Inarticulate

By Eden Summers

BR Inarticulate

Synopsis

He’s silent–but his touch speaks louder than words.

At first sight, Savannah is drawn to the harsh appeal of a man who refuses to talk to her. Keenan’s hard stare is arrogant and unapologetic. The quirk of his sensuous lips is cocky and in control.

But there’s more. There’s something deeper he’s trying to hide behind those steely grey eyes–a slight hint of vulnerability which captures her intrigue.

She’d been warned, told that his silence hides a myriad of lies capable of affecting her career and relationships with loved ones. Only she can’t help herself. Testing Keenan’s defenses is an addiction she can’t deny.

Falling in lust is easy. Learning his secrets comes with a price. The cost? Her broken heart.

Review

“I’ve been hurt by words before, Keenan.  But never have they inflicted as much pain as your silence.”

Savannah is sent to Seattle to resolve some issues their hotel staff is having with the potential new owners.  Unfortunately for her, the woman causing all the problems is her cousin, Penny, who has hated her since they were kids.  She meets Keenan at a family dinner and is told to stay away from him by her other cousin, Dominic, who is also Penny’s brother.  But Keenan is too alluring and Savannah doesn’t want to resist.  So she doesn’t.  But with Dominic against the relationship, Penny out to make her life hell, and Keenan keeping secrets, it’s not long before something has to break.

Savannah is a nice woman, which is obvious by how much she cares for her hotel employees, even though they won’t be her employees for much longer.  But she’s also tough and has no problem standing up for herself against family members and powerful men.  But at times I felt she was a little shallow and judgemental.  She assumed Keenan was nothing more than a lowly employee and compared him to all the rich corporate men she’d dated in the past.  She wanted him despite the fact that she thought he was a nobody, and that didn’t sit well with me.  Keenan is one hot and mysterious man.  He’s very proud and hates being reminded that his inability to talk is considered a failure among family and colleagues.  He hates it even worse when Savannah slips up and says how much she wished he could talk to her.  I give kudos to Ms Summers for writing a character that can draw you in without speaking a single word.

Do you think I wanted to become infatuated with someone who thinks I’m less of a man because I don’t talk?

INARTICULATE is told mostly in Savannah’s POV, however there are some instances where we do see Keenan’s POV, and that mostly comes in the form of his emails to Savannah.  The twist that caused the conflict near the end was shocking, and not one I saw coming.  I really liked that, because it’s not too often I’m taken by surprise anymore.  At this stage, INARTICULATE is a stand-alone that comes with a very nice HEA for Keenan and Savannah.

Wicked Beautiful (Wicked Games # 1)

By J.T. Geissinger

BR Wicked Beautiful

Synopsis

A ruthless businesswoman and the playboy who dumped her long ago find themselves embroiled in a high stakes game of love, lies and revenge.

Life coach and best-selling author Victoria Price has it all: a successful career, fabulous friends, a fantastic penthouse in Manhattan. What she doesn’t have—and doesn’t want—is a husband. Fifteen years ago her high school flame broke her heart so badly she swore she’d never love again. Now she makes millions teaching other women how to be just like her: a ruthless bitch.

Drop-dead sexy restaurant tycoon and infamous playboy Parker Maxwell has only three rules for the women he dates: no questions about his past, no expectations for the future and no spending the night. When he meets Victoria, however, he’s willing to break his own rules if it means sating the explosive desire she arouses in him. What he doesn’t know is that the alluring Victoria Price used to be the mousy Isabel Diaz, the girl he deflowered and dumped long ago.

Presented with a perfect opportunity for revenge, Victoria decides the game is on. But when her connection with Parker proves more than just skin deep, she has to make a choice—continue with her plan for payback, or risk her career, her reputation and her heart by taking a second chance on love?

Review

“You never know how strong you are until being strong is the only choice you have.”

I can’t really say much about WICKED BEAUTIFUL, because to do so would reveal too much of the story.  What I can say is that this book is full of secrets, lies, revenge, manipulation and games.  Oh, and some hot sex.

Parker and Victoria were high school sweethearts and madly in love, until Parker left town suddenly and broke up with Victoria with a letter.  Flash forward fifteen years and they run into each other again.  Victoria recognises Parker instantly, but he has no idea who she is, partly because of all the plastic surgery she had done as part of her new identity.  When she realises he doesn’t recognise her, she initiates a plan for revenge.  She vows to uncover his biggest, darkest secret and use it to ruin him for what he did to her.

