Review

Firstly I love the cover of This August (Book 2) of the series (Next August) – this is not a standalone you definitely need to read Next August – they are a package deal and you will not be disappointed.

I Loved Next August where we first meet August and Nash with Sam & Anna their friends, they had many hurdles to overcome.  With This August well it is their love story continued but with one last mystery from his dad to overcome.

We get POV from both characters which I love especially with so much happening.

I did find the first half was very fast paced, there were large moments of time jumped and it is more my problem as a reader as I really wanted to know every detail of their lives. The second half of the book just explodes, loved the honeymoon and when the mystery bad guy is revealed and August has to rescue Nash well I was glued to the pages. Nash’s mum and dad are a large part of this story along with Sam of course. Now Sam is one character I adore and to see him stepping up was a pleasure to see.

August is still the domineering lover and there is plenty of enjoyable romantic and passionate scenes for the reader to enjoy. It was also wonderful to have Anna back in their lives even after they are married.

I cannot wait for Sam’s story, I think it will be one highly emotional story considering what he has gone through in his short life, it is going to be a special woman to break down his barriers.

Cole

By Tijan

Cole

Synopsis

I shouldn’t have remembered him.
He was just a guy who walked through a restaurant. I didn’t know his name. We never made eye contact. There was no connection between us at all.
But I could feel him.
The tingle down my spine. The command in his presence. The snap of tension in the air around him. That was the first time I saw him, and I was captivated.
The second time was different.
He was in the mysterious back elevator of my apartment building. Our eyes met for a fleeting second before the doors closed, and I was staggered. My breath was robbed. My senses on high alert. My body hummed.
That was just the beginning.
He was the leader of the mafia. I was about to fall in love with him, and his name…
Cole Mauricio.

Review

Cole & Addison when combined well to put it simply their chemistry and passion was just perfection and when he says those three words you will have tears and tingles.

I devoured Cole and the hidden stories that evolved as his journey progressed. The Mafia connections and the ongoing relationship to Carter Reed was expertly entwined with this story.

Honestly to fully appreciate Cole you need to read Carter Reed 1 and 2 as both Carter and Emma return to Cole’s life and he is a god that man when he graces the pages, freakin Carter Reed – orgasmic pleasures upon these pages!

Two of my favourite characters apart from the leading lovebirds was Sia and Jake, Sia provided some amazing moments of humour and really complemented Addison and pushed her outside her comfort zone.  Jake was that perfect guy you want for your best friend that includes you in their inner circle and has your back and wow Dawn was an interesting surprise just when I was thinking where was she certainly came back with a Bang!

The whole story flowed really well for me and it was paced to perfection and also the timelines and explanation of Cole & Carter was done enough in case the reader has not read Carter Read.

I did not pick the hidden Mafia connections and the drama and action towards the ending was brilliant and then to see that Carter Reed 3 is coming – OMG happy dance right here and I would so love to see Carter and Cole making their own families with these two strong women who have taken these Mafia men into their hearts.

Steel

By Chiah Wilder

Steel

Synopsis

A fierce and feared warrior. His name is Steel, and he’s President of the Night Rebels MC. Part Navajo, part Irish, Steel is a respected leader of his brotherhood. With his tatted muscular body, ebony hair, and green eyes, he is a magnet to women. Never turning away a sexy body, he indulges in casual sex, but nothing more.

For him, defending his brotherhood and protecting his teenage daughter are foremost. Falling in love and being in a long term relationship don’t even make it on his list. He gave his heart to a woman when he was young and weak, but now he’s strong and has no room in his heart for love.

Then he meets his daughter’s social worker. His attraction to her is intense. Desire flares through him, and he’s drawn to her in a way that angers him. He doesn’t have time for a woman, but he can’t get the feisty, spirited caseworker out of his mind.
He wants to run his callused fingers through her hair.

He wants to crush his mouth to hers

He wants to devour her.

But she resists him. No woman has ever resisted him.

When he looks into her eyes, he sees the depths of sorrow and a spark of passion. She’s touched him. He’s never wanted a woman as much as he wants her.
And he always gets what he wants…no matter what.

From the moment Breanna Quine laid eyes on the rugged biker, her body betrayed her. And when she spotted the outlaw’s MC patch on his leather jacket, her blood turned to ice.

