Going Hard (Steele Ridge #2)

By Kelsey Browning

Synopsis

Slick sports agent Griffin Steele is living the highlife in Los Angeles, far from the shadow of the North Carolina mountains where he grew up. But when his hometown falls on hard times and needs his help, Grif reluctantly agrees to commute between coasts. He never expects the lush scenery, in the form of pretty tomboy Carlie Beth Parrish, to be such a temptation.

After an impetuous one-night stand with Grif Steele fifteen years ago, hardworking blacksmith Carlie Beth has tried to make a living and raise her daughter in the hometown she loves. Then, too-sexy-for-his-Rolex Grif blows back into town like the perfect storm, making Carlie feel less like a thirty-something mom and more like an infatuated teenager.

When a stalker targets Carlie Beth, Grif can’t help but step in to protect her. But once he discovers the fourteen-year-old secret she’s been keeping from him, will he embrace the truth or will he turn his back on Steele Ridge and Carlie Beth forever?

Review

Going Hard is Griff’s story and I loved his romantic connection with Carlie and what a secret she has for him.

My favorite moments was when everyone finally put all the pieces of the puzzle together with Carlie’s big secret.  Aubrey was a beautiful character for me and I hope she continues on in the other stories for the other brothers. I thought the emotions showed by Aubrey and Carlie were well played out by the author. Griff reaction to the secret helped me connect to him.

One brother who stood out for me was Britt as he really intrigues me, he is a very closed book.

I actually had the whole mystery component pegged down to two characters and was totally wrong!  This part of the story was interesting and helped connect the brothers back together when they went into protection mode.

This story does flow well and kept me engaged between the family reconnecting and also solving the town issues.  At times I did think there were so many characters and I was just keeping up with who was who.

Griff’s mother was simply beautiful in engaging with Aubrey and starting to build family connections.

I am already looking forward to reading the next installment, however, I have to stop myself jumping to favourite characters as all the books are available.

The author ended this story really well and I hope we get to see a wedding and more babies for these two long lost lovers.

Wicked Envy (Wicked Horse Vegas # 3)

By Sawyer Bennett

The request seems simple. One friend helping another in her time of need. But now that they’ve crossed the threshold, things aren’t as easy as they once seemed. Not only is Dane looking at Avril in a new light, but so is their other business partner and best friend, Andrew Collings. As Dane’s envy blooms, he wonders if he made the right decision when he agreed to show Avril his wicked world.

What happens when the lines of friendship are blurred and boundaries are crossed? Will their relationships survive or will jealousy tear them all apart?

Review

I’m just going to come right out and say it: I couldn’t really get into WICKED ENVY.

I love a good threesome as much as the next girl, and the sex between Avril, Dane and Andrew was some of the hottest sex I’ve read in a long time.  As in it’ll give you tingles and make you want to reach for your husband/boyfriend/B.O.B. hot.  That being said, I did find it a little unbelievable that Avril’s first time trying anal was during a DP and that she was able to handle it like a pro.

What I couldn’t get my head around, and what ultimately affected my enjoyment of this story, was the sudden sexual relationship between Avril, Dane and Andrew after seventeen years of friendship.  Why?  Because in all that time, they’d never really had any sexual thoughts about one another, nor had any of them been secretly in love with one of the others, but one day they all just decide to start sleeping together.  All the while promising that it wouldn’t affect their friendship, while at the same time believing that their bond (a word that was overused throughout this book) would be even stronger because of the sex-without-emotions they were now sharing.  It was just so out of the blue and I wasn’t feeling it at all.

WICKED ENVY is told in the POV of all three friends and does come with a HEA, though it wasn’t the ending I was expecting.  I blame myself for that, because if I’d taken a better look at the cover and synopsis, I would have known in advance how this was going to end.  WICKED ENVY is the third book in the Wicked Horse Vegas series, but it can be read as a stand-alone without any problem at all.  While I may not have enjoyed this story as much as the others, that’s not going to stop me from reading the next book in the series.