Victoria spent most of this book plotting her revenge and living in fear that Parker will figure out who she is and ruin her plans.  She’s constantly afraid that he does know who she is and that he’s only toying with her.  Simply put, she’s an emotional wreck, despite her Queen Bitch title.  Parker spent most of this book calling Victoria out on her lies and bullshit, while trying to break down her walls to get to the woman underneath.  I knew there had to be more to their story because not once did Parker act like an arsehole.  Yes, he’s rich and arrogant, but he’s also very kind and generous, donating to several charities that are special to him.  When she learns the truth about what happened all those years ago, she’s devastated and forgives him in an instant.  But instead of revealing who she is, she runs, leaving him to figure it all out for himself.

WICKED BEAUTIFUL is told in dual POVs and is the first book in the Wicked Games series.  I’m assuming each book in the series could be read as a stand-alone given that book two is about a different couple: Connor and Tabby.  Connor is Parker’s friend, and Tabby is Victoria’s friend.  The chemistry between those two was off-the-charts and I wouldn’t mind reading their story.

Sugar Rush (Sugar Bowl # 2)

By Sawyer Bennett

BR Sugar Rush

Synopsis

After posing as an escort for the Sugar Bowl online dating service, Sela Halstead is looking for one thing: payback. She’s closing in on the site’s heartless founder, Jonathon Townsend, and she needs Beckett North, Townsend’s business partner and her lover, by her side. She’d thought that their intimate nights together had forged an unbreakable bond, but after a shocking betrayal, Sela begins to doubt the brilliant bad boy. When push comes to shove, can she trust Beck to do the right thing?

Now that he understands the truth, Beck will stop at nothing to secure the reckoning Sela deserves. But between his desire for her and his disgust for JT, Beck doesn’t exactly have a lot of control over his emotional state. Left with no other choice, he must summon all his discipline to maintain JT’s trust and pretend that they’re still friends. But how far will Beck go to prove his loyalty to Sela? He nearly lost her once. To keep her, Beck might have to kill for her.

Note: Sugar Rush ends on a cliffhanger. Sela and Beck’s story concludes in Sugar Free!

Review

Sawyer Bennett has done it again; SUGAR RUSH had me hooked from beginning to end.  I read this in one sitting because it was just that good.

We continue on from where SUGAR DADDY ended, with Sela laying broken on the floor outside of Beck’s apartment after confessing her secret to him…and Beck calling her a liar.  Despite the rough start, Beck and Sela find themselves back on solid ground fairly quickly, and that’s all because Beck realises his mistake and makes amends immediately.  He owns up to his actions, both to Sela and to her father, and he apologises for them.  No excuses, just an apology and a promise to never do it again.  He truly is a great guy.  But when he hears the entire story from Sela, a little bit if darkness invades his heart and he becomes desperate to make JT pay for his crimes.  While both would happily kill him in a heartbeat if they could get away with it, they know they have to play this smart, and with some outside help, a plan is put into action to get JT out of the Sugar Bowl and into the hands of the police.

Usually I find the second book in a trilogy to be a bit boring and mostly filler, but that’s so not the case with SUGAR RUSH.  A few shocking and scandalous secrets are revealed in this story, and I have a feeling more are yet to come.  I was on the edge of my seat from the moment Beck and Sela came up with their plan to take JT down, praying that their plan wouldn’t backfire and blow up in their faces.  And don’t even get me started on that ending, which had my heart racing trying to figure out what the hell was going to happen.  SUGAR RUSH is told in dual POVs and is part of a trilogy, so it can’t be read as a stand-alone.  As with SUGAR DADDY, SUGAR RUSH ends with a doozy of a cliffhanger that will have you begging for the third and final book, SUGAR FREE, which comes out on October 11.  Where this story will take me next, I have no idea, but I’m sure looking forward to the ride.

Please note: This book talks about rape which may be a trigger for some readers.

Filthy Foreign Exchange # 2

By S.E. Hall & Angela Graham

BR Filthy Foreign Exchange 2

Synopsis

The conclusion to Echo and Kingston’s story.