Hating bikers since her father gave up his family for the brotherhood, Breanna swore to never be around them again. Then the captivating Night Rebels President’s blazing, green-eyed gaze catches hers, and she is drawn to him like a moth is to fire.

But she can’t let herself fall for him, no matter how much her body buzzes whenever she is near him. As hard as she tries to fight her attraction to the dark, dangerous man, her resistance is weakening. Then when she sees his tenderness toward his daughter, it melts her heart. She has to keep reminding herself that he’s not only a biker, but he’s the worst kind—an outlaw.

Steel has his hands full trying to figure out who is supplying drugs to the teens of Alina, Colorado. Time is running out for him as danger comes knocking at his door threatening to destroy his family and the woman whom he has vowed to make his own.

Can two independent people put their past behind them in order to come together? Will they fight for love against the shadows and the danger that lurks all around them, threatening to destroy them forever?

Review

Steel is a fast paced mystery MC story with some romance but it left me wanting more from these two main characters in the romantic emotional sense.  I actually would have enjoyed this more without the storyline of her brother as I felt both of the two main characters had so much going on in their lives that the romantic journey took second place.

Breanna and Steel’s chemistry I did not feel until around the 30% mark as I felt there were many storylines lines for characters introduced into the book.

The mystery of the Candyman was well done in that for one I did not guess him until the big reveal and that I had thought two other characters were the Candyman so that was well hidden.

I really despised Breanna’s brother and Steel’s daughters storyline was incredibly sad and a tough journey At times.

The angle of the reservation was different but I did feel at times the story did not flow and I admit to reading over some of the mc drama as I wanted to get back to the romance of Steel and Breanna’s.

Two moments that did not flow for me was the altercation between Steel and Breanna’s when he pushed her down through her front door and then also their declaration of love, I did not feel it at that time. When her brother ransacked her house and there was no follow up perhaps with Steel understanding the drama she was dealing with her brother would have perhaps combined their stories of drama and drugs.

To me these two characters had such dramatic personal stories with so much heartache that their love story came in second but the ending does give them a HEA.

A Harmless Little Plan (Harmless # 3)

By Meli Raine

Synopsis

Turns out there was a second video from that awful night four years ago. Mine wasn’t the only tape.

Too bad mine wasn’t the worst.

Drew can’t protect me no matter how hard he tries, but the roles are flipped now. I have to help him, but I’m not wired that way. Not anymore. That one night changed me more than anyone knows.

More than anyone could predict.

Three men think they’re above the law. They’re right.

But I’m willing to go beneath the law to make sure they never harm anyone else. Their threats don’t scare me.

When you have nothing left to lose because someone took it all away, you create the most dangerous creature imaginable.

Me.

Game over.

Review

After loving and quickly devouring the first two books in the Harmless trilogy, I’m sad to say that I found A HARMLESS LITTLE PLAN to be a little disappointing.  Why?  Because despite the happy-for-now ending, I felt there was no real closure in this story.  There are a lot of loose threads and unanswered questions, and I am not a fan of either of those things.

After finding out in the first book that Lindsay’s three friends lied to the police and media about her rape, we never heard about them again or found out why they turned against her.  What did they get out of it?  We never found out why Drew’s friends turned against him either.  Yes, they got money and fame, but what they did to Lindsay and Drew was so hateful and violent that there had to be more to it than just getting paid.  We do find out that people within the NSA, CIA and FBI all have their fingers in this scandalous pie, but we never heard about them being arrested.  Then I have to wonder, if the man pulling the strings was so well connected, why did he feel so threatened and why did he need to have Lindsay raped in the first place?  But then I guess if there’s no rape, there’s no story.  It was also mentioned that this same man may have been involved in the killing of Drew’s parents, and that someone high up (we don’t know where) targeted Drew because they think he’s a threat.  Both of these claims were never investigated and we didn’t find out if these claims were true.  These are just a handful of questions I was left with at the end of this book.  Will they be answered in another book or series, or will we be left hanging?

The first 50% of the book is where all the excitement lies.  After that, the book slows down a lot as we watch Lindsay and Drew heal from their ordeal.  I liked both Drew and Lindsay and was very glad to see them get their revenge and happy ending.  I was hoping to find just one redeeming quality in Lindsay’s mother, but by the end of this book I hated her as much as I did in the beginning of the series.  Throughout the series, I’ve alternated between liking and hating her father, and in the end I found him gutless.  He does love his daughter, but I think he loves his career more and will put it before her.

