Megan also has a serious problem, she has a stalker that has managed to invade her home and her sense of security.

Kiss Marry Kill is a sweet second change love story that had some thrilling parts in it.  I loved how they meet at the baseball game and spent 4 amazing days together.  I also felt that the way Jax had changed seemed appropriate for what he went through in the war.  But I did feel like the story started to loose energy about 40% of the way through and didn’t pick back up until nearly the end.  It does have a twist in it that I had guessed but it still made an interesting ending.

Into the Fire (A Night Prince Novel #4)

By Jeaniene Frost

Synopsis

For nearly six hundred years, Vlad Tepesh cared for nothing, so he had nothing to lose. His brutal reputation ensured that all but the most foolhardy stayed away. Now, falling in love with Leila has put him at the mercy of his passions. And one adversary has found a devastating way to use Vlad’s new bride against him.

A powerful spell links Leila to the necromancer Mircea. If he suffers or dies, so does she. Magic is forbidden to vampires, so Vlad and Leila enlist an unlikely guide as they search for a way to break the spell. But an ancient enemy lies in wait, capable of turning Vlad and Leila’s closest friends against them . . . and finally tearing the lovers apart forever.

Review

Into the Fire is the fourth and final book in the Night Prince series.  And just like all the other books in this series it did not disappoint.  Vlad and Leila have true passion for one another. There is only one thing that can used against Vlad and that is Leila.

Leila is bound by spell to Mircea.  Mircea has daddy issues that have festered over time. Anything that happens to Mircea happens to Leila and that makes for a dangerous situation for Vlad.  Mircea wants to make Vlad pay.  But just has Mircea has the upper hand, he has been taken and used against Vlad because of the spell that was cast on Leila.

Into the Fire is so good.  It finishes this series in a spectacular way.  Jeaniene Frost has brought these characters to life for me.  Mencheres, Marty, Maximus and Gretchen all made appearances in this book.  But Ian made a huge impression on me.  He put so much humour into every facet of this book.  One of the things that I loved about this book is that you really see the passion that Vlad has for Leila and that they truly love each other.  Leila was very quick to stand up for Vlad even when he didn’t need it.

Leila also stands up for herself.  And when Vlad starts to be unreasonable and makes decisions for her, she has it out with him.  One things I love about these books is that they have strong female characters.  They always match their male counter parts with strength of character.

This book makes me want to read the whole series over again.  I can’t wait for Jeaniene Frost’s next book!!!

Claimed by Magic (The Hunter Chronicles Book 3)

By Claire Marta

Synopsis

Broken hearted from Eric’s betrayal in Prague, Jasmine turns to her best friend to get her mind off everything she has lost.

Twitch takes her on a wild adventure in an attempt to cheer her up, but unbeknownst to either of them, danger lurks within the shadows of the techno mage’s magical homeland.

An ancient evil is rising.

No one is safe.
No one can be trusted.
Lines are drawn.
The battle to survive begins.

Review

Claimed by Magic is the third installment to the Hunter Chronicles and has taken this series to the next level for me.  New characters and new revelations are made.  Eric still pines for Jasmine and Jasmine is still broken hearted.  But we learn so much about them and Twitch.

Jasmine is jobless and is unsure of her next move.  She has a broken heart.  She also has another issue that she will have to face for some time to come thanks to Eric. Jasmine is tough and definitely not helpless.  She doesn’t even know what she is capable of yet.

Eric is facing a crisis of his own.  He hasn’t had feelings for a long time and now he is finding out that Jasmine has started to warm is frozen heart.  He is having trouble processing this so he tries to put distance between them.  In book three, Eric is forced to observe Jasmine and really see her for who she is and that makes him have even more feelings for her.

In Claimed by Magic, we get to know Twitch even better. Twitch takes Jasmine back home with him to Avalon. We see his world and the place he has in it. He is an outcast and feels awkward except around the people he loves most. In this installment, you get to know how Twitch became they way he is today.  We also learn who his is and what he’s capable of.

Avalon also becomes a character in this story.  There are many facets of life on this magical island.  It has a balance where all the different magical houses have equal power.  Someone wants to upset this balance and take control of the island for themselves which could erupt into a war which would bleed over into the non-magical world.

Claimed by Magic is another great installment to The Hunter Chronicles series.  Claire Marta has a wonderful way of making this magical world visual and modernizing old tales. There is so much that happens in this book, I can’t give away any more without giving away the revelations that are made throughout this story. This book was definitely one that I was looking forward to and it did not disappoint.  I love the fact that Jasmine is so strong and that Eric has to understand who she is. I look forward to the next adventure in The Hunter Chronicles.

Shutter speed: A Snapshot Novella

By Freya Barker

Synopsis

She likes picking up her camera because it allows her to see things through a different lens. Like when she lost her job recently and instead of focusing on what she’s forced to leave behind, she zooms in on the new options opening up in front of her. Or when a dangerous looking silver fox comes rolling up her path on a FatBoy, and her digital output shows a deep loneliness, matching her own, in his ice-blue eyes.
But when she’s working on making her dreams come true, she inadvertently captures something in her viewfinder she can’t un-see.