When Echo Kelly is invited on a backpacking trip throughout the UK, she jumps at the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, refusing to let one fleeting past exchange stop her.

At least, that’s what she’s convinced herself of, until the moment she sees him again. It’s not the one-time “run-in” she was expecting, and therefore prepared to handle.

Instead, it’s an announcement she never saw coming…he’s the tour guide.

She’s got no backup plan for that.

Kingston knew what it meant the moment Echo accepted the offer. And when he lays eyes on her, standing in his childhood home, her fate is sealed forever. There’s not a damn thing that will stop him from finally claiming what’s always been his.

Her.

Not everyone gets a second chance—and Kingston Hawthorne sure as hell isn’t going to let his slip away.

Review

I bought FILTHY FOREIGN EXCHANGE # 2 as soon as I finished book 1, because it ended in a cliffhanger and I wanted to see how Kingston & Echo’s story ended.  Why was Kingston framed?  Why did he leave so suddenly?  Why didn’t he defend himself?  I thought I’d get answers to those questions in this book, so I was disappointed to get to the end and realise that no, I wouldn’t be getting those answers.  We never found out why Kingston was framed or if the real perpetrators were ever punished, and I hate loose threads like that.  Instead, the book starts about a year later with Echo on her way to the UK for a backpacking adventure provided by Kingston’s mother’s charitable foundation.  Echo is still hung up on Kingston, but she denies it to herself and anyone that will listen, and Kingston is determined to win her back, but she’s angry and refuses to listen to anything he has to say.  This is what makes up most of the story.

While I was able to read this in pretty much one sitting, I found I didn’t enjoy it as much as the previous book.  I can’t really describe it, but it’s like there was a huge switch between books 1 and 2, and I just couldn’t wrap my head around it.  When Kingston fled the US, Echo’s parents hated him, but flash forward a year and they seem to like him, but they’ve never explained their change of feelings to Echo.  In book 1, Kingston’s father is made out to be a mean SOB, but when we meet him here, he’s really very nice and clearly loves his son.  Echo seemed very mature for her age in book 1, but acts a little childish in this book.  As I said, I can’t really explain it, but it’s almost like nothing was the same, if that makes sense.  The story isn’t terrible, but this was not the conclusion I was looking for, although it does come with a HEA.  This is book 2 in a duet about Kingston and Echo, so it can’t be read as a stand-alone.  I think Echo’s brother might get his own book, but I don’t think I’ll be reading it.

Filthy Foreign Exchange Series

Filthy Foreign Exchange # 1

By S.E. Hall & Angela Graham

Pageflex Persona [document: PRS0000032_00028]

Synopsis

Echo Kelly is loyal to her studies, family, and aerial artistry. She has no time for or interest in anything else, and is heartbroken when her oldest brother, Sebastian, gets accepted to a study-abroad program— exchanging places with cocky, not-at-all-shy foreign exchange student Kingston Hawthorne.

Kingston Hawthorne had the life every twenty-year-old guy dreams of— endless cash, easy women, and fast cars— until his father ripped it all away, shipping him off to the States and placing him temptingly close to the underage virgin who fascinates him in the most challenging of ways.

With Kingston’s bedroom just a connecting bathroom away from Echo’s, the chemistry between them is even more enticing than the notes he leaves for her on the shower door.

How long can you pretend you’re just friends?

Review

Sometimes it’s nice to sit down with a book that you can just relax with and enjoy, and FILTHY FOREIGN EXCHANGE # 1 was that book.  The story and its characters aren’t complex, and I didn’t have to worry about remembering every little detail for possible future reference.  It was just a light and easy read.

Echo is a seventeen year old virgin who’s upset that her older brother, Sebastian, has left for England to study abroad for the twelve months.  She’s even more upset that they’re getting an exchange student of their own and that he’ll be living with them.  She wants to hate Kingston on principle, but after they “meet”, there’s something about him that calls to her.  She tries to deny it, but that’s hard to do when he focuses all his charm directly at her.  Echo is a loner and comes across as much older than her age most of the time.  She’s intelligent and has a very quick wit that she uses against Kingston often.  I don’t think we’re told Kingston’s age, but he is in college.  He’s cheeky and very playful, and the biggest flirt you’ll ever meet.  It’s his flirting that causes tension between them, but that’s just one of the many problems that keeps them apart.