A HARMLESS LITTLE PLAN is told in dual POVs and is the final book in the Harmless trilogy, which cannot be read as stand-alones.  There is no epilogue, but it comes with a HFN ending.  Honestly, if all the loose threads had been taken care of, if nothing was left unresolved, this would have been a 5❤️ read for sure.

Please Note:  This book contains scenes that may be triggers for some people.

A Harmless Little Ruse (Harmless # 2)

By Meli Raine

Synopsis

She has no idea what she’s doing. Loose cannons never hit their targets.
And they take out plenty of collateral damage.

Four years ago Lindsay experienced the unspeakable right before me, and I couldn’t stop them.
But that’s all changed now.

When her father, Senator Bosworth, contacted me to ask — demand — that I protect her, it was a second chance. A shot at redemption.
An opportunity to right an unspeakable wrong.

Controlling Lindsay as she seeks her revenge on the monsters who hurt her won’t be hard.
Containing my own out-of-control feelings for Lindsay and keeping up this ruse of cold-blooded distance will be.

Even harder than admitting to her what really happened that night four years ago.
It turns out I don’t have to, though.
Someone else did it for me.
And I’ll make sure they regret it.

Review

A HARMLESS LITTLE RUSE continues on from A HARMLESS LITTLE GAME, however in this part of the trilogy we are seeing the story from Drew’s POV.  Again, this review will be kind of vague because I can’t say anything without giving away spoilers.

At the end of book 1, Drew and Lindsay rekindled their relationship and appeared to be on the same page.  But in the beginning of this book, Lindsay does something that has him questioning her feelings and intentions.  While she spent most of the first book questioning whether she could trust him, now it’s his turn to question whether he can trust her.  They spend this book trying to heal old wounds while Drew works on his revenge plans against those who hurt them, but they always seem to be one step ahead of him, as proven by the cliffhanger we are left with.  I’m still not a fan of her parents, who seem to care more about the election than their only child, and I still don’t know who is friend or foe.

We learn more about what happened that night four years ago, and I honestly didn’t think I could hate those three monsters more, but I was wrong.  Despite the new information, all the questions I had from the first book remain unanswered, and I truly hope they will be answered in the next book.  This was another quick read that easily held my attention.

Please Note:  This book contains scenes that may be triggers for some people.

Wolf’s Challenge (Stranger Creatures Book 1)

By Christina Lynn Lambert

Synopsis

Taking risks, especially risks of the handsome male variety, is currently out of the question for Sydney Reid. She will make no exceptions for tall, gorgeous Derrick Porter. Never date a player–it’s rule number one in Sydney’s book, and the charming lawyer constantly devouring her with his eyes is every inch the reason. Despite her best efforts to keep Derrick in the friend zone, sparks fly between the two of them, and Sydney isn’t entirely sure she wants to throw water on the flames.

Can Derrick convince the shy, sexy Sydney to give him a chance, something more than her elusive “maybe”? More importantly, should he? Derrick has a few secrets, the least shocking secret being that he can transform at will into a powerful wolf. He’s still trying to forgive himself for being at the wheel during the accident that killed his son. Losing Sydney when she learns the truth might break him, but he’s pretty sure not having her would be just as bad.

And with an obsessed stalker on their tails, more than their hearts are at issue.

Review

Wolf’s Challenge is a story of a wolf shifter that has lost a lot and woman who is learning to take back her life again.  It’s a carefully crafted tale of loss and courage.

Derrick is a wolf shifter and successful lawyer, is coming back to the world after losing his son in a horrible car accident while he was driving.  He has been going through the motions of life but not really engaging in it.  He joins a running group that is coached by his friend and then paired together with Sydney.

Sydney is recovering from two emotionally damaging relationships.  She is done with men for the moment.  Sydney definitely decides she does not need anymore players.  She decides that Derrick is a player so that definitely means that he is not for her.  But thanks to her friend Jack that she would join his running group is going to put her decision to swear off men to the test.

These two are attracted to each other but Sydney can’t see past her past to give Derrick a chance.  He is persistent because for the first time since the accident he has found someone that he has feelings for.  But there are other forces at work here and there is another person that is obsessed with Derrick that will do everything in her power to bring him down.