He wasn’t supposed to be here, but he can’t seem to escape his old life. Stuck in an old trailer in the mountains, he walks a fine line between ruse and reality. With the arrival of a young-looking pixie—who turns out to be a full grown, hot-blooded woman—his balance is thrown.
He tries to avoid her, but with the little pixel peeper snapping everything in sight, she unintentionally risks his exposure.

And his focus needs to be sharp to keep her from danger.

Review

Shutter speed is a novella that has a lot of suspense to it.  Definitely set the story up between Ben and Isla.

Isla is taking over the campground for her Uncle who is going to take care of her ailing Aunt. She has a passion for photography which just might get her into trouble.

Ben is trying to move onto the next chapter in his life but he keeps getting dragged back.  The first time he sees Isla he knows there is something special about her but in his current line of work the best thing to do is push her away.  But Isla is very good at being in the wrong place at the wrong time.  Ben must work hard at achieving his goals and keeping her safe.

Shutter speed sets this up to be a thrilling series.  I look forward to the next chapter in Ben and Isla’s story.

For His Eyes Only (Masters and Mercenaries Book 13)

By Lexi Blake

Synopsis

A night he can’t forget

Five years ago, Nick Markovic found himself consumed by his quest for vengeance. The one time he managed to find peace was in the arms of Hayley Dalton. Being with her was like bathing in sunlight, and he ached to feel that again, but he couldn’t. He gave his oath to Hayley’s cousin Desiree, his partner at McKay-Taggart and Knight, that he’d never let his darkness infect Hayley’s innocent world.

A spark she can’t put out

It was years before that Hayley offered everything she had to Nick. After that one amazing night, all she wanted was to be his forever. Unfortunately, Nick’s reaction was to walk away from her and never look back. The warm and caring man she’d discovered was gone, and after Des’s death, he’d only grown colder. But when Hayley finds herself in mortal danger, she’s forced to seek protection from the man who broke her heart.

A flame that threatens to consume them both

Haunted by the women he failed, Nick can’t allow himself to grow close to Hayley again. Running to stay ahead of the powerful forces that endanger their lives, they travel from the lush Garden in London to the glittering lights of Rio. As the threat against her becomes clearer, he realizes that to keep her safe he must confront the demons from his past, even if it costs him a future with the woman he loves.

Review

Some of my friends may say that I have an obsession with this series and they would be correct. For His Eyes Only is a great addition to this series.

Nick is a man who choose retribution over love.  He had a chance to run off with the woman he fell in love with and live a happy life five years ago but he choose to follow the other woman in his life to avenge his sister’s death.  The other woman was Des who we meet and lost in Master No. It was really interesting getting to know the true nature of their relationship.  Des was a sneaky woman that dragged Nick around.  I don’t think even he knew the depths which she would sink to.

Hayley was a girl who fell for a man that wasn’t ready to leave everything else behind five years ago.  She was Des’s cousin and kind of the black sheep of the family.  The English part of her family saw her as the poor American. After losing her cousin and dad she is just going from day to day.  After she read the letter from Des stating that if she is ever in trouble she should find Nick, her house blows up and she knows that she is being followed.  She shows up on the door step at the Garden in London.  They have to work together to keep Hayley alive and to give Nick a second chance to correct past wrongs.

For His Eyes Only is another example of Lexi Blake’s ability to convey a whole range of emotions.  Ian and Charlotte create great moments in this story that make me laugh out loud and inject insight through sarcasm.  Damon and Owen give us some of the more serious advise. We learn a lot more about how Nick got the place where he is at now.  The chemistry between each of the characters is amazing.  They are family and will protect each other.  I don’t think I will ever get enough of this series.  I also love the Zanetti reference.  As in most Lexi Blake books we are given a little tease of what’s to come and I can’t wait because she manages to draw me in with every book.

Sentinel’s Kiss (Sentinels of Babylon #2)

By Jamie K Schmidt

Synopsis

A fiercely protective bad boy. An innocent reporter in serious trouble. They shouldn’t work, but after he throws her onto his bike, there’s no going back.

If Josh Lehman learned one thing as a Green Beret, it’s patience. Josh founded the Sentinels of Babylon because he was sick and tired of watching scumbags cheat the system—scumbags like the man who murdered his sister. Of course, if Josh’s sniper rifle was linked to the death of his ex-brother-in-law, that might be a problem. The bigger problem is the nosy reporter who’s this close to exposing the club. Josh has to find a way to keep her hot mouth from talking . . . but he’ll be damned if he lets someone take her from him. Not on his watch.

Ashley Carver thought she’d do anything for a scoop. That was before her latest story leads to multiple attempts on her life. Ashley’s been investigating a homicide that has gone unsolved for five years when she uncovers evidence tying the vigilantes of the Sentinels of Babylon to a revenge killing. Now she’s in their crosshairs. But after Josh defies all notions of club loyalty to come to Ashley’s aid, soon they’re burning up the sheets—and taking on the world.