Review

Misadventures of a Backup Bride is about a man with a problem. In order to save his late father’s company he has agreed to marry the daughter of a rival CEO in order to get financial backing and still maintain control of his company. But he has devised a plan to make sure that he can keep his company and marry the person he wants to.

I had so much fun reading this book.  I don’t think Carson and Ella realized how perfect they were for each other in the beginning and it was a treat watching them navigate the crazy mess that Carson was in.

This book also had a twist at the end that had me rooting for every character which made their story even better. I can tell how much fun Shayla Black had writing this book.

Review

After reading and enjoying TEMPT THE BOSS, I was really looking forward to reading TEMPT THE PLAYBOY, but sadly I didn’t enjoy this one anywhere near as much as I did the previous book.

The first 75% of this book takes place in the same timeline as the first book, so when the scenes from the first book also included Noah and/or Kaleigh, we see those scenes duplicated in this book.  If I had bought this book, I’d be very angry at paying for a story that, for the most part, is a replica of the first book just told in different POVs.

I also noticed a few mistakes throughout the story that really bugged me, because they’re all simple mistakes that should have been caught.  Noah tells his assistant to take the next day off because he’ll be in court all day, but then he spends the entire next day in his office.  Noah invites himself to one of Kaleigh’s yoga sessions, and the next day he’s telling his friends that he’s going to be joining her for goat yoga, but Kaleigh never mentioned that it was goat yoga.  At the beginning of the book, Noah is talking about how excited he is that Luca will be starting at the firm, but several weeks later and towards the end of the book, Luca speaks up in a meeting and Noah has no idea who he is and asks him for his name.

Finally, I didn’t like Noah much at all.  I think he was written to be funny, but I thought he was nothing more than a pig.  He talks about women and his conquests in a way that I found absolutely disgusting.  The final straw was when he was complaining about how he was once tied to a chair and couldn’t masturbate while watching two women have sex…in front of Kaleigh and her parents.  He could be sweet at times, and I loved how eager he was to impress Kaleigh, but he annoyed me for most of the story.

So what did I like about it?  I liked Kaleigh and her quirky ways.  I laughed out loud at the scene where she was trying to cook for Noah for the first time.  She failed spectacularly and it was hilarious.  I also loved the proposal while they visited New York, which was beautiful and very well done.

TEMPT THE PLAYBOY is told in dual POVs, and as with the previous book, there was a lot of unnecessary repetition with the POV switches, which I found irritating.  TEMPT THE NEIGHBOR is the next book in the series and will be about Luca, the new associate at Noah’s firm, but at this stage I’m not sure if I’ll read it.

Breaching The Contract (Conflict Of Interest # 1)

By Chantal Fernando

Synopsis

Katerina Dawson knows exactly what she wants from life. And as the new associate at the top law firm in the city, she’s ready to live out her dreams of becoming a criminal lawyer. But going on coffee runs and babysitting kids during the day was definitely not what she had in mind. She knows that anyone else would kill to be in her shoes, but she has to draw the line somewhere. That’s easier said than done, though, when Kat has to confront her handsome boss…

Tristan Channing and Jaxon Bentley run a successful law firm together and the two partners couldn’t be busier right now. When Jaxon suddenly takes a leave of absence, Tristan begrudgingly assumes responsibility of the new associate, the hot new associate, who has curves for days. Needing to keep his distance from her, Tristan sends Kat on needless errands and has her doing work even an intern wouldn’t touch, like picking up his kids. But his plan backfires when he sees his children grow attached to Kat and sees her getting comfortable in his home. It triggers something deep within him, and it feels right to have her there. Will Tristan be able to keep his work and personal lives separate, or will he find that his heart holds the final verdict?

Review

BREACHING THE CONTRACT was a quick and enjoyable read, and the first book I’ve read from Chantal Fernando.  That being said, it is a novella, so it moves really fast and there isn’t much depth to the story or its characters.  The story could have benefited from being fleshed out, especially in regards to the two big reveals made towards the end.  They had the potential to really bring out your emotions, but because they were skimmed over, it was hard to feel much of anything at all.  Also, while this story revolves around two lawyers who work at the same firm, you won’t see any legal action, so if you are hoping to see some legal battles, you will be disappointed.