I enjoyed Wolf’s Challenge and got wrapped up in their struggle to get past the things that were haunting both of them.  They were both very insecure and had a hard time believing in each other.  The only thing that I was surprised by was that I was expecting a different resolution between Derrick and the person who was obsessed with him, though there was a major answer that was answered and he could move on, I just felt that I wanted there to be more of a confrontation.  But I loved the ending and to see the confidence that both Sydney and Derrick gain from each other.

King’s Captive

By Amber Bardan

Synopsis

For three years, I’ve belonged to Julius King.

Some people would think being stuck on a private island is heaven, but this is my hell.

Because I’m not here as a guest. Not even close. I’m a prisoner. I’m his.

Julius King. Powerful. Wealthy. Dangerous.

There are parts of me he wants that I can’t give him. When he looks at me, there are times I swear he sees someone else. And the scary part is that sometimes, when he touches me, I think he may be someone else, too.

Though my body might be tempted, and he might control everything else, I can’t let him have any piece of my heart. I won’t. But every day, the fight gets harder, and Julius manages to slip past my defenses in the most unexpected ways.

I have to find out the truth about Julius King. Even if it destroys me.

Review

This is going to be a fairly short review, because KING’S CAPTIVE is practically one giant plot twist in the making, and to talk about any of it could be considered a spoiler.

I’ll be honest, I didn’t get this one.  It is told mostly in the present, but also includes flashbacks to an event three years ago, aptly called Bloody Birthday.  That is the day Julius arrived at Sarah’s family home and took her for himself.  Each flashback is designed to give us a piece of the puzzle, but trying to keep track of those pieces was hard given that they were provided out of order.  By that I mean the first flashback takes place at 3.00pm, then 3.15 pm, then 1.20 pm, then 1.40 pm, then 3.30 pm, then 1.56 pm, etc.  Trying to keep track of what happened in the past, and how it related to what was happening in the present, became too much for me and ultimately affected my enjoyment of this story.

You know how you sometimes watch a movie, but when you watch it a second time and know how it ends, everything suddenly makes sense?  I think this is one of those books that would make more sense the second time around.  Maybe then I wouldn’t be left with so many questions.

KING’S CAPTIVE is told in dual POVs, but mostly in Sarah’s.  It is a stand-alone and it comes with a HEA.  While I didn’t enjoy it, I’m sure there are plenty of others who will love it.

A Harmless Little Game (Harmless # 1)

By Meli Raine

Synopsis

Four years ago I lost my virginity on live, streaming television.
Too bad I wasn’t awake for it.
The video went viral. Of course it would. A Senator’s daughter on camera? Wouldn’t you click “share”? Besides, that’s what three of the four guys in the video did.
Share.

They shared me.

But that fourth guy? The nondescript one in the background in the upper left corner of the screen, just sitting on the couch? The only one who did nothing?
Not one single thing.
That was my boyfriend, Drew.
And that was the last time I saw him.

Until today, when my father—now on a path to the White House—hired him as head of security for my new team as I return home after four years of “recovering” in an undisclosed location that involved white lab coats, needles, pills and damage control.

You see, the other three guys never went to jail. Never had charges pressed.
Never faced consequences.
Until today.
Game on.

Review

WOW!  A HARMLESS LITTLE GAME is a book that grabbed me right from the very first page and did not let me go.  I know a book is good when I’m up until 1am reading.  Since this is the first book in the Harmless trilogy that focuses on Lindsay and her desire for revenge, I can’t say much, so this will be a fairly short review.

What Lindsay went through four years ago was horrific.  What’s worse is that the men involved got away with it.  If that doesn’t fire up your anger, I don’t know what will.  I really felt for her and I admired the strength and courage she displayed to stand up for herself.  I also liked Drew, who is a very quiet and controlled man.  I have a feeling that when his control slips, the fallout will be huge and it’s going to be a sight to behold.  I absolutely hated her parents, especially her mother.  Honestly, if it turns out that she had something to do with what happened to her daughter, I would not be surprised at all.  The scene where Lindsay stood up to her mother was awesome and I was so cheering her on.

This book left me with a lot of questions.  Questions that I’m sure will be answered in the following two books.  How did those men get away with it?  Who is protecting them?  Why did they do it?  Did someone put them up to it?  Who is her friend?  Who is her enemy?  Who is telling the truth?  I have so many more questions, but I can’t list them here without giving away some spoilers.