FILTHY FOREIGN EXCHANGE # 1 is told in Echo’s POV only and is the first book in a duet about Kingston and Echo.  I would classify this story as being YA.  Despite the title, there is absolutely nothing filthy about what goes on in this book.  What does that mean?  That means there was no sex.  Zero.  Zilch.  Nada.  As an Australian, I had no problem deciphering Kingston’s slang, but I can imagine that not everyone would be able to follow it so easily.  As I said before, this book was light and easy, which was not a good thing when it came to the cliffhanger, which I thought was a little weak.  Will we find out why Kingston was set up and get a reasonable explanation as to why he was sent back to England so soon?  I guess I’ll have to read book 2 to find out.

By Elisabeth Grace

BR Burn

Synopsis

“No”

One word.
Two letters.

But those two letters changed everything.

It was impossible to predict the impact I would have on the life of the only woman I’d ever truly loved. No way to know that I would result in her ruin.
I’d suffer for eternity with the knowledge that it was me who brought devastation to her doorstep.

Though I deserved the anguish I felt, to see her suffer was unacceptable.

I would fix this.

Somehow I would prove to her that I wasn’t the monster she thought I was.

Even if it meant becoming a monster in order to make that happen.

Review

“More than anything, what I want is your happiness.  That’s all I’ve ever wanted, Emily.”

Sometimes writing a review really sucks, and that’s especially true in this case because all I want to do is talk about everything that happened, but I can’t because to do so would give away major spoilers.  However, I’ll do my best to keep this review spoiler-free.  If you’ve read HOOK, you’ll know that it ended with a doozy of a cliffhanger, one that left Marco and Emily shattered.  Marco is wracked with guilt for his part in destroying Emily’s life and he vows to make those responsible pay.  Emily is also hell-bent on revenge, but she goes it alone because she blames Marco for what happened.

Emily goes to a very dark place in this book and does things I wasn’t really a fan of.  Yes, she’s an escort which means she has sex with multiple men, but what she puts herself through in the name of vengeance was a little difficult to read.  Thankfully, when she learns the truth about what happened and starts to really heal, she becomes the likeable woman she was in HOOK.  Marco solidifies his good-guy status in this book, for sure.  I liked him in HOOK, even though he was obviously hiding something, and when we learn what that was, you can’t help but feel bad for him because he put his trust in people that ultimately let him and Emily down.  His desire to seek out revenge was as cold as Emily’s, but more calculating.  Is it wrong that it made him that much hotter?

What I’ve loved most about this series are the twists and turns.  I spent the entire book trying to figure out the who and the why and the what was going to happen next.  It’s rare that a book can keep me on my toes, so I’m absolutely thrilled when one does.  Like HOOK, I did find BURN a little slow at times, especially when things started looking up for Marco and Emily.  However it was those slow times that had me on the edge of my seat, because I just knew the other shoe was going to drop at some point; and just when things seem to be going well…BAM!  Another twist that I didn’t see coming.  BURN is told in dual POVs and is part of a duet, so it can’t be read as a stand-alone.  The author has alluded that there may be another book, but I don’t know whether it will be about Marco and Emily, or another character from this duet.  I’m going to assume it’ll be about another character because Marco and Emily get a very lovely HEA at the end of this book and the bad guys got everything they deserved.

Join Connor and Ellery as they embark on a journey of courage, love and strength. Will it be enough to save them?

**18+ For adult situations and language**

Review

This is told from Ellery’s POV and what an emotional journey we are taken on, there are many secrets from both Ellery and Connor, this story is paced well and has moments of humour from great supporting characters and also Ellery’s pure headstrong personality. Connor and Ellery have great banter even in tough times and their chemistry was perfect.

I loved this story, it had me laughing, crying and feeling such happiness for true love and second chances.

Book 2 sees this story being told from Connors POV and so many questions will no doubt be answered.

You know you have a wonderful story when there are too many quotes to pick from, however this below quote for me is my favourite and probably a turning point for me in the story when Ellery the next day decides she is going to fight for her infinity.

Quote: “Why are you doing this?” he asked as he turned and looked at me. “Because I can lie here and no one will know I’m crying.” He looked at me for a moment and then back up at the falling rain. We lay there and didn’t speak a work.