Review

Sentinel’s of Babylon or SOBs are a vigilante group that right wrongs that were dismissed by the legal system.   In Sentinel’s Kiss they are righting the murder of Sentinel’s sister, Sarah.  They know who killed her and are ready to act but they find out a reporter has come across new information. They decide there is more to this act of violence than mets the eye and must follow the clues.

Sentinel, or Josh, is a military man who is about to end his brother-in-laws life.  Josh knows that he killed his sister and her unborn child.  The SOB’s have done all their research and they are ready to complete this mission.  But right as they were ready to take the shot, Josh notices that Ashley was there to get an interview.  Josh knew that there was more to this story that he would have to track down.

Ashley Carver is a reporter always after to a good story no matter if her life is in danger or not. She is a daredevil with a solid heart.  Ashley is on the side of the facts. She isn’t looking for a long term relationship with Josh but they have instant chemistry.  There is something about Josh that helps calm her life.  She hasn’t had an easy go of it and deserves to start the next chapter of her life.

Sentinel’s Kiss has a good mystery to it.  Sarah’s murder leads to something deeper and ends up with a twist at the end.  Things aren’t always what they seem.  I loved all of the SOB’s.  I think that they all have an interesting story to tell.

Brighter Than the Sun (KGI #11)

Searing action and passion ignite the latest KGI novel from the #1 New York Times bestselling author of Darkest Before Dawn.

Qualifications: High intelligence, rock-hard body, military background.

But it’s the gorgeous smile and tender words of Joe Kelly that begin to weaken her resolve to never risk her heart again. And Joe will have to put everything on the line to save Zoe, when secrets of her past resurface—and threaten to tear them apart…

Review

Brighter than the Sun has returned me to the KGI series I adore and ultimately into the fold that is the Kelly family. Maya made me cry for the last 1/4 of this book and when the letter was read I sobbed – just breathtaking and beautiful – Marlene and her love for Rusty I cannot wait for this story to play out.  Now back to Joe and Zoe’s story of love which is going to be another one I will cherish as I knew in my heart his would be as special.  Like his twin Nathan’s was, their connection as brothers and then to include Nathan’s wife also completing the connection with Zoe as the awesome foursome – I was so happy for them all.

Joe’s story gave us a slow build up of romance through multiple dates and then also Rusty playing her part as the match making friend. The friendship moments between Rusty and Zoe I really enjoyed as Rusty to me always felt lonely so I am so happy she has a friend like Zoe.  The second half picks up a quick pace for the mystery & suspense part and I look forward to seeing these two charcters in the upcoming KGI books to see the little pitter patter of feet as these Kelly families breed like rabbits. When Joe and Zoe finally had their night of passion well Maya definately gave us lots of hot and steamy moments.

One of my favourite couples in this story was Steele and Maren and how they cared for Zoe after her ordeal, it makes me want to go back and read their love story again as he is like hard nut on the outside but all soft and gooey on the inside.  Maren has been one of my favourite ladies in KGI and also Sophie – her story is my favourites of the series.

Now onto the big surprise that is Rusty’s part in this whole story and from about the last quarter of this story I had endless watery eyes and upon the time I had to read her letter I sobbed for what she is losing, I am so angry right now for Rusty, like poke in the eye angry, I want her to come back to the fold with some hot shot boyfriend to rub salt in the wounds of these men, I want not only Sean to be slapped in the face but some of her so called brothers to freakin stand up for her – no judgements. I am so sad for Rusty, she has such issues with trust and being accepted and these brothers of hers jump down her throat and I find them some times very condescending to her. The shining light in her life are Frank and Marlene and heaven help these boys when Marlene finally makes them stand up and be accountable for her girl taking the course of action she did at the end of this book – I am so sad right now.

Only one part I found a bit tiresome was the big War Room scene, so many names thrown about I admit I became a bit confused and spent time thinking ok they are with that team, who are they again and trying to recall all of the players in each group.

Overall I loved this story and cannot believe how emotional I was for Rusty and I know her story will be that last book of this series and I can honestly say I will probably cry through most of her book!

Review

Firstly I love the cover of This August (Book 2) of the series (Next August) – this is not a standalone you definitely need to read Next August – they are a package deal and you will not be disappointed.

I Loved Next August where we first meet August and Nash with Sam & Anna their friends, they had many hurdles to overcome.  With This August well it is their love story continued but with one last mystery from his dad to overcome.

We get POV from both characters which I love especially with so much happening.

I did find the first half was very fast paced, there were large moments of time jumped and it is more my problem as a reader as I really wanted to know every detail of their lives. The second half of the book just explodes, loved the honeymoon and when the mystery bad guy is revealed and August has to rescue Nash well I was glued to the pages. Nash’s mum and dad are a large part of this story along with Sam of course. Now Sam is one character I adore and to see him stepping up was a pleasure to see.

August is still the domineering lover and there is plenty of enjoyable romantic and passionate scenes for the reader to enjoy. It was also wonderful to have Anna back in their lives even after they are married.

I cannot wait for Sam’s story, I think it will be one highly emotional story considering what he has gone through in his short life, it is going to be a special woman to break down his barriers.