This first part of the trilogy takes place over two to three days and ends in a cliffhanger.  I did find it a little repetitive at times, and I also got annoyed when Drew kept telling Lindsay that she had no idea what she was in for.  I wanted to yell at him to just tell her already, but I guess that would have shortened the story quite a bit.  A HARMLESS LITTLE GAME is told only in Lindsay’s POV, with the next book in the trilogy being told in Drew’s POV, which I’m really looking forward to because I can’t wait to get inside his head.

Please Note:  This book contains scenes that may be triggers for some people.

Carnal Obsession: His Heart’s Prisoner (Carnal Series #4)

By Reily Garrett

Synopsis

Life on the street molds emotional athletes.

Three years ago, her brother’s death marked the beginning of Kendra’s new life, an existence with no home, no family, and no friends. Time in the underground byways toughened her emotional shell with the loose association of like-minded street rats where survival meant compromise and constant vigilance.

Before he died, Billy had sent her a package in care of his teammate, Conner. For Kendra, re-entrance into polite society comes with a deadly price, as betrayal comes from both sides of the grave.

Conner Crofton owns the BDSM club Ambrosia. After failing to protect his teammate on their last covert mission, penance takes form as a promise to safeguard Billy’s little sister, a girl he’d unknowingly remanded to a world of darkness and uncertainty, deception and psychopathic stalkers.

The past will always haunt us. Each must earn forgiveness and trust as passion, guilt, deception, and betrayal, interweave a destiny formed long ago. A romantic suspense with a twist.

Review

Carnal Obsession: His Heart’s Prisoner is Connor’s and Kendra’s story.  Conner’s a protective man who sees Kendra in a sisterly way.  Kendra is a tough girl who had to grow up quick and always had a crush on Conner.  Because of the murder of Kendra’s brother she lost touch with everyone she knew.

Connor has a lot to make up for.  He didn’t realize that Kendra had gone missing.  He thought that she moved with her parents.  If he had known that she was living on the streets he would have started looking for her much sooner.  Connor always felt a sisterly bond with Kendra because of the age difference he never considered her more than that.

Kendra who is now grown and hardened up by the streets is trying to show Connor that she is not longer his best friend’s little sister.  She is now a woman who has always had a crush on him.  It’s just convincing Connor that he is allowed to feel more than just brotherly love for her.

Then there is they mystery of Kendra’s brother death and why he left her the package.  This package put her in a dangerous situation which Connor must protect her from.  This has put everyone on high alert, including Connor’s brothers.

Carnal Obsession: His Heart’s Prisoner is a completely addictive read.  It, like the other novels in this series, had great pacing and a great story line.  I loved his brothers, they provided some very humous moments.  And it also had a mystery to figure out.  I also loved that Connor had a inner dilemma that he had to work through and Kendra had to find her way back into the world again.

When Hunter Meets Seeker (An Arcane Society Novel)

By Betty Shreffler

Synopsis

One evening, in a place she never should’ve been, throws Anya into the heated snare of Dex Grigori. She should’ve seen him as the enemy, but instead her body longs for his touch in ways she’s never experienced.

She’s a deadly hunter that kills without question and he’s exactly the kind of demon she’s been trained to eliminate. Yet his fierce desire to have her brings him dangerously close to her heart, where he soon discovers she is far more than the cold killer he anticipated.

Review

When Hunter Meets Seeker is another great addition into Betty Shreffler’s collection.  It takes us into a world that humans do not know exist.  Where the demons aren’t always the bad guys. This story had many facets to it, a secret society, demons, misguided loyalties, sworn enemies and love.

Anya Carlisle was born into the Arcane Society that hunts and kills demons.  She was taught how to fight and follow orders.  And she excelled at it.  But as she gets older she is starting to question what her purpose is.  Some of the demons that she was ordered to kill seemed to be living honest lives.  She also is questioning if this is what she wants out of life.

By fate she meets Dex Grigori, an incubus demon, that she is sworn enemies with.  They have a hot first encounter that leaves them both in need of each other.  He is everything that she should hate but there is something about him.  He should be running from her because she is very good at killing demons like him.  But can he believe that she is trying to leave that life behind her?

When Hunter Meets Seeker has a little bit of everything.  It has a great mystery within the Arcane Society that Anya has to get to the bottom of, a passionate love story between Anya and Dex and it has betrayal.  The bad guys aren’t always who you think they are.