Royal Date (The Royals Of Monterra # 1)

By Sariah Wilson

BR Royal Date

Synopsis

This Cinderella didn’t plan on a prince . . .

Kat MacTaggart is a girl who has a plan for everything—including her holiday ski trip to Monterra with her best friend. Everything is going according to plan until she finds herself careening out of control down a mountainside and being rescued by a guy who looks like Superman’s hotter Italian cousin.

HRH Prince Nico is intrigued by the woman he saved on the slopes and her refusal to date him. He offers Kat a deal—let him show her his country and he’ll pay her to write articles that will help Monterra’s tourism industry. Kat agrees, but given her past and lingering distrust of men, she has one condition—absolutely no kissing.

Thanks to the claims of a jealous British noblewoman and the schemes of a meddling paparazzo, Kat’s rule doesn’t seem to be a problem at first. But the more Kat gets to know Nico and the people around him, the harder it is to remember her keep-your-distance plan. Should she stick to it or risk everything for a chance at happily ever after?

Review

What was it with European men?  American guys didn’t give me the time of day.  But over here I was like some kind of dude catnip.

You know, I honestly don’t think I’ve ever read a book like this before; one that is an honest-to-God fairytale.  Girl meets Boy.  Girl tries to deny attraction.  Girl finds out that Boy is a prince who wants to take her to his castle and make her his future queen.  Sigh.

I really liked both Kat and Nico.  Their chemistry was amazing and the romance was sweet.  Kat is a twenty-four year old virgin who has never even been kissed.  She’s waiting for marriage before giving herself fully to a man, but there’s another reason why she’s never been intimate with a man.  She’s intelligent and beyond kind, but she’s not had an easy life and she’s a little naive when it comes to relationships and therefore reacts badly in certain situations.  I liked her right from the start when she kept brushing off Nico when they first met.  Nico.  Oh Nico.  If only you were a real man I’d come looking for you in a heartbeat.  Handsome, charming, loyal, rich and future king, he’s also very sweet and he always tells the truth.  What’s not to like?  There were so many things he said in this book that made me swoon that it was hard to pick out just three of my favourite quotes.

“You have only to tell me what dragons need slaying, and I will see to their quick deaths.”

“Why did you come up to me at the lodge?”
“Every other woman in the lobby was preening and made up with fake hair and fake…other body parts and there you sat, uncaring if anyone even noticed you.  You were fresh, natural, and obviously intelligent, and I wanted to talk to you.”

“From the moment we met I knew I would fall in love with you.”

ROYAL DATE is told only in Kat’s POV (from memory) and comes with a HEA.  This is the beginning of a new series from Sariah Wilson and each book will contain a new love interest for each of the three royal brothers.  This book is definitely a fairytale in that there is no sex anywhere within.  Not even behind closed doors.  Was I waiting and hoping for a love scene?  Yes.  Yes I was.  But the story was enjoyable despite it not having a single one.  I will be putting the next two books in this series on my TBR list.

Something So Right

By Natasha Madison

Sexy and fit couple in underwear

Synopsis

The moment everything changed didn’t happen in that cliché rockets-red-glare kind of way, it happened in the form of a waking nightmare. I caught my husband, my high-school sweetheart, the father of my children, balls deep in a sordid affair.

That was when I gave up on men and love.

I didn’t count on the NHL’s golden boy, the beautiful, arrogant Cooper Stone turning my life and my hockey rink upside down.

My kids are why I wake up in the morning.
Hockey is what Cooper breathes for.

We’re from different worlds and places in our lives but when our hearts collided something so wrong and different turned into something so right.

Review

SOMETHING SO RIGHT is the debut novel from Natasha Madison, and one I enjoyed.  It’s the story of Parker, a single mum to two kids who caught her husband having an affair two years earlier, and Cooper, an NHL superstar who’s rehabbing at her facility during the off-season.  Like Parker, when they first met I wanted to beat Cooper’s arse for how rude and arrogant he was to her, and I loved how she let him keep the upper hand for a few hours before knocking him down with a polite yet effective punch.  Parker is funny and easy-going, but she’s also not afraid to stand up for herself when she has to.  Cooper starts out unlikeable, but he quickly turns his attitude around and becomes swoon-worthy book-boyfriend material.