BREACHING THE CONTRACT is told in Kat’s POV, with the epilogue being told in Tristan’s POV, and it comes with a happy ending for Tristan and Kat.  It is the first book in a new series, but it can be read as a stand-alone as each book in the series will be about another couple.  From the looks of it, the next book will be a full-length novel and because of that, I would be interested in reading it.

Review

Scandalous again proves the Hotholes are one dynamic tribe of men hell-bent on supporting each other – they are family.

Surprising me were the many twists in this story and I did not guess any of them.  Perfectly planned plots will have your second guessing characters and motives. Many times I put the book down and had to take a moment as I was petrified for Edie.

Edie was a simply stunning character, her strength, and resilience.  Her father was a major manipulator and his evilness knew no bounds.

Many times I had to put the book down and take a moment as I was petrified for Edie.   At times I truly felt such deep despair for her and such hatred for the adults in her life.

Edie and Trent’s sex scenes were off the charts hot.  They offered different levels of emotional connection between them.

Trent’s daughter Luna was a beautiful character and I saw hope for Edie.

Scandalous again proved that the Hotholes are a united front and I have thoroughly enjoyed this entire series.

I’ve worked hard to build what I have so I’m determined to keep things strictly professional, but with every look, every stray touch, I fall a deeper under their spell.

Review

HER BILLIONAIRE BOSSES is a quick read that involves Leo and Asher, two long-time friends and business partners, who like to share women and the next woman they set their sights on is Rose, their employee.

HER BILLIONAIRE BOSSES was an ok read, but not one I’d feel inclined to read again.  The threesome scenes were definitely hot, but there were only a handful of them, if that.  The relationship, from beginning to conflict to resolution to end, was predictable and has been done before.  However, the suspense side of the story towards the end was unexpected.

HER BILLIONAIRE BOSSES is told in the POV of all three main characters and is a stand-alone.

Cheater (Curious Liaisons # 1)

By Rachel Van Dyken

Synopsis

Lucas Thorn wasn’t born a cheater. All it took was a single moment—say, a certain disastrous incident on the night before his wedding—and boom. Reputation destroyed forever and always. So now he owns it. He has a lady friend for every night of the week (except Sundays—God’s day and all), and his rules are simple: No commitments. No exceptions.

But a certain smart-mouthed, strawberry blonde vixen is about to blow that all to hell.

Avery Black has never forgiven Lucas for cheating on her sister. And suddenly being forced to work with him is pretty much a nightmare on steroids. Of course, it does afford her the opportunity to make his life as difficult as possible. But no good revenge scheme comes without payback. Because he didn’t become the Lucas Thorn without learning a few things about women.

Now Avery’s lust for vengeance has turned into, well, lust. And if Lucas stops cheating, it’s definitely not because he’s falling in love…

Review

I have mixed feelings about CHEATER, which is why I’m ultimately giving it 3❤️.  It held my attention and had me laughing at some scenes, but was it occasionally a little too silly?  Yes.  Were some of the scenes—and character behavior—unrealistic and over-the-top?  Most definitely.  Does it have a high school vibe to it, even though Lucas is 32 years old?  Yep.  But if you can put all that aside, you will find it to be an enjoyable read.

That being said, here are the main issues I had with the story.

1 – Some of the characters thoughts and conversations were quite repetitive and were almost repeated word for word in some cases.  There were also several inconsistencies throughout the entire story that were so blatant I had to wonder how they were missed by everyone who had a hand in getting the book ready for publishing.

2 – Lucas is not a cheater.  Does he have seven women he regularly has sex with on an almost daily basis?  Yes.  But he’s honest with all of his partners that their relationship is purely sexual, they’re all aware of the other women and they fully understand the situation, so I don’t classify what he does as cheating.  Oh, and spoiler alert, he didn’t cheat on his fiancé either.  So when I say that Lucas is not a cheater, I mean he’s truly not a cheater.