So, why only three hearts?  Because while I enjoyed the story, there were some things I didn’t like about it.
1 – The amount of sex in this book.  I know there are a lot of people out there that love snatching up a book when they hear a reader complaining about too much sex, so for those people I say “buy away” because you won’t be disappointed.  There are about a dozen sex scenes in all, and I started skipping them early on just to get back to the good part…the story.
2 – The dirty talk, especially when it came from Parker.  I still can’t make up my mind on whether I found it laughable or cringe-worthy.
3 – The number of times the word “vagina” came up in conversation or inner-monologue.  It was used six times in the first chapter alone, and used a total of nineteen times.  Maybe that makes me sound like a prude, but I can honestly say that I have never read a book where that word is used that many times.

So what did I like about it?  Well that’s easy:  the characters.
1 – I loved that Parker’s children acted their age.  Matthew was protective of his mother but he could also act like the surly teen you expect a boy his age to behave.  Allison was an adorable little girl whose innocence shined through the pages.
2 – I loved how Cooper interacted with the kids.  He always answered their questions with honesty and he always treated them with love and respect.  He never made them feel as though he was encroaching on their family, but instead that he was adding to it.
3 – I loved how Parker stood up for herself with Cooper’s crazy ex-girlfriend and that she didn’t let her lack of self-confidence weigh her down throughout the entire book.  After that first misunderstanding, she trusted Cooper’s feelings for her and never doubted their relationship again.

For a debut novel, I thought SOMETHING SO RIGHT was well written.  Once you took out the sex, what was left of the story was very enjoyable.  I did notice a few mistakes where I don’t know if there was something wrong with my copy, or if these mistakes were missed by the editor and beta readers.  Some words were missing at the beginning of a few sentences.  In a dinner scene, they’re supposed to be having steak, but then it turns into chicken.  At the beginning, it says that Cooper has won five Stanley Cups, but towards the end, it says he’s playing for his fourth Stanley Cup.  The only reason I caught this discrepancy is because I thought it was odd that a player could win five Cups in the span of a 12-13 year career, at least in this century.  These mistakes aren’t a big deal and they didn’t affect my rating, but I thought they were worth mentioning in the off chance the author reads my review and wants to correct them in a future edition.

SOMETHING SO RIGHT is told mostly in Parker’s POV, with a few chapters from Cooper’s POV.  At this stage it appears to be a stand-alone and it comes with a beautiful HEA set four years into the future.  I know I’ve brought up a lot of dislikes and issues, and it probably sounds like I hated this book, but I would happily read more from this author, who I think has a lot of potential.

Seducing The Boss

By Mari Carr

BR Seducing The Boss

Synopsis

Kellan James is unwinding at Score when he spots the last person he’d ever expect to find in his favorite bar. Sara Connelly—ER nurse, do-gooder, charitable crusader, and frequent pain in his ass. Both grew up privileged in swanky Southampton, but that’s where the similarities end. Kellan’s made it his mission to seek out life’s pleasures; Sara gains pleasure from lecturing him on his lifestyle. Kellan would never date someone like her. Ever.

But when Kellan discovers Sara’s been stood-up by an online date, something fierce and protective awakens inside of him. Typically, Kellan would enjoy teasing the jilted Sara, but something in her face sends him over to her table with a plan. He encourages her to take a walk on the wild side, one weekend of sin, no holds barred.

She accepts, but it quickly becomes apparent that one night isn’t enough. As the pull between them grows stronger, Kellan discovers it’s a very dangerous thing to say never.

Review

SEDUCING THE BOSS was a nice and easy read about Kellan and Sara, co-workers who have been just friends since they were children, until Kellan proposes adding benefits to their friendship.  Simply put, this was a classic story of two friends who add sex to the mix, but the man is resistant to relationships, so the woman walks away, man realises what he’s lost and can’t live without her anymore, makes a grand gesture, and we get a HEA.

SEDUCING THE BOSS is a novella, so everything moves very fast; Kellan goes from commitment-phobe to married man in the span of a month.  I did have some trouble following the timeline, but I think that timeframe is accurate.  The sex was hot and I loved the backstory about why Kellan didn’t believe in marriage.  It’s told in dual POVs and while it’s part of a series that’s being written by multiple authors, I’d classify this as a stand-alone.