3 – I haven’t read them all, but from the reviews I have read, a lot of people have taken issue with Lucas being a manwhore.  But no-one seems to blink an eye about the truly disturbing part of the story: that when Lucas was 27 years old, he lusted after and planned on seducing Avery…who was just 17 years old and still in high school.  I won’t lie, that made my skin crawl.

I know it sounds like more bad than good, but I didn’t hate this story.  As I said at the beginning, it held my attention and it made me laugh, so it wasn’t all bad.  CHEATER comes with a happy ending for Lucas and Avery, but the ending mainly sets up the reader for the next book in the series, which is about their best friends, Thatch and Austin.  Will I read their story?  I’m honestly not sure at this stage.

My Hot Boss

By Betty Shreffler

Synopsis

Emma
From the moment I met Grayson Cole, I knew he was someone I wanted to let in my panties and maybe, even in my heart. One night, one sexy-as-sin kiss, and several drinks later, our incredible evening turns into a disaster and I’m apologizing for the vomit spatter on his fancy, black shoes. I never thought I’d see him again after that, no matter how many nights I spent wishing I would. Until a month later, he waltzes into my office as—MY NEW, HOT BOSS.
I’m so screwed.

Grayson
She was meant to be a fun f*ck. That’s all I wanted. That’s all I needed. But Emma Williams could never be just that for me. The quirky, brunette vixen challenges me at every opportunity. My desire to have her has me working for her affections, like I’ve never done before. What is this woman doing to me? Not only am I her Boss, but I don’t do feelings. There’s only one way I see this ending.
I’m f*cked for sure.

Review

My Hot Boss should have been called My Steamy Hot Boss.  Betty Shreffler has written a story with heart, heartache and steaminess.

Emma is a woman who has been through some heartache and is extremely careful about jumping back into the dating game.  In a way it seems like she has become resigned to the fact that she is never going to find that one guy.  I found her to be written honestly.  Even though she has been through a lot with her last relationship and her confidence is shaken, she gave everything of herself hoping for the same in return.  I loved her wit and her self doubt.

I could fall for Grayson.  He is a complex character that is learning about himself and what it means when someone else loves you.  But because of his family and his past, he was hold himself back from giving Emma what she really deserved.

Betty does an amazing job of drawing out these characters so by the end they feel like friends.  And she writes some very hot sex scenes.  I would love it if she would consider a book for Emma’s best friend!!

Cocky Client (Steamy Coffee Collection # 3)

By Whitney G.

Synopsis

Today is officially the worst day of my life…

I woke up five hours late after a reckless one-night stand with the sexiest, cockiest, and most arrogant man I’ve ever met. (And this asshole actually left a note: “I think you were lying to me about being “experienced” last night. You orgasmed three times, and that was before we made it to your bedroom. I also find it hard to believe you “usually wear silk or lingerie.” Your drawers are all full of cotton granny panties–The best man you’ve ever fucked…)

My top two clients for my PR company left to my number one competitor, my roommate ‘accidentally’ bleached my favorite suit, and my favorite coffee shop was shut down for “health concerns.”

Still, none of those things dimmed my excitement for what was supposed to be the best four o’clock signing session of my career. I was on the verge of signing the highest paying client in my company’s history, taking on a so-called “impossible” job that no publicist had been able to handle.

But at four o’clock, there was no athlete, television personality, or celebrity. Instead, that sexy, arrogant one-night stand stepped into my office with a familiar smirk and introduced himself as my new, cocky client…

Review

COCKY CLIENT is the third novella in the Steamy Coffee Collection series and, as with the previous two novellas, it was a short and entertaining read.  That being said, COCKY CLIENT had a very similar storyline to NAUGHTY BOSS, in that both stories involve a CEO being ordered not to have sex and to clean up their image.  The only difference between the two lead females is that one is a PA while the other is a publicist.

There’s no great conflict to overcome at the end of this story, but there’s plenty of verbal sparring between Ryan and Penelope.  The thing I like most about this series is that the women are strong and determined, and I enjoyed watching Penelope stand up to Ryan every time he was being an unreasonable idiot.  COCKY CLIENT is told in dual POVs and comes with a nice ending for Ryan and Penelope.
